On Wednesday, March 2, 2016, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tackles climate change by delivering the Globe 2016 conference’s keynote speech and meeting with First Nations, Inuit and Metis leaders prior to the Thursday’s First Ministers’ Meeting, all occurring in Vancouver, British Columbia.

“I look forward to working with the Premiers on combatting climate change and moving toward a greener, more sustainable Canadian economy better positioned to compete globally in the areas of clean knowledge and technologies,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tackles climate change in his office’s Feb. 10 announcement of the meetings.

Wednesday’s meeting with Indigenous leaders and Thursday’s subsequent meeting with Canada’s first ministers aim to build on commitments toward global climate change reductions made by Canada at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP 21, held at Paris’ Le Bourget Exhibition Center from Nov. 30 to Dec. 12.

Justin Trudeau’s meeting March 2 with Indigenous leaders underscores the necessity for Indigenous involvement in all-inclusive climate change strategies as expressed in the Canadian prime minister’s COP 21 opening day speech Monday, Nov. 30, 2015.

“Indigenous peoples have known for thousands of years how to care for our planet,” the COP 21 speech by Canada’s 23rd prime minister points out. “The rest of us have a lot to learn. And no time to waste.”

The Globe 2016 Conference and Innovation Exposition (Globe 2016) takes place from Wednesday, March 2, to Friday, March 4, as North America’s largest and most influential international environmental business summit. Globe 2016 aims to continue on the climate change path envisioned at COP 21.

Christy Clark, 35th Premier of British Columbia, and Wayne T. Smith, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of BASF Corporation, join the Canadian prime minister March 2 for Globe 2016’s Opening Plenary. First minister Clark’s appearance at Globe 2016 takes place one day after the first-month anniversary of the landmark Great Bear Rainforest Order for coastal British Columbia. Established legally by publication Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, in The British Columbia Gazette, the Great Bear Rainforest Order received its ceremonial announcement Monday, Feb. 1, in Vancouver at the University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology. CEO Wayne T. Smith journeys to Globe 2016 after participating in a fireside chat Monday, Feb. 29, to kick off the U.S. Department of Energy’s seventh annual ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit. The summit showcases innovative solutions to energy challenges.

As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tackles climate change less than three months after COP 21, he will bring Wednesday's discussion inputs by Indigenous leaders to Thursday’s First Ministers’ Meeting (FMM).

“Canada’s Indigenous peoples have a sacred relationship with the Earth,” Canada’s first second-generation prime minister states in the Feb. 10 news release. “Their unique perspective will guide us in developing policies that ensure our land, air and water are protected for future generations.”

The First Ministers’ Meeting aims for the development of a pan-Canadian framework for clean economic growth based on emission reductions. The news release issued Wednesday, Feb. 10, by the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada announces the March 2 and March 3 meetings as providing critical focus on Canada-wide concerns about climate change as well as on Canada’s potential for global clean energy leadership.

“The First Ministers will consider all policy measures at their disposal to make sure Canada can take advantage of the significant appetite for expertise in the clean growth economy. The government is committed to working together with the provinces, territories, and Indigenous leaders to ensure a sustainable future for all Canadians, our children, and our grandchildren,” states the Feb. 10 news release.
