Elderberry wine activates appalling actions in Arsenic and Old Puzzles, when assembled with one part strychnine, two parts arsenic, one pinch cyanide and where author Parnell Hall acknowledges Arsenic and Old Lace.

Bakerhaven businesses, but for sisters Charlotte and Edith Guilford’s north-side bed-and-breakfast, boast best drinks and eats, apart perhaps Shop and Stop processed, not real, maple syrup. Five cadavers, whose conscious counterparts consumed comestibles created at 51 Elmwood Circle, one-half mile (8.05 kilometers) north of town confines, challenge commerce catering to cherished customers. Cora Felton, niece Sherry Carter and nephew-in-law Aaron Grant drink coffee respectively diluted with disproportional milk and sugar, downed black and dumbfounded by disproportionately sugary milk.

Sherry, when exasperated or exhausted, elects unspecified tea even as everybody else in her entourage and perhaps in Brookhaven enterprises enjoy their cups of morning coffee.

Dale Harper favors coffeemaker coffee and toaster toast whenever family breakfasts fit into his township functions as police chief following Chief Ed Hodges retiring in 1997/1998.

Chief Harper otherwise goes to Cushman’s Bake Shop, where morning menus galvanize regular customers with on-site coffee and Silver Moon Bakery pastries from Manhattan, New York. The second homicide harboring hints of bitter almonds from cyanide poisoning heads Chief Harper, before 10 a.m., to his second blueberry muffin and huge black coffee. Three infractions, against a male tourist and two adulterers, and two infractions, against Bakerhaven inhabitants, perhaps inspire Chief Harper ingesting Cushman coffee with a California bun.

The poisons arsenic, cyanide and strychnine jeopardizing elderberry wine and unspecified tea joins, plot-wise if not perpetrator-wise, Arsenic and Old Puzzles to Arsenic and Old Lace.

Knowing liquid diets once of gin or vodka mixed or straight-up and still of energy-kindling coffees perhaps keeps Cora away from afternoon tea and elderberry wine.

Cora, lawfully loving, then leaving five husbands, likes caffè latte (from Arabic قَهْوَة‎ [qahwa] via Italian caffè, “coffee” and Latin lac via Italian latte, “milk”). She matches a Manhattan-made apricot scone with a Cushman-made latte of homogenized milk and unspecified espresso (from Latin exprimere via Italian esprimere, “to press out”) coffee. She nourishes herself on an apricot scone and a skim latte when she needs a Cushman breakfast, brunch, lunch or snack with her attorney, Rebecca Baldwin.

Becky Baldwin perhaps occasionally opts for afternoon tea, perhaps never ordered elderberry wine even before observing criminal offenses organized against outsider occupants of the Guilford bed-and-breakfast.

Three persons perhaps partook of bacon strips, buttered toast, scrambled eggs and unspecified pancakes with presumably hot coffee presented by Alan and Sebastian Guilford’s two aunts.

Alan’s girlfriend Arlene Winnington’s cabinets, cupboards and refrigerator respectively quarter canned soups and packaged cookies and crackers; maple syrup; and cold cuts, eggs, mayonnaise and milk. Alan resides with Arlene but retains rooms in the Guilford residence, where he reserves what Cora regards as elderberry wine, what he reveals as decantered sherry. Saving tomatoes by poisoning woodchucks, sickening Alan with butterscotch pudding and spooning egg at Cora suggest Edith and Sebastian as suspects and Jennifer Grant as spoiled.

Arsenic and Old Lace’s elderberry wine for isolated tourists suspectedly arsenic-tainted by spinster aunts to bachelor nephews triggers Arsenic and Old Puzzles, plot-wise if not perpetrator-wise.
