Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro is the Met's Jan. 15, 2022, Saturday matinee broadcast, scheduled as the sixth Saturday matinee opera broadcast in the 2021-2022 season.
Le Nozze di Figaro by Classical Era composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756-Dec. 5, 1791) receives 12 performances in the 2021-2022 season and features two casts. The season's winter cast sings in January's six performances. The first performance took place Saturday, Jan. 8, at 1:00 p.m. The second through sixth, closing performances are scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 15, at 1:00 p.m.; Thursday, Jan. 20, at 7:00 p.m.; Sunday, Jan. 23, at 2:00 p.m.; and Friday, Jan. 28, at 7:00 p.m. The month's second Saturday matinee, Jan. 15, airs as the 2021-2022 season's sixth Saturday matinee opera broadcast.
The season's spring cast sings in April's six performances. Spring performances are scheduled for Saturday, April 2, at 8:00 Eastern Daylight Time; Wednesday, April 6, at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 9, at 1:00 p.m.; Wednesday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, April 16, at 8:00 p.m.; and Thursday, April 21, at 7:00 p.m.
The 2021-2022 season's staging of Le Nozze di Figaro marks the fourth revival of the new production that Sir Richard Eyre debuted Monday, Sep. 22, 2014. The English film, opera, television and theatre director had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, in the opera house's 946th performance of Carmen by French Romantic Era composer Georges Bizet (Oct. 25, 1838-June 3, 1875).
The production's sets and costume designer is Rob Howell. The British designer had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, alongside Sir Richard Eyre.
The production's lighting designer is Paule Constable. The British lighting designer had made her Met Opera debut Friday, April 11, 2008, in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of Satyagraha by American composer Philip Glass (born Jan. 31, 1937).
The production's choreographer is Sara Erde. The American choreographer had made her Met Opera debut Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, in the opera house's 74th performance of Werther by French Romantic Era composer Jules Massenet (May 12, 1842-Aug. 13, 1912).
Sir Richard's production received its first revival in the 2015-2016 season. After a season's skip, the second revival took place in the 2017-2018 season. After another season's skip, the third revival was held in the 2019-2020 season.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts five of the opera's January performances, including the Jan. 15 Saturday matinee opera broadcast, and five of the April performances, including the April 9 Saturday matinee opera broadcast. Met Opera's Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, alongside Sir Richard Eyre.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin shares the winter conductorship with Gareth Morrell, who conducted the Thursday, Jan. 20, performance. The British conductor had made his Met Opera debut Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, in the opera company's 516th performance of Lucia di Lammermoor by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti (Nov. 29, 1797-April 8, 1848).
Ryan McKinny sings January's title role. The American lyric bass-baritone had made his Met Opera debut Friday, May 4, 2012, as Mr. Ratcliffe in the opera house's 45th performance of Billy Budd by English composer, conductor and pianist by Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten (Nov. 22, 1913-Dec. 4, 1976).
Lucy Crowe sings January's Susanna, whose wedding to Figaro finally takes place. The English lyric soprano had made her Met Opera debut Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, as Servilia in the opera company's 40th performance of Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito.
Golda Schultz sings January's Countess Almaviva, who helps remove obstacles to her maid Susanna's wedding. The South African soprano had made her Met Opera debut Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017, as Pamina in the opera house’s 433rd performance of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte.
Le Nozze di Figaro numbers as the first of two Saturday matinee opera broadcasts in the 2021-2022 season for Golda Schultz. She also sings Anne Trulove in the June 11, 2022, Saturday matinee opera broadcast of The Rake's Progress by Russian-born composer, conductor and pianist Igor Stravinsky (June 17, 1882-April 6, 1971).
Christian Gerhaher sings January's Count Almaviva, who learns to appreciate his wife. The German baritone's appearance in the fourth revival's first performance, Saturday, Jan. 8, marked his Met Opera debut.
Anna Stéphany sings January's trouser role of Cherubino, Count Almaviva's page, who is in love with Countess Almaviva. The Anglo-French mezzo-soprano's appearance in the fourth revival's first performance, Saturday, Jan. 8, marked her Met Opera debut.
Elizabeth Bishop appears in all of January's and April's performances in her first reprisal of Marcellina, who learns that Figaro is her son. She had added Marcellina to her Met Opera portfolio in the 2019-2020 season's third revival. The American mezzo-soprano had made her Met Opera debut Monday, Feb. 7, 1994, as the Venetian in the opera house’s 10th performance of Britten's Death in Venice.
Maurizio Muraro appears in all of January's and April's performances as meddlesome Dr. Bartolo. The Italian operatic bass-baritone reprises the role in which he had made his Met Opera debut Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, in the opera company’s 419th performance of Le Nozze di Figaro.
Giuseppe Filianoti appears in all of January's and April's performances as the Music Teacher, Don Basilio, who distresses Count Almaviva with the revelation that Cherubino, the Count's page, is in love with the Count's wife. The Italian lyric tenor had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, as Edgardo in the opera house's 549th performance of Lucia di Lammermoor by 19th-century Italian bel canto opera composer Gaetano Donizetti (Nov. 29, 1797-April 8, 1848).
The 2021-2022 season's first performance, Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022, numbered as Met Opera's 509th performance of Le Nozze di Figaro. The Metropolitan Opera premiere of Mozart's Figaro opera took place Wednesday, Jan. 31, 1894. Le Nozze di Figaro received seven performances in the 1893-1894 season.
The takeaways for Le Nozze di Figaro as the Met's Jan. 15, 2022, Saturday matinee broadcast are that Mozart's Figaro opera schedules as the sixth Saturday matinee opera broadcast in the 2021-2022 season; that the opera's 12 performances are distributed equally, at six each, between January and April casts; that third Met Opera Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin's conductorship of five each in January and April includes both month's Saturday matinee opera broadcast; that the season's performances of Le Nozze di Figaro mark the fourth revival of the 2014-2015 season's new production by Sir Richard Eyre; and that Le Nozze di Figaro's April Saturday matinee broadcast numbers as the first of two Saturday matinee opera broadcasts in the 2021-2022 season for Golda Schultz.

The 2021-2022 season's two casts of Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro each receive Saturday matinee opera broadcasts (Jan. 15, April 9), under the conductorship of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who thereby adds his first Mozart opera to his Met Opera portfolio; with three operas (Don Carlo, La Traviata, Otello), Verdi dominantes the maestro's Met Opera portfolio of 17 operas (2009-2010 through 2021-2022): MET Orchestra Musicians @METOrchestra, via Facebook Dec. 5, 2018
