Summary: ‘Imiloa November 2024 Sky Watch applauds Makalii and Makahiki arriving with the asterism arising at the Koolau area of sunset-articulated skies.
"God talks to human beings through many vectors: through each other, through organized religion, through the great books of those religions, through wise people, through art and music and literature and poetry, but nowhere with such detail and grace and color and joy as through creation. When we destroy a species, when we destroy a special place, we're diminishing our capacity to sense the divine, understand who God is and what our own potential is." Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., April 19, 2023, Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts.
“And there’s many people out there who want us to move to the next planet already and I’m like, hang on, let’s not give up on this planet yet," William, Prince of Wales, July 31, 2023, Sorted Food food truck, London, England, United Kingdom.
‘Imiloa November 2024 Sky Watch applauds Makalii and Makahiki arriving with the asterism arising at the Koolau (from Hawaiian maka, “stars”; li’i, “little”; hiki, “to come”; Ko’olau, “north”) area of sunset-articulated skies.
The Hawaiian asterism Makalii (from Hawaiian Makali’i) becomes the English Seven Sisters and the Anglo-Greek Pleiades (from Greek πλέω, “[season] to float, to sail” via Πλειάδες). The Pleiades asterism, as open star cluster in the constellation Taurus (from Latin taurus, “bull”), clusters seven sisters: Alcyone, Celaeno, Electra, Maia, Merope, Sterope and Taygete. It designates the seven daughters of the nymph Pleione and the Titan Atlas, therefore the maternal granddaughters of Titan water-body god and goddess Oceanus and Tethys.
Tethys’ daughter Pleione and son-in-law Atlas basally and Alcyone (from Greek τήθη, “grandmother”; Πληιόνη, Πλειόνη, “to increase in number”; ἀλκυών, “kingfisher”) post-like elucidate the seven-sisters cross.
Merope, Electra and Celaeno (from Greek μερος ωψ, “part face" via Μερόπη "face turned"; Ἠλέκτρα, “amber”; Κελαινώ, “the dark one”) form half of the seven-sisters crosspiece.
Maia, Taygeta and Sterope (from Greek μαῖα, “lady”; Ταϋγέτη; στεροπή, “lightning” via Στερόπη), grouped into an arching half-circle, generate the last half of the seven-sisters crosspiece. The little-eyed, seven-eyed, little-starred, seven-starred Makalii asterism hovers above the koolau (from Hawaiian Ko’olau, “north, windward”) horizon even as each November night, our Sun heads downward. Five-forty-five p.m. Hawaii-Aleutian Standard (1:45 Chamorro, 4:45 Samoa, 7:45 Alaska, 8:45 Pacific, 9:45 Mountain, 10:45 Central, 11:45 Eastern, 12:45 a.m. next-day Atlantic) Time initiates November sunsets.
‘Imiloa November 2024 Sky Watch jubilates its ‘Imiloa Nowemapa sky charts even as the Polynesian-ancestored Hawaiian archipelago anciently and traditionally judged month names district- and island-specific.
Friday, Nov. 1, 2024, kindles the ancient, four-month-long, traditional Hawaiian New Year known as Makahiki Harvest Festival of November and December 2024, January and February 2025.
Modern Hawaiian likens the month November to Nowemapa even as the Prince Kuhi’o Hawaiian Civic Club Calendar logs the name Welehu for late October, early November. Welehu marks the cooler, wetter Hooilo season (from Hawaiian welehu, “deep-sea fish”; Ho’oilo, “to germinate, sprout”) and merges with the next-month late November, early December Makalii. Kaelo and Kaulua respectively niche late December, early January and late January, early February even as late February niches elsewhere, outside the Makahiki Harvest Festival months.
‘Imiloa November 2024 Sky Watch observes the asterism Makalii and the Makahiki Harvest Festival to agriculture, fertility, music, peace, rain god Lono (from Hawaiian lono, “tidings”?).
Nana, for late February, early March, and Welo (from Hawaiian nana, “to watch”?; welo, “sunset”), for late March, early April, pertain as last two Hooilo-season months.
Seven-starred Makalii quests the sailing season’s peaceful, prosperous quintessence in such quarters as Welehu-quadranted akule (scad fish, Trachurops crumenophthalmus) and ‘opelu (mackerel scad, Decapterus macarellus) fishing. Makalii, Kaelo and Kaulua respectively rally akule, ‘ama’ama (mullet, Mugil cephalus) and ’opule; inshore and reef fishing; arrowroot, banana, gourd, kalo, olona, ‘uala, wauke, yam plantings. Next-to-last month Nana sees mullet fishing even as inshore and reef fishing stops and last month Welo suggests deep-sea, malolo (flying fish, Evolantia microptera) and mullet.
‘Imiloa November 2024 Sky Watch transmits the sunless-skied treks of seven-starred Makalii as the latter asterism tenders the first month in the annual Makahiki Harvest Festival.

'Imiloa November 2024 Sky Watch acclaims seven-eyed, seven-sistered, seven-starred Pleiades, acknowledged in Hawaiian culture as Makalii, abiding in darkened skies exactly at daily sunset. Four-month Makahiki festival begins with rising of star cluster Makali‘i (Pleiades or Seven Sisters) over Hawaiian horizon at sunset in late October or early November; Makahiki honors Lono, one of four main gods recognized throughout the Pacific and associated with agriculture, fertility, peace and rainfall; for the festival's tradition of hānaipū, or the feeding of Lono, priests represented Lono by carrying a long pole (akua loa) topped with a statue of Lono and with a cross-bar draped with white kapa (bark-cloth) and decorated with pala fern (Marattia douglasii; they made a clockwise circuit of the islands in 23 days as they visited ahupua'a (ancient Hawaiian land divisions); National Park Service (NPS) photo of "Akua Loa," 2019 watercolor by Phoenix, Arizona-based artist and desert wildlife biologist Alexandra "Allie" Giambalve: Public Domain, via Haleakalā National Park @ https://www.nps.gov/hale/learn/historyculture/makahiki.htm
