Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank Diamond Heist Accomplice Not Eliser Mishali

Summary: Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank diamond heist investigations and proceedings traced nothing to Eliser Mishali and something to Yehuda Mishali in November 2009.

Belgian investigators of the Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank diamond heist March 2-5, 2007, appeared to advance in auspicious directions with the arrest of a suspected accomplice in Frankfurt, Germany, April 4, 2007.

Availability online and in print of the composite sketch brought up the birth name and the personal and professional biography behind the alias Carlos Hector Flomenbaum. The correct name and curriculum vitae came from unspecified sources in the United States and confirmed the stolen identity and passport holder's conversing in American English. United States authorities described the main perpetrator and his accomplice as two possible companions from Israel, where the real Flomenbaum declared his passport stolen in 2001.

The behavioral and physical descriptions by bank employees and the composite sketch from an Antwerp police artist elicited the name Yehuda Mishali from the United States.

Jean-Pierre De Lamper, Christophe Matthijssens and Johan Van Baelen, for Gazet van Antwerpen (Antwerp Gazette) in Belgium April 14, 2007, furnished facts about Eliser Mishali's arrest.

Online news sources initially gave Mishali an age of 47 years, Israeli citizenship and nationality and suspect status as Antwerp ABN AMRO bank diamond heist accomplice. Online news sources in various European languages had as the 55-year-old perpetrator the name of Israeli national Yehuda Mishali, with an alias as 60-year-old Mordechai Meshaly. DH.be online news April 16, 2007, indicated that "Il n'est pas encore établi s'ils ont un lien de parenté" ("It isn't established yet whether they're relatives").

Dominique Reyniers, Antwerp Prosecutor's spokesperson, judged Eliser Mishali's journeying "des milliers de kilomètres" ("thousands of kilometers") in Germany and the Netherlands since March 15, 2007, suspicious.

Reyniers knew that "il (Eliser Mishali) a oublié d'effacer les données dans son GPS" ("He forgot to erase the memory on his GPS [Global Positioning System]").

The spokeswoman labeled as priority that "Nous allons maintenant vérifier s'il n'a pas caché ou confié une partie de son butin le long de ce trajet." The rented all-terrain vehicle's three-week data meant "We're going now to verify whether he (Mishali) hid or handed over part of the loot during his trip." Examiners noted that the GPS "leverde een twintigtal adressen op waar de verdachte naartoe was gebold, van hotels maar ook in the middle of nowhere (sic)."

The 3,000- to 4,000-kilometer (1,864.11- to 2,485.85-mile) data obtained "20-some addresses to which the suspect had gone, from hotels but also to the middle of nowhere."

A stopover in Frankfurt on a Netherlands-Israel flight permitted German police to put Eliser Mishali in jail as the Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank diamond heist accomplice.

Searches quit Mishali of "enkele duizenden euro en een bewijs van de verkoop van twee partijen van telkens 500 karaat aan een Indiër," not of diamonds. Searches of Mishali's person and possessions revealed "several thousand euros and a proof of the sale of two batches of 500 carats each to an Indian." Correctional court scheduled proceedings March 30, June 22 and Oct. 19, 2009, before stopping Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank diamond heist charges against Eliser Mishali in November.

The two-plus-year Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank diamond heist investigations and proceedings turned up nothing against the extradited Eliser Mishali and something against the vanished Yehuda Mishali.

Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank Diamond Heist: Stolen Identity, Stolen Diamonds

Summary: The Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank diamond heist in Belgium March 2-5, 2007, remains unsolved since stolen diamonds reveal a stolen identity and a stolen passport.

The Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank diamond heist in Belgium March 2-5, 2007, allows no answers about the whereabouts of the perpetrator, despite his one-year acquaintance with staff, and his precious purloined piles.

The sole diamond heist perpetrator daily bestowed consistently charming and courteous conduct and conversation upon, and even regularly brought chocolates for, Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank staff. No surveillance system caught complete views of the customer calling himself Carlos Hector Flomenbaum even though police constructed a sketch for public circulation after the crime. No closed-circuit television, heat monitor, light or seismic sensor or motion detector disclosed any dangers to vault deposits during the perpetrator's last days at ABN AMRO.

The self-described retired, successful businessman enjoyed exclusive status as an unsupervised keyholder for entering and exiting the bank vault, anytime, to examine safe deposit box contents.

The ABN AMRO-registered client followed his daily schedule of frequenting the bank vault once or twice daily during operating hours through April 2 or 5, 2007.

No staff person ever got another glimpse of the Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank diamond heist perpetrator or of five vault boxes full of diamonds and gems. They had handed the key to the VIP section of the bank vault over to the holder of an identity stolen from a stolen Argentinian passport. Inspection of the bank vault April 5, 2007, identified deposit box losses at €26 million ($28 million) in 120,000 carats of cut, polished and rough diamonds.

The Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank diamond heist perpetrator never jimmied any locks because of 24-7 electronic card access to five boxes unlocked for cutters and pawnbrokers.

Staff at Pelikaanstraat 70-76 in the 1-square-mile (2.59-square-kilometer) Diamond Quarter (Diamantkwartier) knew of the Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank diamond heist perpetrator as a bespectacled, self-described pensioner.

Staff listed bushy eyebrows, clean-shaven face, dilated pupils and gray hair under a dark baseball cap for a gentleman 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 meters) tall. They mentioned an age of 55 to 60 years, an unspecified American speech pattern in English and no known physical address or professional acquaintances in Belgium. The Associated Press Archive article Belgium Diamonds March 13, 2007, noted that "a passport in that name (Flomenbaum) was stolen in Israel a few years ago."

Dominique Reyniers, Antwerp Prosecutor's spokesperson, offered March 12, 2007, that "The person who delivers the golden tip can expect a reward of 2 (m) million euros."

Ian Smillie, Lansana Gberie and Ralph Hazleton presented ABN AMRO and Antwerpse Diamantbank (Antwerp Diamond Bank) as processing 90 percent of Antwerp's diamond transactions in 2000.

Stephen Castle for The Independent March 18, 2007, quoted Philip Claes, Hoge Raad voor Diamant (Diamond High Council) spokesman, on ABN AMRO's million-euro ($1,128,500) security system. Claes revealed that "despite all the efforts one makes in investing in (an expensive hi-tech) security (system), when a human error is made nothing can help." He said that "You can have all the (bank) safety and security you want, but if someone uses their charm to mislead people it won't help."

What tempted the Antwerp ABN AMRO Bank diamond heist perpetrator to take rough diamonds that tender no Kimberley Process-certified origins outside Angola, Liberia and Sierra Leone?
