Three bodies of New Yorkers, not of Bakerhavenites, alarm Bakerhaven in $10,000 in Small, Unmarked Puzzles, 13th mystery in the Puzzle Lady series authored by Parnell Hall (Oct. 31, 1934-Dec. 15, 2020).
Number puzzle lady Cora Felton bends over the 20-, 20-plus-year-old Dumpster, which brandishes a dead 35- to 40- or 40-plus-year-old, in the boarded-up Chevron service station. The blue-eyed, brown-haired corpse, whose temple conserves a bleeding bullet wound, in a gray suit over a white shirt with a blue tie carries no identification. Officers Sam Brogan and Dan Finley as respective crime-scene demarcator and photographer, Chief Dale Harper and medical examiner Dr. Barney Nathan do not recognize the corpse.
Cora and someone else respectively encounter a blonde 30-year-old in Bakerhaven Cemetery and a 45-year-old in a black Chevy license-plated New York, both expired from gunshots.
Cora finds the first two bodies respectively before she fashions an alternate fit for the first $10,000 and after she fits the second $10,000 as foreordained.
The third body generates no third $10,000 from attorney Becky Baldwin and Melvin Crabtree, Cora’s grabbiest and grossest ex-husband, to guard the blackmailee from the blackmailer. Melvin harbors the gambling and skirt-chasing habits that head loan sharks such as Bill French and Tony di Marco from Las Vegas to Manhattan and Bakerhaven. Beautiful, blonde, results-oriented, smart, thin Becky interests Melvin even as blonde, 30-year-old Jane Cunningham interested him and, perhaps 20 years ago, Tropicana dancer Gina intrigued him.
Three bodies in, not from Bakerhaven, Connecticut, perhaps, perhaps not join in death other bodies, of born and bred Bakerhavenites in $10,000 in Small, Unmarked Puzzles.
Cora knows how to keep up with the unknown blackmailee and the unknown blackmailer by the crossword and the number, sudoku puzzles that blackmail kinetics kindle.
Her niece, Sherry Carter Grant, locating to Bakerhaven Hospital for a first-time, five-week premature childbirth, leads Cora to look to Harvey Beerbaum to level puzzle-solving loads. The mounting pressure makes Cora mull going postal, that is, murdering everyone in the way, which mortifies Miss Blakely, Bakerhaven postmistress, whose post office never missteps. Cora nudges Becky into negotiating a defense-friendlier hearing by nabbing County Prosecutor Henry Firth, nastily nicknamed Ratface, just before his wife nestles them into dinner niches.
One body, two bodies, three bodies occasion arraignment and probable-cause hearings and jury trials over one murder suspect, one weapon in $10,000 in Small, Unmarked Puzzles.
Town perceptions pass from Dale’s wife Ellen, to Jimmy Potter’s librarian mother Edith, to realtor Judy Douglas Knauer, through Mary Cushman’s Bake Shop, to Mrs. Hobbs.
Bakerhaven Courthouse, around which Bakerhaven Television Channel 8 newsman Rick Reed and spectators and in which court proceedings-admitted persons queue, quarters all proceedings under Judge Hobbs. Melvin retains for personal bodyguard responsibilities Clyde Curtis, who as Curtis Investigative Agency (CIA) owner-operator relays David McDermott from Manhattan-based CIA offices to the Carter/Felton/Grant residence. Dale, stressed over daughter Clara’s college expenses, suspects Cora, stressed over Sherry’s breech birth-prompted Caesarian section, for invoking the Fifth Amendment and of grand theft auto.
Cora tackles three bodies in Bakerhaven, teases Melvin about hatcheck girls and blackjack dealers and tells nephew-in-law Aaron publishable truths in $10,000 in Small, Unmarked Puzzles.
