American Staffordshire Terrier and Elementary's Pushing Buttons

An alleged break-in assumes more accurate aspects of canine mischief by an American Staffordshire Terrier in the Pushing Buttons episode May 14, 2018, of the Columbia Broadcasting System procedural drama Elementary series.

Director Christine Moore and writers Robert Doherty, Jeffrey Paul King and Kelly Wheeler bring an American Staffordshire Terrier in to break a six-month-old residential burglary case. Detective Mason (James Monroe Iglehart) cannot catch the criminals who carried off a $100,000 1860 Old Tom Morris long-nose golf club from Mrs. Gertrude Hardcastle's house. Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) discerns "gouge marks on the front leg of the bookcase" as done by the American Staffordshire Terrier "breed known for chewing."

Sherlock explains that, instead of criminal entry, "The dog gnawed at the bookcase until it fell over, breaking the [first floor] window. That tripped the alarm."

Sherlock finds the golf club "in the umbrella stand because Mrs. Hardcastle put it there. She was confused," forgot and feared a filched, not misplaced, valuable.

Mrs. Hardcastle's forgetting the family American Staffordshire Terrier generates boredom, "which they usually express by destructive chewing. Massive destructive chewing," according to Michele Welton on yourpurebredpuppy.com. The breed advisor, canine psychologist, obedience instructor and veterinary technician holds to daily "moderate exercise" and "regular opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things." The author of Teach Your Dog 100 English Words indicates the "[a]thletic and agile," "extremely muscular" American Staffordshire Terrier's "finely tuned reflexes" and "splendid muscle tone."

Welton juxtaposes companionship and "extensive ongoing socialization" to exercise for the "confident," "dependable, good-natured, loyal," "easygoing," "impressive," "well-bred" American Staffordshire Terrier away from "another assertive dog."

The PetWave website keynotes keeping the American Staffordshire Terrier "treated as a family member," "never left tied up alone, outside," "taught to be friendly to people."

PetWave lauds the American Staffordshire Terrier as "a true family dog. Loving and playful" despite ancestral, extinct Bull-and-Terriers linking Old English Bulldogs and Old English Terriers. Cross-breeding maintained Cradley Heath-, Darlaston- and Walsall-located bear-baiters, bull-baiters, bull-killers, dog-fighters and wild boar-killers in England and Walsall-exported guard and hunting dogs in 19th-century North America. United States Walsalls netted the names American Bull, American Pit Bull, Pit Bull and Yankee Terriers until American Kennel Club (AKC) registrations in 1936 and 1973.

Walsall descendants obtained AKC-registered Staffordshire Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier breeds in 1936 and Jan. 1, 1972, and the United Kennel Club-registered American Pit Bull Terrier.

The AKC presents broad-headed, dark-, round-eyed, glossy, stiff-coated, strong-jawed 17- to 18-inch- (43.18- to 45.72-centimeter-) shoulder-high females and 18- to 19-inch- (45.72- to 48.26-centimeter-) shoulder-high males.

Twelve- to 16-year life expectancies queue up for high-cheekboned, straight-tailed, wideset-eyed 40- to 55-pound (18.14- to 24.95-kilogram) females and 55- to 70-pound (24.95- to 31.75-kilogram) males. Round-, wide-muzzled, short-legged, stocky American Staffordshire Terrier adults reveal black, blue, brindle, fawn or red solid colors or in combination with bodies under 80 percent white. American Staffordshire Terrier care-giving schedules bathing bi-annually, dog bones and treats, ear-checking, fetch-playing, nail-trimming, outdoor games and walks, soft-bristled brushing weekly, teeth-brushing weekly and water bowls.

Detective Mason hopefully takes an Officer Friendly tack and talks to Mrs. Hardcastle about treating her American Staffordshire Terrier to quality family time and outdoor activities.
