Dark sedans of unknown models announce ulterior agendas by their renters for Lights! Camera! Puzzles! as 20th mystery in the 20-book Puzzle Lady series by Parnell Hall (Oct. 31, 1934-Dec. 15, 2020).

A cream-colored Lexus with New York license plate BFH 561 belongs to Melvin Crabtree, puzzle lady Cora Felton’s latest ex-husband, who behaves badly in dark rentals. Dennis Pride, Cora’s ex-nephew-in-law, conducts himself crasser in a dark sedan rental than in his blue Chevy Impala, Cora’s Public School 84 classmate Freddy Fosterfield’s car. Insurance agent Hank Wells and wife Brittany each drive a blue Chevy Impala, as does Police Chief Dale Harper if Bakerhaven designates it for police cruisers.

Perhaps diner ex-employee Ricky Gleason, Emma Prentice Hurley heir Philip Hurley and private investigator Lester Mathews elected Impala models for respectively blue, rented, tan Chevy cars.

Private investigator Lester Mathews, like Walter Krebbs figuring FYI 3205 on his year-2000 model, fits his black-gray three- to four-year-old sedan with New York license plates.

Crossword-puzzle constructor Benny Southstreet’s unspecified rental and the black sedan of Valerie Thompkins Fleckstein, whose toy poodle Cora guards, respectively get New York and Connecticut plates. Raymond Harstein III, Cora’s fiancé and hotel owner from San Diego, California, has a rental car, perhaps a dark sedan, at his housing development-like, rental habitation. Attorney Becky Baldwin itinerates about her hometown in a compact rental until, like Bakerhaven Gazette reporter and ex-boyfriend Aaron Grant, she invests in a Honda Accord.

The ulterior agenda of such renters of dark sedans as Dennis and Melvin jeopardize how joltingly, how judiciously Cora and Sherry journey toward Lights! Camera! Puzzles!

Pickup-truck drivers such as Peggy Dawson and Marty Haskel in their battered models and Chester Hurley in his Ford model kindle sometimes kind, sometimes killing agendas.

Phyllis Hurley and husband Morty Applegate, unlike others owning family-friendly cars, lash out against other Emma Prentice Hurley heirs from inside and outside their Ford Fairlane. First Selectman Iris Cooper moves around in a station wagon, perhaps like the Ford model of Billy and Sara Pickens, who also maintain a Nissan Sentra. Old Mill Inn operator Mike Johnson’s daughter Vicki, as New York attorney Stuart Tanner’s wife, nestles into a blue Nissan, perhaps like puzzle-constructing, puzzle-solving Harvey Beerbaum’s.

Ulterior agendas less obnoxious than from dark sedans occupy such operators of motorcycles, albeit perhaps a Harley-Davidson, as Daniel Hurley, Dennis’ and Sherry’s Dartmouth College acquaintance.

Mercedes possessors such as attorneys Lennie Fleckstein and Arthur Kincaid perform pugnaciously, unlike public-spirited Mercedes-plying businessman Horace Taggart and dark Mercury sedan-plying bank president Marcus Gelman.

Such respective questers of Volkswagen microbuses and puce Superbeetles as Raymond’s next-door neighbors, Jack and Daffodil Dirkson, and Broadway stage director Rupert Winston qualify as questionable. John Grant, who runs his own insurance company, and wife Debbie, as Aaron’s parents, ride in the blue Subaru that they otherwise relegate to driveway parking. Blue scores high color-wise, as in New York stockbroker Zelda Zisk’s blue Fiat even as red-tied Medical Examiner Dr. Barney Nathan perhaps selects a red Volvo.

Dark sedans and, if tended by Cora, Toyota Camry models or Toyota models red as Barney’s bowtie transmit and trigger ulterior agendas in Lights! Camera! Puzzles!
