Le Nozze di Figaro by Classical Era composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756-Dec. 5, 1791) receives 12 performances in the 2021-2022 season. The season's winter cast sang in January's six performances: Saturday, Jan. 8, at 1:00 p.m.; Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 15, at 1:00 p.m.; Thursday, Jan. 20, at 7:00 p.m.; Sunday, Jan. 23, at 2:00 p.m.; and Friday, Jan. 28, at 7:00 p.m. The month's second Saturday matinee, Jan. 15, aired as the 2021-2022 season's sixth Saturday matinee opera broadcast.

The season's spring cast sings in April's six performance: Saturday, April 2, at 8:00 Eastern Daylight Time; Wednesday, April 6, at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 9, at 1:00 p.m.; Wednesday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, April 16, at 8:00 p.m.; and Thursday, April 21, at 7:00 p.m.

The April 9 Saturday matinee opera broadcast of Le Nozze di Figaro numbers as the second of two Saturday matinee opera broadcasts of Mozart's Figaro opera in the 2021-2022 season. The season's first Saturday matinee opera broadcast of Le Nozze di Figaro, performed by the winter cast, aired Jan. 15 as the 2021-2022 season's sixth Saturday matinee opera broadcast.

The 2021-2022 season's performances of Le Nozze di Figaro represent the fourth revival of the new production that debuted Monday, Sep. 22, 2014, under the directorship of Sir Richard Eyre. The English film, opera, television and theatre director had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, in the opera company's 946th performance of Carmen by French Romantic Era composer Georges Bizet (Oct. 25, 1838-June 3, 1875).

Yannick Nézet-Séguin originally was scheduled to conduct five of the opera's six January performances, including the Jan. 15 Saturday matinee opera broadcast, and five of the six April performances, including the April 9 Saturday matinee opera broadcast. Met Opera's third music director had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, alongside Sir Richard Eyre.

Maestro Nézet-Séguin shared the January conductorship with Gareth Morrell, who conducted the month's sixth performance, Friday, Jan. 28 performance. The British conductor had made his Metropolitan Opera debut Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, in the opera company's 516th performance of Lucia di Lammermoor by 19th-century Italian bel canto opera composer Gaetano Donizetti (Nov. 29, 1797-April 8, 1848).

Yannick Nézet-Séguin was scheduled to share the spring conductorship with Nimrod David Pfeffer, who conducts the fourth revival's closing performance, Thursday, April 21. The Israeli-born, New York City-based conductor and pianist's conductorship of the fourth revival's closing performance marks his Met Opera debut.

Update: Per The New York Times deputy culture editor for news Michael Cooper's Nov. 29, 2021, tweet at 6:06 p.m., Italian conductor Daniele Rustioni and American conductor James Gaffigan replace Maestro Nézet-Séguin for the opera's first five January and first five April performances, respectively. Daniele Rustioni had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, March 23, 2017, in the opera company's 1,156th performance of Aida by 19th century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901). James Gaffigan had made his Metropolitan Opera debut Tuesday, Sep. 25, 2018, in the opera company’s 1,321st performance of La Bohème by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924).

Christian Van Horn sings April's title role. The American bass-baritone had made his Met Opera debut Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, as Pistola in the opera house’s 176th performance of Verdi's Falstaff.

Le Nozze di Figaro numbers as the first of two Saturday matinee opera broadcasts in the 2021-2022 season for Christian Van Horn. He sings Nick Shadow in the June 6 Saturday matinee opera broadcast of The Rake's Progress by Russian-born composer, conductor and pianist Igor Stravinsky (June 17, 1882-April 6, 1971).

Aida Garifullina originally was scheduled to sing April's Susanna, whose wedding to Figaro finally happens. The Tartarian Russian operatic soprano had made her Met Opera debut Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, as Zerlina in the opera house's 565th performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni.

Update: Per OperaWire's announcement via Twitter Monday, March 21, 2022, at 10:40 p.m., Ying Fang replaces Aida Garifullina as spring's Susanna. The Chinese operatic soprano had made her Metropolitan Opera debut Sunday, Sep. 28, 2013, as the Kazan Cathedral’s female voice and as Madame Podtochina’s daughter in the opera company’s seventh performance of The Nose by Russian composer and pianist Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich (Sept. 25, 1906-Aug. 9, 1975).

Federica Lombardi sings April's Countess Almaviva, who successfully strategizes the occurrence of her maid Susanna's wedding. The Italian operatic soprano had made her Met Opera debut Jan. 30, 2019, as Donna Elvira, alongside Aida Garifullina's Zerlina.

Gerald Finley sings April's Count Almaviva, whose failed extra-marital pursuits yield appreciation of his wife. The Canadian operatic baritone had made his Met Opera debut Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, as Papageno in the opera company’s 317th performance of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.

Sasha Cooke sings April's trouser role of Cherubino, Count Almaviva's cooperative page. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, as the Second Priestess in the opera house's sixth performance of Iphigénie en Tauride by German classical composer Christoph von Gluck (July 2, 1714-Nov. 15, 1787).

Elizabeth Bishop appears in all of January's and April's performances as Marcellina, who discovers that Figaro is her son. In the fourth revival, she makes her first reprisal of the role that she added to her Met Opera portfolio in the 2019-2020 season's third revival. The American mezzo-soprano had made her Met Opera debut Monday, Feb. 7, 1994, as the Venetian in the opera company’s 10th performance of Death in Venice by English composer, conductor and pianist by Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten (Nov. 22, 1913-Dec. 4, 1976).

Maurizio Muraro appears in all winter and spring performances as scheming Dr. Bartolo. The Italian operatic bass-baritone reprises the role in which he had made his Met Opera debut Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, in the opera company’s 419th performance of the opera.

Giuseppe Filianoti appears in all winter and spring performances as the Music Teacher, Don Basilio, who upsets Count Almaviva with the announcement that the Count's page, Cherubino, is in love with the Count's wife. The Italian lyric tenor had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, as Edgardo in the opera company's 549th performance of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor.

The fourth revival's first performance, Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022, numbered as Met Opera's 509th performance of Le Nozze di Figaro. The Metropolitan Opera premiere of Mozart's Figaro opera occurred Wednesday, Jan. 31, 1894. Le Nozze di Figaro received seven performances in the 1893-1894 season.
