Nick Araya of TreeCareLA addressed spiked and spikeless Palm Pruning From Start to Finish as live-streamed TreeStuff Webinar Thursday, July 15, 2021, and as International Society of Arboriculture-approved continuing education unit (CEU).
The certified, 20-year career arborist began with such basic palm-tree vocabulary as apical meristem (tiptop [cell-]divided [tissue-growing] wreath) and frond boot (leafy branch [with] trunk-wrapping bases). He correlated palm pruning with annual chores conductible any month for plant aesthetics, people safety and neighborhood security from dried fronds crashing downward and causing fires. He described discouraging fire hazards of dealing with dead, diseased, drooping, dry, dying fronds flame-ignitible from deploying chain saws with spark arrestors off and from dryness.
Palm pruning eliminates dead fronds, dried flowers, dry seed pods and frond sheaths even as it extracts no frond boots whose stem-embedded, stem-embellishing ends endanger nothing.

Dry-frond flammability; chain saw-, climbing spikes-, non-sterilized pruner-spread fungal diseases; palm heart-feeding by South American palm weevils (Rhynchophorus palmarum); and skirt failure figure among palm-tree fatalities.
Skirt failure grieves emergency, firefighter and police first-responders with generally ascending, palm-pruning climbers suffocated and trapped when dead-frond groups simultaneously and suddenly go downward and groundward. It happens without the pruning schedules and the visual inspections that hinder palm trees harboring fronds hanging hazardously, heavily from age-related, bacterial, environmental, fungal, invertebrate harm. It is impossible to identify palm-tree age from palm-tree stem diameter, identical more or less after the immature, initial interval and influenced by trunk diameter erosion.
Regular palm pruning, regular visual inspections throughout species-judged 40- to 100-year life cycles join against stem diameters unacceptably, unsafely eroded and shrunken by 25-plus percent.

Keeping away from chain saws and climbing spikes, keeping to inspection and pruning schedules and keeping up on palm-tree species kindle effective, secure tree-ascending, tree-descending climbs.
Palm-climbing, palm-pruning efficiency and safety link to locating up, in, down by the single rope technique while lodging lightweight climbing and pruning equipment in safety lanyards. A throw line manipulated into the palm-tree head by manual or mechanical-launch means or by drone maneuvers must not move palm-pruning climbers amid menacing palm-tree parts. Palm-pruning climbers need to note nasty frond neighbors and niches, not flexible stems nodding nimbly intact, nearly never nipped in two during high-rain, high-runoff, high-wind events.
The 130-minute-long TreeStuff webinar by the 10-year owner of Hyde Park neighborhood-headquartered tree-care operations observed palm pruning over skin-, organ-, muscle-opening frond edges and frond-obscured thorns.

Proper species identification, for proper age profiles and palm pruning, proceeds from perceiving such patterns as possessing fan- or feather-like fronds and producing thorns or not.
Canary Island (Phoenix canariensis) and dwarf (Phoenix roebelenii) date palm trees qualify as Arecaceae palm family members quartering feather-like fronds and spiny thorns or thorny spines. King (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana) and queen (Syragrus romanzoffiana) palm trees rank among Arecaceae palm family members retaining no spiny thorns or thorny spines and revealing feathery fronds. Windmill (Trachycarpus fortunei) palm trees similarize California (Washingtonia filifera) and Mexican (Washingtonia robusta) fan palm trees as Arecaceae palm family spine-sheltering, thorn-sustaining members with fan-shaped fronds.
Thomas Magnum, P.I. tends no trees but perhaps high-end palm pruning and TreeStuff webinars tempt Jay Hernandez, who twins Nick Araya in looks, talk and walk.
