Leonid Meteor Shower Alights ‘Imiloa November 2024 Sky Watch

Summary: Leonid Meteor Shower alights ‘Imiloa November 2024 Sky Watch and anticipates a shooting-star peak over Hilo, Hawaii, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 16-17, 2024.

"God talks to human beings through many vectors: through each other, through organized religion, through the great books of those religions, through wise people, through art and music and literature and poetry, but nowhere with such detail and grace and color and joy as through creation. When we destroy a species, when we destroy a special place, we're diminishing our capacity to sense the divine, understand who God is and what our own potential is." Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., April 19, 2023, Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts.

“And there’s many people out there who want us to move to the next planet already and I’m like, hang on, let’s not give up on this planet yet," William, Prince of Wales, July 31, 2023, Sorted Food food truck, London, England, United Kingdom.

Each annual Leonid meteor shower, from A.D. 902 onward, sometimes archives solid-particle shooting stars with streams arising from comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle of years 1167, 1466, 1699, 1733, 1767, 1899, 1932 or 1998; graphic of orbits of Earth and Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle, with Earth's position Nov. 17, a peak date for Tempel-Tuttle-induced Leonid meteor shower: WOtP, CC BY SA 3.0 Unported, via Wikimedia Commons

Leonid Meteor Shower alights ‘Imiloa November 2024 Sky Watch and anticipates a shooting-star peak of 10 each hour over Hilo, Hawaii County and island, Hawaii state, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 16-17, 2024.
Sunset-sky sky watches begin at 8:00 p.m. Hawaii-Aleutian (4:00 Chamorro, 7:00 Samoa, 10:00 Alaska, 11:00 Pacific, midnight Mountain, 1:00 next-day Central, 2:00 Eastern, 2:00 Atlantic) Time. Meteor showers such as Leonid meteor showers, also called Leonids (from Greek λέων -ο-ειδής, via Latin leō oīdēs, “lion of/pertaining/related”), commonly commence from midnight to dawn. Hilo at Hawaii “Big Island” and County domiciles ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center (from Hawaiian hilo, “thread”; ha wai ‘i, “breath life-force supreme”; ‘imi loa, “to search far”).
Time and Date AS (from Norwegian aksjeselskap, “[stock-]share company”) expects Hilo sun-setting, sun-rising at 5:40 p.m. Saturday the 16th, 6:30 a.m. Sunday the 17th Hawaii-Aleutian Time.

November 16 and 17 figure mixed cloudy, rainy, sunny skies with day and night temperatures of 79 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit (26.1111 and 20 degrees Celsius).
The full moon generates generous light even as overcast skies of a month with only Friday the 29th cloud- and rain-free sunny perhaps grieve solar-system nightlights. Leonid meteor shower 2024 hosts perhaps 10 shooting stars each hour during its peak even as the historical record hails 100,000 to 240,000-plus Nov. 12-13, 1833. That Friday and that Saturday iteration 191 years ago impressed those inhabiting all North America east of the Rocky Mountains with its illumination and its intensity.
‘Imiloa November 2024 Sky Watch jubilates less joyous journeys of solid-particle streaming Leonid meteor shower joining, at 43-44 miles (70-71 kilometers) per second, our Earthly orbit.

That 1833 event kindled our knowing, from Denison Olmsted’s (Jun 18, 1791-May 13, 1859) Observations on the Meteors of November 13th, 1833, the short-duration meteors’ radiant-point.
The American Journal of Science and Arts launched that article in January-April 1834 and Facts Representing the Meteoric Phenomena of November 13th, 1834 in January 1836. Massive manifestations in 1866-1868 matched shooting-star movements with the Olmsted mention of the constellation Leo as meeting point from which all particles migrated to our Earth. Wilhelm Tempel (Dec. 4, 1821-Mar 16, 1889) Dec. 19, 1865, and Horace Parnell Tuttle (Mar 17, 1837-Aug 16, 1923) Jan. 6, 1866 noted their parent body.
Thirty-three-year-occurring comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle occasions old 1167 through young 1998-streaming Leonid meteor shower apparently originating at right ascension 10h 17m and declination +21.6 degrees of constellation Leo.

Leonid meteor shower prettifies ‘Imiloa November 2024 Sky Watch and latitudes plus 90 degrees to minus 65 degrees, at 90 degrees north to 65 degrees south.
Each annual Leonid meteor shower from year 2021 through year 2030 quarters particles that queue from the 1733 quest of periodic, 33.83-year-orbited, 3.6-kilometer- (2.2-mile-) dimensioned Tempel-Tuttle. The 55P/Temple-Tuttel orbit, with a one-half axial diameter of 10.46 astronomical units, realizes a 19.96-astronomical-unit aphelion farthest from, and a 0.9655-astronomical-united perihelion nearest to, our Earth. Orbital eccentricity strays 0.9078 from perfect-circle shaping even as said comet shows an orbital inclination of 162.57 degrees and a 0.008-astronomical-units (1,200,000-kilometer) minimum orbit intersection distance.
Karen Meech, Olivier Hainaut and James Bauer University of Hawaii telescope-tracked March 4, 1997, 22.5-magnitude 55P/Tempel-Tuttle, whose Leonid meteor shower 'Imiloa November 2024 Sky Watch treats.

Wilhelm Tempel (Dec. 4, 1821-Mar 16, 1889) Dec. 19, 1865, and Horace Parnell Tuttle (Mar 17, 1837-Aug 16, 1923) Jan. 6, 1866 assured us of comet-arising Leonid meteor showers; drawing of Comet 55p/Tempel-Tuttle on discovery date, Dec. 19, 1865, by Tempel in his personal notebook in the Historical Archive of the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory (outskirts of Florence, Tuscany, west central Italy): Public Domain, via Wikimedia Commons
