'Uki'uki Hawaiian lilies aid memory of abduction routes and assist an abductee in identifying her abductor on Magnum PI's The Ties That Bind crime action drama television series episode Nov. 19, 2018.
Director Ron Underwood and writer Peter Lenkov bid private investigator Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez) to backtrack Amanda Sako (Lyrica Okano), eyes shut, through blindfold-blocked, scent-borne memories. Amanda calls up eucalyptus and mint scents for Magnum and his Robin's Nest residence colleagues, curator Teuila Tuileta (Amy Hill) and majordomo Juliet Higgins (Perdita Weeks). Teuila, designated as Kumu (from Hawaiian kumu, "teacher") due to diligent deep-diving into everything Hawaiian, discerns from Amanda's descriptions a defining plant in a definite place.
The herbaceous perennial exists indigenously (from Latin indigenus, "born in a country, native") on main Hawaiian islands except for Kahoolawe and Niihau; Marquesas; and New Caledonia.

The Asphodelaceae (from Latin asphodelis, "asphodel" and -āceae, "resembling") family member favors asexual and sexual reproduction-friendly dry to semi-dry or wet, open to part-shaded, well-drained habitats.
Human guidance and Mother Nature germinate viable seeds and grow accent, border, container, ground-covering, understory plants from divided clumps and underground-stemmed rhizomes (from Greek ῥίζα, "root"). Tufted heralds of forested, grassy, lava-field, shrubby and wooded habitats have 0.08-inch (1.9-millimeter) seeds either black, glossy, smooth or rough white-brown or white of variable shapes. The respective seeds respectively indicate blue-purple, brown-purple and brown-white berries from blue-purple, brown-purple and brown-white flowers amid tall-stalked dark, intermediate-stalked light and short-stalked palest green leaves.
Environmental, situational stresses never jeopardize Dianella sandwicensis (from Latin divāna, "little moonlight goddess" and sandwicensis, "[John Montagu, 4th Earl of] Sandwich [Nov. 13, 1718-April 30, 1792]").

One-half to one-inch (1.27- to 2.54-centimeter) diameter berries kindle non-viable seeds non-germinatable within two to four months if they keep afloat in water and pale colors.
Year-round flowering of branching, spike-like, stalked panicles (from Latin pānicula, "little ear of millet, little thread wound on a bobbin") leads to year-round fruiting and seeding. Bissexual, self-pollinating flowers with female and male reproductive parts manifest orange pollen-receiving anthers, yellow pollen-producing stamens and yellow-stalked filaments and match three petals for three sepals. Common-named blue flax lilies and local-named 'uki'uki (from Hawaiian 'uki, "sedge" and 'uki'uki, "vexed") net one-inch- (2.54-centimeter-) wide, 12- to 40-inch- (30.48- to 101.6-centimeter-) long leaves.
'Uki'uki Hawaiian lilies, observed scientifically by William Hooker (July 6, 1785-Aug. 12, 1865) and George Arnott (Feb. 6, 1799-June 17, 1868), offer strap-like foliage arching groundward.

Flexible, grass-like, linear, long, slender, smooth, spear-shaped, tough leaves possess keeled, prominent midribs; mature, rounded 3- to 5-foot (0.91- to 1.52-meter) spreads; and overlapping leaf bases.
Dark green-leafed, light green-leafed and palest green-leafed forms respectively queue as under 1-foot- (0.31-meter-), between 1- and 2.5-foot- (0.31- to 0.76-meter-) and 2.5-plus-foot- (0.76-plus-plus-meter-) tall plants. Hand-picking, hose water, insecticidal soap and soapy water remove such natural enemies and outdoor pests as aphids, mealy bugs and white scale from Hawaiian residential gardens. Ancient Hawaiians saved berries for clothing dyes and lei hua (from Hawaiian lei, "strung" and hua, "seed") and leaves for cordage, lashes, three-ply braids and weaving.
Perhaps talismanic 'uki'uki Hawaiian lilies turn Magnum PI's first season ninth episode, The Ties That Bind, into trending reruns March 2, 2019, and May 23, 2020.
