A renter less affects an only Bakerhaven realtor anxious that a rental archives a crime scene in Presumed Puzzled, 17th Puzzle Lady mystery by author Parnell Hall (Oct. 31, 1934-Dec. 15, 2020).

Attorney Becky Baldwin bemoans bringing in just enough money to rent a one-room office above the pizza parlor and a top-floor apartment in Mrs. Taggatt’s house. Jennifer Carter Grant chews her food carelessly like toy poodle Buddy Felton and perhaps Aunt Cora Felton and unlike Becky, Aaron Grant and Sherry Carter Grant. Three-year-old Jennifer delights in finger-painting and in painting green-and-yellow backhoes or frogs at the private preschool where her mother, Sherry, once did substitute, then full-time teaching.

Front lawn-established monkey-bars encourage Jennifer to exercise outside weekday preschool, where Alice and Louise respectively epitomize long-term employees and the third successor in Sherry’s former position.

Aaron favors finishing his articles for the Bakerhaven Gazette by 5:00 p.m. even as he sometimes finds himself late for family dinners from following anonymous tips.

A disguised male voice gives a groundless tip about Bakerhaven High School students getting high in the mall parking lot in front of the Walmart store. Aaron heads home after two hours, from around 5:30 p.m. to around 7:30 p.m., during which time Paula Martindale and Ken Jessup head in and out. It is somewhere around the first-year anniversary of Paula inhabiting a black-shuttered, white-frame two-story with husband Roger and itinerating to weekly bridge games at Country Kitchen.

His death jeopardizes Roger, now a renter less for the only Bakerhaven realtor, journeying from his Glenwood Street rental around 7:30 a.m. and back by 7:00p.m..

Nobody knew Roger, who kept a rock-solid prenuptial agreement with Paula, apart best friend Ken Jessup and Feldspar Investments receptionist Pam and co-stockbrokers Brinkman and Dawson.

Roger lodged his tan Chrysler with a garage clerk until leaving work, during which he located sometimes to a 57th Street hotel room, by 5:00 p.m. His car, between the driver’s seat and the gearshift column, and his corpse respectively manifested cell phone and change, cigarettes, interoffice memo, padlet and ready-to-mail envelope. His American Express card noted latest charges for a hotel room on 57th Street, where Roger nestled one hour, perhaps two, six times in two months.

Perhaps operating as renter less through four-year-long and semi-retired hotel clerks Harold Brown and Bob Krantz than New York-connected, only Bakerhaven realtor never occurred to Roger.

Paula never presented herself pleasantly to her bridge partner, Cora, or to fellow bridge players First Selectman Iris Cooper and Knauer Realty owner-operator Judy Douglas Knauer.

Cora never quests trendy pantsuits for bridge games, courtroom proceedings under Judge Hobbs or visits with New York Police Department Sergeant Crowley and fabric-store owner-operator Stephanie. She never reveals her pantsuit-free wardrobe even as Aaron and Becky respectively regard the latter as Gap-dancer dressed and County Prosecutor Henry First as Gap-clothes dressed. Perhaps she steadfastly stays away from seeking seconds, smoking cigarettes and swallowing alcohol since she sees Becky sporting inexpensive clothes that nevertheless suggest a million-dollar silhouette.

Perhaps treating others distantly, unlike Cora tackling Sam Brogan, Dan Finley, perhaps all Bakerhavenites, turned Roger into a renter less for Presumed Puzzled’s only Bakerhaven realtor.

A dinner roast, like every dinner, functions as a friendly meal in front of the television set in the living room of Cora’s Bakerhaven-area, country-living prefab.

Sherry gives Aunt Cora, daughter Jennifer Carter Grant, husband Aaron Grant, herself and toy poodle Buddy veal-graced osso buco (from Italian osso, “bone” and buco, “hole”). Buddy and Jennifer have macaroni from a box, with butter and cheese, and everyone has asparagus, chicken, chicken curry and rice-like (per Cora) quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa). Grated store-bought Parmesan and melted shaved Reggiano cheeses respectively inspire ground beef-, guacamole-, lettuce-, tomato-inundated taco-shell and frozen microwaveable tortellini (from Italian tortellino, “cakelet, fritterlet) dinners.

A carving knife jumpstarts chicken, roast and veal dinners even as Ativan journeys down attorney Becky Baldwin’s throat with water, more judicious than Roger Martindale’s alcohol.

