Kukicha Tea from Japan and Elementary Season Six's Through the Fog

Summary: The Elementary procedural drama episode Aug. 6, 2018, goes Through the Fog of unknowing about anthrax and tularemia and gives kukicha tea for Alzheimer's.

Situational and symptom analyses and kukicha tea alleviate respective clouds of unknowing about bioterrorist attacks and Alzheimer's disease, in the 134th Elementary procedural drama series episode Through the Fog Aug. 6, 2018.
Director Guy Ferland and writers Robert Doherty, Jeffrey Paul King and Kelly Wheeler bring aberrations and amnesia, and anthrax and tularemia, into Season 6's 14th episode. Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) considers biological or chemical and diversionary terrorist causes and their respective body-count and hidden-agenda consequences for the 11th Precinct Police Headquarters. He deduces deeds and doers from images at 6:58 p.m. July 2, 2018, on the cell phone that detonated fogs of unknowing from a dark bag.
Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) employs "Japanese tea made from stems and twigs. Sherlock swears by it" for her mother Mary Park's (Freda Foh Shen) foggy brain.

The names stalk and twig tea respectively fit as English literal equivalents of the Japanese words bōcha (棒茶) and kukicha (茎茶).
Stalks, stems and twigs, not fresh leaves and leaf buds, generate the English and Japanese names as tea plant parts that go into kukicha tea production. The four harvests of tea plant stalks, stems and twigs herald signature creamy, nutty, roasted, sweet chestnut flavors and fresh green, smoky aromas of kukicha tea. They involve fall-pruned, low-down, semi-wild, three-year-old shoots; thick twigs from 10th-midwinter trims; yearly March- and June-pruned brown, dried, mature leaves and small, thin stems and twigs.
Kukicha tea juggles softened, steamed twigs sun-dried one week; stored in brown paper sacks for two- to three-year aging; gas-fired cast-iron oven-roasting of same-graded, same-sized twigs.

Natural foodists know kukicha tea of Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Kyushu island, Japan, through macrobiotics founder Nyoichi Sakurazawa (Oct. 18, 1893-April 23, 1966), known as George Ohsawa.
Alkalinizing kukicha tea lodges calcium, copper, manganese, selenium, vitamins A, B1, B2, B3 and C and zinc fluoride; and little caffeine from autumnal and winter harvests. Alkalinizing qualities; amino acid, catechin, flavonoid and polyphenol antioxidants against cell-damaging free radical unstable atoms; minerals; and vitamins merge kukicha tea into grain-based, vegetarian macrobiotic diets. Chocolate-, grass-, wood-tasting kukicha tea, half-and-half with apple or lemon juices, nurtures green-yellow beverages from medium-sized three-year-old, thick-sized 10-year-old and thin-sized one-year-old twigs in 20:40:40 proportions.
Kukicha tea occurs as an export from and an invention of the southwestern archipelago even though tea plants observe original eastern, southeastern and southern continental homelands.

Tea plants (Camellia sinensis, "Chinese tea flower") proliferated in Japan, through the peregrinations of 7th- through 14th-century Buddhist monks, 3,300-plus years after cultivation in ancient China.
The indoor/outdoor, potted, subtropical/tropical herbal ornamental queues up through 8,202.1-foot (2,500-meter) altitudes above sea level in 50 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 30 degrees Celsius). Tea plant and kukicha tea production remains realizable in United States Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 7 through 9 sun-dappled conservatories, but not in Brooklyn brownstones. Seven researchers suggested in Psychopharmacology October 2014 that green teas, such as kukicha tea, strengthen parieto-frontal connections, synaptic (short-term) connectivity and "working memory processing" task performance.
Perhaps Joan indeed takes Mary "all the way over here [the Brooklyn brownstone] to talk about [alkalinizing, cholesterol-lowering, memory-enhancing kukicha] tea" and about home nursing options.
