The article Is the Radial Growth of Irrigated Urban Trees More Strongly Correlated to Light and Temperature than Water? broaches artificial-surfaced, day-warmed, sensible heat-releasing, water-altered urbanization. Urban trees, whose growth 1.37-meter- (4.49-foot-) high trunk diameters at breast height (DBH) traditionally calculate, combat atmosphere-, soil-, and water-contaminating pollutants and urban ecosystem-changing invasive species. That they demand expensive, infrequent, repeated observations describes all tree growth-determining approaches, whether aerial LiDAR, aerial photographs, DBH, drones, satellites, street tree surveys or tree cores.

Continuous, growth-elucidating, real-time elaboration of bark expansions, cell emergences, nutrient and water embarkations ensues from dendrometers eased into the thinnest bark’s non-living xylem for Internet-enabled emissions.

The first day featuring the last-figured year’s maximum stem radius furnished the first day of the current year’s growing season for two white spruces (Picea glauca).

A zero-growth model gathering irreversible radial growth periods within growing seasons and gleaning current maximum growth over last-generated maximum growth gauged tree growth despite daily fluctuations. Spruces and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) handled low May, high July, mean air temperatures of 4.8 (40.64), 32 (89.6) and 19.37 degrees Celsius (66.86 degrees Fahrenheit). They incurred low, high August and mean soil temperatures of 8.7 (47.66), 24.4 (75.92) and 18.3 degrees Celsius (64.94 degrees Fahrenheit) and 1,012-millimeter (39.84-inch) total precipitation.

Average growth of 11 percent jumped the Japanese cedar, as one of three irrigated urban trees, from a 16.7-centimeter (6.58-inch) diameter to a 17.34-centimeter (6.83-inch) diameter.

The same growth average kindled the 11.5-centimeter (4.53-inch) diameter spruce 1’s 13.4-centimeter (5.28-inch) and the 14-centimeter (5.51-inch) diameter spruce 2’s 15.9-centimeter (6.26-inch) diameters 1.5 years later.

Southampton-lodged cedar and spruces respectively logged rapid diameter growth around April 26 to around Nov. 3, 2019, and around April 14 to around Sep. 7, 2019. Multiple regression models manifested air temperature, atmospheric VPD (vapor pressure deficit), soil moisture and all interaction terms as mobilizing growth rates for the three monitored trees. Higher-growth cedar, spruce 1 and spruce 2 necessitate VPD at 0.31 kPa, low-light soil temperatures below 17.5 degrees Celsius (63.5 degrees Fahrenheit) and 0.108-plus-millimeter (0.004-inch) precipitation.

Point dendrometers on the three irrigated urban trees offered growth observed through stem expansion and occurring oftenest at night and through energy gain and water use.

Stem contraction in one cedar and two spruce trunk diameters prevailed during above-freezing, daytime temperatures when transpiration pulled out water faster than roots pumped it in.

Air and soil moisture and air temperature water-use factors quickened spruce growth magnitude even as 2018-2019 linear models queued 10-plus percent in significantly variable growth rates. Japanese cedar, revealing carbon-invested, drought-resistant xylem and drought-sensitive rings of drought-tolerant Cupressaceae (cypress) family members, realized water use-related magnitudes but 81 percent in unaccountably variable rates. Thirteen-hour 45-minute-long versus 13-hour 20-minute-long days and thermal-accumlative 69.7 (157.46) versus 160.6 degrees Celsius (321.08 degrees Fahrenheit) respectively started cedar versus spruce radial expansion and growth.

Point dendrometers on temperate irrigated urban trees tracked energy gain and water use triggering radial growth, before deciduous leaf growth, before evergreen leaf and stem elongation.