Unknown alcohol kindled a blood alcohol content of .09, above legal drunkenness at .08, and kept Roger from knowing how to keep away from his killer.

Luke Haslett, as Bakerhaven town drunk, liked little pints of cheap bourbon and left any location through which he lunged and lurched scent-loaded with stale whiskey. No alcohol makes Cora miss Bloody Mary or scotch even as New York Police Department (NYPD) Sergeant Crowley perhaps maintains a bourbon supply within hand’s reach. Chain smoking and latent alcoholism no longer nudge Cora into Becky’s non-smoking law office or, with the latter, to the Country Kitchen bar for numerous scotches.

Becky obtains optimal skinniness, slenderness, slimness, thinness and trimness by opting for a carving knife over a cake slicer and alcoholic drinks over anti-anxiety, tranquilizing Ativan.

The Country Kitchen bartender pours Becky, who prefers unspecified wine with her at-home dinners, scotch on the rocks and Cora Diet-only, rum-free virgin rum and Coke.

A cucumber-, radish-, red pepper- and romaine lettuce-tossed salad with homemade balsamic vinaigrette and some slices of leftover chicken perhaps qualify as a typical at-home dinner. Becky, minutes from downtown courtroom proceedings, relieves stress regarding a missing, then a murdered person by bottled scotch and shot glass in her desk’s bottom drawer. Adjournment, recess and testimony suggest scotch, sandwich and water to Becky, Judge Hobbs and Paula whereas Dairy Queen set-ups never suggest soft-serve ice cream to Cora.

Alcohol and Ativan traces, a carving knife, a cell phone and a life respectively tell when, how, why and who terminated Roger Martindale in Presumed Puzzled.

Bakerhaven maps advance or avoid a black-shuttered white-frame two-story on Glenwood Street with Presumed Puzzled, 17th mystery in the 20-book Puzzle Lady series authored by Parnell Hall (Oct. 31, 1944-Dec. 15, 2020).

The front driveway before the garage and its breezeway to the Felton prefab and to the Carter/Grant addition boasts a width big enough for two cars. Aaron Grant, second husband of Cora Felton’s niece, Sherry Carter Grant, and first-time parent of three-year-old Jennifer Carter Grant, conducts his car to the Bakerhaven Gazette. He drives his daughter to the private preschool where Sherry once delighted in teaching duties and from which the latter drives Jennifer home in the afternoon.

The Carter/Felton red Toyota enables Cora to effectuate legal encounters with attorney Becky Baldwin in the latter’s one-room law office above downtown Bakerhaven’s side-street pizza parlor.

The import-car driver flits to Country Kitchen for bridge with First Selectman Iris Cooper, realtor Judy Douglas Knauer and Paula Martindale; and unofficial meetings with Becky.

Cora perhaps never graces Mrs. Taggatt’s house, where roof eaves give Becky standing-up space only in the elongated, narrow, railroad flat-like, rented, top-floor apartment’s one-room center. She heads to Chief Dale Harper’s Bakerhaven Police Station office and to New York Police Department Sergeant Crowley’s Greenwich Village apartment with fabric store-owning/operating girlfriend Stephanie. Cora, after itinerating to the Martindale residence, investigates Feldspar Investments and a 57th Street hotel, which respectively included Roger Martindale among it stockbrokers and its check-ins.

Cora journeys to the old Dairy Queen before joining Dale at the Glenwood Street rental, its bloodied, white-carpeted living room jeopardizing Bakerhaven maps jubilating neighborhood-wide safety.

Roger kept his tan Chrysler in a garage perhaps near the hotel employing as substitute desk clerk Bob Krantz, East 71st Street one-room, rent-stabilized, walk-up resident.

Cora and Roger respectively left their cars in the Country Kitchen parking lot and in a New York City garage for 24-plus hours and two days. Bakerhaven, Danbury or somewhere else in Connecticut or New York City perhaps quarters Ken Jessup, who qualifies himself as more acquainted with Roger than with Paula. Downtown Bakerhaven’s Main Street courthouse perhaps realizes record-breaking attendance with Aaron and Ken reinforcing Luke and Paula revealing the latter’s mall errand before Roger returned home. The Bakerhaven courthouse and the Bakerhaven police station serve as striking sites for Rick Reed, newsman with the Channel 8 television station, to supply live updates.

Tourists tempted by atypical small-town terror perhaps traipse with Bakerhaven maps in tow to Glenwood Street, where 17 carving knife-inflicted stab wounds terminated drugged, tipsy Roger.
