New Yorkers anxious about alimony checks and previous spouses access Bakerhaven and account for The KenKen Killings, 12th mystery in the Puzzle Lady series by Parnell Hall (Oct. 31, 1934-Dec. 15, 2020).
A registered letter brings number puzzle lady Cora Felton and Sherry Carter Grant, the former’s housemate and niece, from the Carter/Felton/Grant residence to Bakerhaven Post Office. Lennie Fleckstein conducts his gas-guzzling, old Mercedes from his driveway, where he nearly collides with a Prius, somewhere in New York to the Walgreens parking lot. His Fleckstein and Stone law firm defends the Chester T. Markowitz estate from atop Walgreens in Great Neck village, North Hempstead town, Nassau County, New York.
A trial examining alimony amounts allocated by Melvin Crabtree to Cora entails Lennie, as annulment and divorce lawyer, Melvin and Melvin’s girlfriend Bambi enjoying Bakerhaven cuisine.
Four Seasons Motel, Oakwood Motel and Pine Ridge Motel furnish temporary lodgings to Connecticut travelers and to such town visitors as trial lawyers and their plaintiffs.
Lennie perhaps goes back to wife Emma every evening even as Bambi and Melvin get room 105 in Oakwood Motel, where Evelyn Crabtree guards a room. Evelyn, Lennie and, without Bambi, Melvin respectively head to Mary Cushman’s Bake Shop; Country Kitchen bar and restaurant; and Country Kitchen and Ye Olde Antique Shop. Starbucks in Bakerhaven mall, which includes Bed Bath and Beyond and Stop & Shop, 1 mile (1.61 kilometers) from town outskirts, interests Cora and her attorney.
Becky Baldwin journeys to Country Kitchen and Starbucks sometimes, Cushman’s perhaps no more, the pizza parlor below her law office perhaps never in The KenKen Killings.
Cora, five pounds thinner keeping away from Country Kitchen apart Thursday bridge nights, Cushman’s and Starbucks except with Becky, knuckles under to Bakerhaven Candy Store chocolates.
Bakerhaven Candy Store near Bakerhaven Post Office perhaps lacks the long lines that liven Cushman’s near Bakerhaven Courthouse, Bakerhaven Drugstore, Bakerhaven Library and Bakerhaven Police Station. Town maps manifest Bakerhaven Library and Bakerhaven Drugstore at 11 and 18 Main Street, monikered North Street northward to the Prichert house, at 106, and beyond. The black-trimmed, hilltop Roger Randolph house, the green-trimmed Paul and Sally Hunter house with matching garage and the hilltop Prichert house nestle into two-story, white-frame niches.
Mr. and Mrs. Prichert in The KenKen Killings obtained their house 40 years ago, perhaps as New Yorkers opting for small-town safety for raising three children.
