Magnum PI and Twins Laieikawai and Laielohelohe Allow a Dead Ringer

Summary: Action drama television series Magnum PI season 5 episode 6 Thursday, July 6, 2023, and twins Laieikawai and Laielohelohe allow a Dead Ringer.

"God talks to human beings through many vectors: through each other, through organized religion, through the great books of those religions, through wise people, through art and music and literature and poetry, but nowhere with such detail and grace and color and joy as through creation. When we destroy a species, when we destroy a special place, we're diminishing our capacity to sense the divine, understand who God is and what our own potential is." Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., April 19, 2023, Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts.

The climbing screwpine ('ie'ie locally, Freycinetia arborea scientifically) leaf (from Hawaiian lāʻie, "screwpine leaf") accounts for the names of twins Laieikawai and Laielohelohe (Lāʻieikawai, from Hawaiian lāʻie ika wai, “leaf floating [in] water”; La’ielohelohe, from lāʻie lohe, “leaf obedient”). Ancient legends about the beautiful twin sisters accumulate in the areas associated with their earthly and divine lives: Hawaii, Kauai and Oahu (from Hawaiian ha wai 'i, "breath life-force supreme"; kaua'i, "place around the neck"?; o'ahu, "gathering place") islands; illustration of Freycinetia arborea by Scottish-born botanist and botanical illustrator Isabella McHutcheson Sinclair (1842-Dec. 29, 1900), Indigenous Flowers of the Hawaiian Islands (1885), Plate 3: Not in copyright, via Biodiversity Heritage Library

Action drama television series Magnum PI season 5 episode 6 debuted Sunday, March 19, rerun Sunday, May 21, and Thursday, July 6, 2023, and twins Laieikawai and Laielohelohe allow a Dead Ringer.
Episode 82 overall, as the 6th Magnum episode for NBC television season 2022-2023, borrows the idiomatic dead ringer for beings baring perhaps complete, perhaps superficial resemblances. The two-word phrase calls to mind twins Laieikawai and Laielohelohe (Lāʻieikawai, from Hawaiian lāʻie ika wai, “leaf floating [in] water”; La’ielohelohe, from lāʻie lohe, “leaf obedient”). The Kaulanpoko and the Koolauloa northern lands on Oahu island (from Hawaiian o’ahu, “gathering place”) domicile Alii (from Hawaiian ali’i, “chief”) Kahauokapaka and his wife Malaekahana.
Chief Kahauokapaka expects his first-born to be a son who eases his parents into old age and proper burial and ensures parental legacies, including young daughters.

Queen Malaekahana achieved albeit clandestine motherhood with her fifth pregnancy. Husband Kahauokapaka, as Alii Nui (from Hawaiian ali'i nui, "chief principal") of the Kaulanpoko and the Koolauloa northern lands on Oahu island (from Hawaiian o’ahu, “gathering place”), acknowledged as living issue only first-born male and second-born female children. His executioner administered exposure deaths to four first-born royal daughters. Malaekahana admitted to admiring blue-lined wrasse fish (ohua locally, Stethojulis albovittata scientifically) from her husband's favoritest fishing area, away from her during her fifth delivery; illustration of Stethojulis albovittata Kolreuter, twice natural size, by Japanese artist Kako Morita, lithographed by Julius Bien & Co., New York, in David Starr Jordan and Barton Warren Evermann, The Aquatic Resources of the Hawaiian Islands, Part I The Shore Fishes (issued July 29, 1905), Plate XXVI: Not in copyright, via Biodiversity Heritage Library

Any first-born son functions as defense of his parents and of his sisters, whom Chief Kahauokapaka favors if second-, second-plus-born, and frowns upon if first-born, daughters.
Queen Malaekahana (from Hawaiian Mālaekahana) grieves four successive times when her husband gives each one of these first-, second-, third- and fourth-born daughters to his executioner. Holding her left hand out palm upward to her priest just before her delivery heralds a female birth that she has to hide from King Kahauokapaka. Her priest insists, once labor pains initiate, upon her impelling her husband itinerating to his favorite fishpond for blue-lined wrasse fish (ohua locally, Stethojulis albovittata scientifically).
Dead Ringer as lookalike, not fraternal, twins thematically joins Magnum PI and Queen Malaekahana, the latter jubilating from her fifth pregnancy identical princesses Laieikawai and Laielohelohe.

Oahu island's Kaulanpoko and the Koolauloa northern lands agreed with Queen Malaekahana as conception abode for Princesses Laieikawai and Laielohelohe. Northern Oahu's Laie fugitive sanctuary agreed as birth abode for the twin princesses. First the volcanic-rock pond Waiapuka and then the Paliuli (from Hawaiian pali uli, "green cliff") precipice on Hawaii island agreed as hiding-place abodes for Princess Laieikawai; "The Princess of Paliuli," 1934 mural by Juliette May Fraser (1887-1993), Hawaii State Public Library, Honolulu, O'ahu: Public Domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Queen consort mother Waka and the royal priest respectively keep Laie- (from Hawaiian lāʻie, “climbing screwpine [Freycinetia arborea]) birthed first-born twin, Laieikawai, and second-born twin, Laielohelohe.
Two thunder rolls lead High Chief Kahauokapaka back home to lament the two lies, of a deformed newborn left lying lifelessly outside the chiefly living space. Priestly advice and grandmotherly supernatural power merge to make into a newborn nursery a massive cave within basaltic volcanic rocks moistened by rain-fed streams and waterfalls. Noted prophet Hulumaniani of Kauai island (from Hawaiian kaua’i, “place around the neck”) notices a rainbow nurtured by cloudless sunshine and misty skies over coastal Oahu.
A non-weather-dependent rainbow occurs over the occupancy of a subsequent great chief or king, chieftainess or queen, such as of Dead Ringer twins Laieikawai and Laielohelohe.

Iiwipolena (from Hawaiian 'iwi, "reddish" via Hawaiian 'i'iwi polena) birds (iiwi locally, scarlet honeycreeper commonly, Drepanis coccinea scientifically) alerted ancient Hawaiians to Laielohelohe royal presences. The immature, juvenile, young bird answers to the name iiwipolena; illustration of Vestiaria coccinea by F.W. Frohawk, in The Birds of the Sandwich Islands: Public Domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Waka perceives Prophet Hulumaniani and, with Koolau priestly presence in premonitory dreams, positions Laieikawai on Paliuli, southeast Hawaii (from Hawaiian ha wai ‘i, “breath life-force supreme”).
Kaonohiokala, brother of Kahalaomapuana (“Breath of Many Flowers”), the latter’s four older sisters and Kauai Chief Aiwohikupua, and the Kauai King respectively quest Laieikawai and Laielohelohe. They respectively resort to extramarital romances with sister-in-law Laielohelohe and Hinaikamalama of Hana, Maui island, for which Kaonohiokala (“Eye of the Sun”) reverts to wandering ghostdom. Hulumaniani and Kahalaomapuana respectively sovereign the Hawaiian islands sheltering Laieikawai, Laielohelohe and, as Kawahineokaliula (“The Lady of the Twilight”), the latter’s child, and the solar realm.
One turning into a Dead Ringer for another triggers tragedy for Magnum PI even as it transforms twins Laieikawai and Laielohelohe into admired ancient Hawaiian deities.
