Urban Forest Resilience Asks Species Diversity of Milwaukee Metropolitan Area

Summary: Urban forest resilience asks species diversity of Milwaukee metropolitan area, according to an article in Arboriculture & Urban Forestry of September 2023.

Norway maple trees (Acer platanoides) abound as number 1 among the 10 commonest species of 439,974 trees in a Milwaukee metropolitan area tree inventory. They accept that acclaim in terms of the overall inventory. They likewise accept it in terms of those inventoried trees with diameters under 25.4 centimeters (under 10 inches) at breast height (DBH), 4.5 feet (3.72 meters) above ground level; illustration of Acer platanoides L. Spitzahorn (A=blütenzweig "flowering branch"; B=ausgewachsenes Blatt "mature leaf"; C=Frucht "fruit"; 1=männliche Blute von oben "male flower from above"; 2=desgl. von unten "same from below"; 3=Staubblätter "stamens"; 4=weibliche Blüte "female flower"; 5=Längsschnitt durch eine Zwitterblüte "longitudinal section through hermaphrodite flower"; 6=Same 1 bis 6 vergrößert "seeds 1 to 6 enlarged"), in Otto Wilhelm Thomé, Prof. Dr. Thomé's Flora von Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz, in wort und bild, für schule und haus, Band III (1888), Plate 325, opposite page 24: Biodiversity Heritage Library (BioDivLibrary), Public Domain, via Flickr

Urban forest resilience asks species diversity of Milwaukee metropolitan area, according to an article by Elton Rogers, Paul Ries and Daniel Buckler in the September 2023 issue of Arboriculture & Urban Forestry.
The article Examining Species Diversity and Urban Forest Resilience in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin (USA) Metropolitan Area broaches brief-outbreak, short-duration pulse and ecosystem-bruising, long-duration press tree-battering disturbances. Economic considerations, maintenance practices, organizational capacity, species and structural composition configure urban forest resilience to climate change, compaction, disturbance, infrastructure, insect, pollution, storm and vandalism-caused challenges. Dutch elm disease (Ophiostoma himal, novo-ulmi, ulmi) and emerald ash borers (Agrilus planipennis) respectively devastated nearly all Milwaukee city elms (Ulmus americana) and ashes (Fraxinus spp).
Urban tree resilience expects and enables air-pollution and carbon sequestration, combined-sewer overflow and stormwater-runoff decreases, crime reduction, human-health and property-value increases and urban heat island reduction.

Two Dutch elm disease species (DED, as Ophiostoma ulmi and Ophiostoma novo-ulmi) acclimated themselves to the North American ambiance in 1928 and in the 1940s, respectively. They accompany alien Asian banded (Scolytus schevyrewi) and alien smaller European (Scolytus multistriatus) elm bark beetles and native North American (Hylurgopinus rufipes) elm bark beetles. They accomplished within the 40 years between 1956 and 1996 street removals of 106,732 American elms (Ulmus Americana) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (from Ojibwe ominowakiing, “gathering place [by the water]”?; Miami meeskohsinki or Algonquin meskousing, “it [the Wisconsin River] lies red” or from Menominee wēskōhsek, “a good place” or from Ojibwe miskwasiniig, “red sandstone [dells of the Wisconsin River]” or from Ojibwe wiishihkaanhs, “little [beaver and muskrat] lodge”?). Nearly all 106,732 American elms disease-felled and nearly all ash species, as 17 percent of urban-forested Milwaukee, borer-felled frustrated Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District deep-tunnel holding capacity.
The tree inventory of 439,974 street-located trees of 40 cemetery, city, college, county-park, town or village organizations generated data that guarded up-to-dateness if not data-type consistency. Their dataset for vulnerability-framework applications held back no-plant zones; species heralding less than 0.05 percent (219 trees) of total inventory; standing dead trees; stumps; vacant sites. Vulnerability frameworks invoke species exposure and sensitivity to minimum-temperature hardiness-zone projections and to 30-plus-degree-Celsius- (86-plus-degrees-Fahrenheit-) days heat-zone projections and adaptation to urban-environment biological factors and disturbances.
Air-pollution, browse, disease, drought, flood, ice, insect-pest, invasive-plant, salt, soil and water pollution, temperature-gradient and wind disturbances jeopardize urban forest resilience in the Milwaukee metropolitan area.

