Summary: Hawaiian acorn worms accept nature, not Nurture like in season 1 episode 19 Monday, April 18, 2022, on police procedural television series NCIS: Hawai’i.
Hawaiian acorn worms abide in burrows, seaweed and shells. They abound, albeit solitarily, not in colonies, in shallow water and on sea floors. Their abode accommodates them alone. They achieve such activities as excreting and feeding from a proboscis-sized burrow, seaweed or shelter hole; Tuesday, July 15, 2016, 02:30:11+00:00 image of Enteropneust "acorn" worm at 5539 meters depth, photo credit NOAA Okeanos Explorer Program, 2016 Deepwater Exploration of the Marianas, Leg 3 (Image ID: expn7526, Voyage To Inner Space -- Exploring the Seas With NOAA Collection): NOAA Photo Library, CC BY 2.0 Generic, via Flickr |
Hawaiian acorn worms accept nature, not Nurture like in season 1 episode 19 debuted April 18, 2022, and rerun Nov. 7, and March 25, 2023, on police procedural television series NCIS: Hawai’i.
Episode 19 overall, by director Lin Oeding and writer Jan Nash, balances human nurture and Mother Nature when terrain, water and weather break an animal-importing boat. Caged animals and cluttered cargo cluster quite clumsily in the shallow waters and on the sea floor off Honolulu County on Oahu island in Hawaii state. They perhaps disturb Hawaiian acorn worms whose domiciles demand coastal marine habitats that demand intertidal or shallow ocean waters more than deeper waters further from shorelines.
Hemichordata (from Greek ἥμῐσυς χορδή, “half guts, tripe” via Latin chorda, “cord, string”) phylum membership entails elastic, longitudinal-axised rod; gill-slits; and hollow, longitudinal dorsal nerve cord.
Enteropneusta (from Greek ἔντερον πνευστος, “intestine [having] breath”) class membership fashions three-part body furnishings that feature first the protosome (from Greek πρό- στόμᾰ, "[lobe] before mouth").
Gut-breathing hemichordates each guard, after the mouth generated below the proboscis (from Greek προβοσκίς, “[food-taking] elephant[-like] trunk”), the mesosome (collar, from Greek μέσος σῶμα, “middle body”). They have, third after the collar second to the mouth first after the proboscis, the metasome (trunk, from Greek μετα- σῶμα, “beyond [behind, rear to] body”). Ptychoderidae (from Greek πτυχή δέρη εἶδος, “fold collar, neck, throat resemblance” via Latin -idæ, “-like”) family membership involve five species whose head shapes inspire acorn-like looks.
Hawaiian acorn worms journey through Mother Nature solitarily jubilated, unlike human-jumpstarted Nurture on NCIS: Hawai’i, in burrows, seaweed and shells or between rocks and root tangles.
Hawaiian acorn worms acquit themselves least safely during the egg stage, then during egg-hatching, then during the larval stage. They act as free-floating fertilized egg masses during the first stage and as free, unconfined swimmers during the second stage. Physical and sexual adulthood activates safer, more sustainable stages because of 24-7 confinement within burrows, seaweed or shells; Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, 17:53:25 image of "Planktonic larva of an unidentified hemichordate": Bruno C. Ptychodera flava (from Greek πτυχή δέρη, “fold collar, neck, throat”; Latin flāva, “blond, flaxen, golden, yellow”) genus and species membership kindles brown-yellow, long-trunked, short-collared, short-lobed bodies.
The pharyngeal-chordated roundworms labeled taxonomically by Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz (Nov. 12, 1793-May 19, 1831) locate their spawning times according to sea-water temperatures during wintry dusk. Physically and sexually mature female Hawaiian acorn worms during winter months, late November through early December, move 0.00433- to 0.00472-inch (110- to 120-µmillimeter) diameter eggs waterward. Physically and sexually mature male Hawaiian acorn worms need to nudge their sperm into those waters 6 p.m. Hawaii time (4 a.m. following day, Greenwich time).
Hawaiian acorn worms offer opportune occasions for anthropogenic (from Greek ἄνθρωπος γενής, “human offspring”) and predatory opportunities, like in Nurture on NCIS: Hawai’i, during pre-adult stages.
Waste-product elimination adds to the earthworm-like, initial appearance of adult Hawaiian acorn worms. Hawaiian acorn worm adults adjust their increasing length into coiled, ring-like mounds of body, mud, sand and wastes; Saturday, April 23, 2016, 00:34:59 image of an enteropneust worm, photo credit NOAA Okeanos Explorer Program, 2016 Deepwater Exploration of the Marianas, Leg 3 (Image ID: expn6754, Voyage To Inner Space -- Exploring the Seas With NOAA Collection): NOAA Photo Library, CC BY 2.0 Generic, via Flickr |
Hawaiian acorn worms prefer sea floor-, shallow water-suspended nutrient, organic-food particles of the Pacific Ocean from Galápagos westward to the Indian Ocean near Maldives and Mauritius.
Hawaiian acorn worm eggs qualify two days later as hatched larvae (from Latin lārvae, “ghost”) whose bell-bottomed, free-swimming, keyhole-shaped quintessence queues predatory auger and cone shells. Physical and sexual maturity renders sedentarily low-profile high-profile tornaria (from Latin tornare, “to turn”) larvae, with high-visibility signature spheres above their broadened bottoms and two-eyespotted uppersides. Boneless, brainless, eyeless, gelatinous, soft-bodied Hawaiian acorn worms sequester in sea-floor mud and sand where 24-7 shelters show them surreptitiously sampling food and sending out excrement.
Anthropogenic things, such as shipwrecked vessels off Oahu island in Nurture on NCIS: Hawai’i, threaten Hawaiian acorn worms, tucked away in burrows, more than Mother Nature.

Acorn worms acknowledge two developmental strategies. Hawaiian acorn worms acquiesce to indirect development of hatched egg to free-swimming larva to confined adult worm. Other acorn worms, such as Saccoglossus kowalevskii, acquire the adult worm stage without the larval stage between it and egg and egg-hatching stages; "A general overview of embryonic cleavage in hemichordate development of indirect and direct developing marine worms Saccoglossus kowalevskii and Ptychodera flava": Palomitaviajera, Public Domain, via Wikimedia Commons @ https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hemichordate_development.jpg
