The 2018-2019 Met Opera season premiere of Carmen is Tuesday, Oct. 30, amid continuing performances of Muhly’s Marnie and
Puccini’s Tosca during the season’s sixth week.
The 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s sixth week opens with the first of two performances of Tosca by Italian opera composer
Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924). The week’s first Tosca performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, Monday, Oct. 29. The week’s second Tosca performance is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m.
The 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s premiere of Tosca took place Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. The season’s performances
revive Sir David McVicar’s production. The Scottish opera and theatre director’s new production debuted Dec. 31, 2017, during the Metropolitan Opera’s 951st performance of Tosca.
The 2018-2019 Met Opera’s season premiere of Carmen by French Romantic Era composer Georges Bizet (Oct. 25, 1838-June 3,
1875) is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m., during the season’s sixth week. The week’s schedule includes a second performance of Carmen. Carmen’s second performance takes place Saturday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m.
Including the season premiere, the 2018-2019 Met Opera season is offering 14 performances of Carmen. In addition to the sixth week’s Saturday, Nov. 3, performance, the 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s schedule stages three performances in November. The month’s additional performances are timed according to Eastern Standard Time. November’s last three performances take place Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 10, at 8 p.m.; Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m.
The 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s performances of Carmen resume after the new year. Winter performances are given in January and February. January’s performances take place Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 12, at 8:30 p.m.; Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m.; Monday, Jan. 21, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m. Three February performances are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m.; Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 7:30 p.m; and Friday, Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m.
The performance Saturday, Feb. 2, is also available to a wider audience as a Saturday matinee radio broadcast. Carmen
numbers as 10th in the season’s 24 Saturday matinee broadcasts.
The Metropolitan Opera presents Carmen as the first of two Saturday matinee radio broadcasts during the 2018-2019 Met Opera season. The second Bizet radio broadcasted opera is Les Pêcheurs de Perles. Bizet’s Ceylon-based opera is the Saturday, May 4, 2019, Saturday matinee radio broadcast. Les Pêcheurs de Perles closes the 2018-2019 Saturday matinee radio broadcast season as the last of the season’s 24 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts.
The 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s staging of Carmen revives Sir Richard Eyre’s production. The English film, opera,
television and theatre director’s new production debuted Dec. 31, 2009, in the Metropolitan Opera’s 946th performance of Carmen.
Sir Eyre’s production team comprises Rob Howell, set and costume designer; Peter Mumford, lighting designer; and Christopher Wheeldon, choreographer. Paula Williams is the revival stage director.
The 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s sixth week also includes two performances of Marnie by American contemporary classical music composer Nico Muhly. The week’s Marnie performances are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m.
Marnie’s Metropolitan Opera premiere occurred Friday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. English novelist Winston Graham’s same-named novel, published in 1961, inspired Muhly’s opera. English film director and producer Sir Alfred Hitchcock’s (Aug. 13, 1899-April 29, 1980) same named film, released in 1964, was an adaptation of Graham’s psychological novel.
The Metropolitan Opera includes Marnie in the 2018-2019 season’s Saturday matinee radio broadcast schedule. Marnie is the
Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, Saturday matinee radio broadcast. Muhly’s opera numbers ninth in the season’s roster of 24 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts.
The takeaway for the 2018-2019 Met Opera season premiere of Carmen Tuesday, Oct. 30, are that Bizet’s opera joins continuing performances of Nico Muhly’s Marnie and Puccini’s Tosca in the 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s sixth week.