Emerald ash borers (Agrilus planipennis) account, in 2008, for another anathema, after Dutch elm disease of the 1950s to 1990s, to mass urban tree health in Milwaukee metropolitan area. They accrued casualty after casualty of susceptible ash species such as Fraxinus americana and Fraxinus pennsylvanica). The two latter species nevertheless accumulated accolades, achieved during the Milwaukee metropolitan area tree inventory, as among the top 20 most utilized species; Saturday, June 14, 2014, 21:28, image of emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis), which emerged Monday, June 9, 2014, in northern Virginia, shows metallic green upperside, with elytra (wings) spread to show "colorful" reddish to purplish-hued abdomen: Benjamin Smith from United States, CC BY 2.0 Generic, via Wikimedia Commons

Biological factor types kindle as adaptability modification factors competition-light, edaphic specificity of suitable-habitat soil requirements, invasive-potential landscape and planting-site specificity, nursery-propagation, planting-establishment, required-maintenance and restricted-rooting conditions.
Norway maple (Acer platanoides) logs commonest species overall at 25.93 percent, and commonest species with under-25.4-centimeter (under-10-inch) diameters breast-high (DBH) at 13.87 percent, of total inventory. Some inventories may proxy breast-high diameter measurements for tree age and perhaps thereby mobilize mistaken matches of newer plantings and younger trees with higher species diversity. Low climate change-projected high vulnerability by century end netted red pine (Pinus resinosa), at 0.08 percent of total inventory and not among the 30 most-planted species.
Respective Low- and High-projected cold hardiness zones 6 and 7 and heat zones 7 and 9 occasion Milwaukee metropolitan area species diversity opposing urban forest resilience.

Madison (for Fourth Unitedstatesian President [March 4, 1809-March 4, 1817] James Madison, March 16, 1751-June 28, 1836), Dane County (for Continental Congress representative Nathan Dane, Dec. 29, 1752-Feb. 15, 1835), Wisconsin, about 89 minutes from its downtown to downtown Milwaukee 79.4 miles (127.78 kilometers) away, acknowledges congruent and similar urban tree canopies. The Low climate change-projected scenario of hardiness zone 6 and heat zone 7 addresses red pine (Pinus resinosa) as the only vulnerable for commonly planted species in Milwaukee metropolitan area by 21st-century end; Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, image of red pine (Pinus resinosa) near Madison, Wisconsin: Emery, CC BY SA 2.5 Generic, via Wikimedia Commons

Low and High climate change-projected scenarios respectively present 90.15 and 55.52 percent of inventoried trees as low to low-moderate vulnerable and as moderately, moderately-high, highly vulnerable.
Numbers qualifying as moderately vulnerable to urban-forest threats trees with under-25.4-centimeter (under-10-inch) diameters queue increasingly higher in their quantification from Low to High climate change-projected scenarios. Study limitations range from 7.03 percent of inventoried trees identifiable to unscorable genus levels and without crabapple trees (Malus spp) to inventories revealing no tree-diameter data. Press- and pulse-suffering trees in Low and High climate-changed scenarios stress equally trees under and over 25.4-centimeter (10-inch) breast-high diameters 4.5-foot (1.372-meter) heights above ground level.
Emerald ash borer-troubled Milwaukee metropolitan area tenders 11.63 percent of inventoried trees as emerald ash borer-troubled and thereby transitions 4,617 actual planting sites into 8,799 potential.

Urban tree canopies admit to such ecosystem benefits as carbon storage, energy savings, pollution control and stormwater runoff reduction. The 106,732 American elms (Ulmus americana) afflicted with Dutch elm disease from the 1950s to the 1990s on Milwaukee city streets afflicted the adulated, advanced Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District with runaway stormwater runoff; Sunday, Sep. 18, 2005, 16:10, image of Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) central headquarters and laboratory located along Menomonee River near downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Sulfur at English Wikipedia, CC BY SA 3.0 Unported, via Wikimedia Commons
