Maps allow a Las Vegan access two times in Bakerhaven to $10,000 in Small, Unmarked Puzzles, 13th mystery in the Puzzle Lady series authored by Parnell Hall (Oct. 31, 1934-Dec. 15, 2020).
Number Puzzle Lady Cora Felton brakes at the boarded-up Chevron on the southwest corner of North Street and Maple 1.5 miles (2.41 kilometers) north of town. She crams $10,000 into a 20-year-old pump conserving its last, $21.42 sale for gas at $1.69 per gallon instead of the Dumpster drop-off containing a corpse. She daily drives past Bakerhaven mall to drop in at the steel- and stone-designed, two-story Bakerhaven Hospital dedicated in 1978 despite the old domiciling until 1984.
Bakerhaven Hospital entertains a basement morgue; a cafeteria; and rooms for such patients as Cora’s niece, Sherry Carter Grant, new mother of five-week premature daughter Jennifer.
Mrs. Sangstrum finding herself face to face with a dead man followed the changing- and morgue-room interconnecting door within the medical examiner’s private offices flying open.
Dr. Barney Nathan gets death causes and death times for the Chevron Dumpster-guarded dead man, and then for two more corpses, in Bakerhaven Hospital's basement-wing morgue. Bakerhaven Cemetery at 1567 Oak Lane and the maple grove 1.5 miles (2.41 kilometers) from town outskirts respectively harbor a young blonde and a 45-year-old man. Cora itinerates infrequently to such inviting Bakerhaven eateries as Country Kitchen, Mary Cushman’s Bake Shop and Starbucks even as she investigates blackmail- and ill will-inspired incidents.
A Las Vegan, perhaps with digital apps and road maps, journeys across the United States to Manhattan, then to Bakerhaven in $10,000 in Small, Unmarked Puzzles.
Keeping ex-husband Melvin Crabtree away from the Las Vegan kindles Cora not knuckling under to what County Prosecutor Henry Firth and Judge Hobbs know as safe.
Police Chief Dale Harper lets Melvin into the lockup cell, instead of County prison, at Bakerhaven Police Station with Curtis Investigative Agency (CIA) owner-operator Clyde Curtis.
