The 2018-2019 Met Opera season premiere of Tosca is Thursday, Oct. 25, amid continuing performances of Muhly’s Marnie ad Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West during the season’s fifth week.
The 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s fifth week opens with the first of two performances of Marnie by American contemporary classical music composer Nico Muhly. The performance Monday, Oct. 22, begins at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The week’s second performance is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m.
Marnie’s Metropolitan Opera premiere took place Friday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. Muhly composed Marnie as the second of two operas commissioned from him by the Metropolitan Opera. Two Boys was Muhly’s first Met-commissioned opera. Two Boys received its United States premiere at the Metropolitan Opera Oct. 21, 2013.
The 2018-2019 season’s fifth week also includes two performances of La Fanciulla del West by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924). The week’s performances of La Fanciulla del West are scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m.
Saturday’s performance is available through the 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s Live in HD schedule. La Fanciulla del West is transmitted beginning at 12:55 p.m. as the third of the season’s 10 high-definition videos. The Metropolitan Opera transmits high-definition videos from the opera house via satellite to more than 2,200 cinema screens in over 70 countries.
The 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s premiere of Puccini’s Tosca takes place Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. The season’s premiere is the only performance of Tosca during the 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s fifth week.
Including the season premiere, the Metropolitan Opera gives 13 performances of Tosca during the 2018-2019 season. Beyond October’s season premiere, a second performance also takes place in October. The month’s second performance is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m.
Five more autumn performances are slated for November. The month’s first performance takes place Friday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. November’s subsequent performances are timed according to Eastern Standard Time. November’s four remaining performances are scheduled for Monday, Nov. 5, at 8 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m.
The Metropolitan Opera resumes performances of Tosca in spring 2019. Daylight savings time is in effect for the spring performances.
Four performances are slated for March. The month’s performances take place Monday, March 18, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, March 23, at 8 p.m.; Tuesday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, March 29, at 8 p.m.
Two performances are scheduled for April. The month’s first performance begins Tuesday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m. The month’s second performance is slated to begin Saturday, April 6, at 1 p.m.
The Saturday, April 6, performance closes the 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s schedule of Tosca performances. The closing performance also reaches audiences as the 19th of 24 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts during the 2019-2019 Met Opera season.
Tosca appears as the last of three Puccini operas in the 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s Saturday matinee radio broadcast schedule. Il Trittico is transmitted Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018, beginning at 12:30 p.m. EST, as the season’s second Saturday matinee radio broadcast. La Fanciulla del West is the second Puccini opera on the 2018-2019 season’s Saturday matinee radio broadcast lineup. La Fanciulla del West broadcasts Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018, as fourth in the season’s 24 scheduled Saturday matinee radio broadcasts.
The 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s performances of Tosca revive Sir David McVicar’s production. The Scottish opera and theatre director’s staging debuted Dec. 31, 2017, as a new production during the Metropolitan Opera’s 951st performance of Tosca.
Sir McVicar’s production team comprises John Macfarlane, set and costume designer; David Finn, lighting director; and Leah Hausman, movement director. Jonathon Loy is the revival stage director for the 2018-2019 season’s performances.
The takeaways for the 2018-2019 Met Opera season premiere of Tosca Thursday, Oct. 25, are that the season’s staging represents the first revival of Scottish opera and theatre director Sir David McVicar’s new 2017-2018 production and that the 2018-2019 season’s fifth week continues performances of Muhly’s Marnie and Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West.
