And a Puzzle to Die On Augments Bakerhaven Acquaintances by One

Summary: And a Puzzle to Die On augments Bakerhaven acquaintances by a dog who apprehends a two-time killer and assures the Puzzle Lady of the best birthday ever.

An older purebred toy poodle answers to the name Buddy, appraises at $1,600 and assists in apprehending a two-time killer and in assembling evidence appropriate to correct analyses of a 20-year-old crime and attracts Puzzle Lady attention; toy poodle, International Dog Show Baltic Winner 2013; Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, 20:03: Томасина, CC BY SA 3.0 Unported, via Wikimedia Commons

And a Puzzle to Die On augments Bakerhaven acquaintances by a dog who apprehends a two-time killer and assures the Puzzle Lady, who appreciates animals more than acrostics, of bestest birthday ever.
Sherry Carter, after substitute nursery-school teaching, braves late-October, winter-boding winds with Mary Cushman’s Bake Shop fellow customers Iris Cooper, Aaron Grant, Dale Harper and Harvey Beerbaum. Aunt Cora Felton, commuter-less without their Toyota, contacts Advanced Book Exchange, Amazon, As the World Turns, Barnes and Noble and eBay websites and chat-room predator Ralph. Draconian diets distance attorney Becky Baldwin from downing pastries and drinking coffee with First Selectman Cooper, Bakerhazen Gazette reporter Grant, Police Chief Harper and cruciverbalist Beerbaum.
Becky employs Cora to establish whether Darryl Daigue enticed 17-year-old Anita Dryer into the Kingman Grove icehouse for dinner-break marijuana, rape and murder 20 years earlier.

Life sentence without parole in the fictitious Brandon State Penitentiary of north-central Connecticut followed a jury trial finding the burger and milkshake diner short-order cook guilty.
Darryl guessed at Ray Tucker, whose pickup window station gave diner waitresses their orders, and 20 years later at counter-boy Ricky Gleason going off with Anita. Sergeant Walpole, with Danbury police, and Dr. Jenkins, as Danbury medical examiner, have Ricky down as drunkenly, fatally hitting a curve-side tree on Red Oak Road. Ricky driving at 90-mile (144.84-kilometer) hourly speeds under influence of .125 blood alcohol levels Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 10 p.m. is misidentified as a traffic accident.
One Danbury acquaintance, black sedan-driving private investigator Peter Burnside, joins Cora’s 150-plus Bakerhaven acquaintances for her surprise birthday bash in Bakerhaven Library’s modern, skylighted, two-story addition.

Peter perhaps knows policeman Sam Brogan, Iris, Mary, Dale, Judge Hobbs, medical examiner Barney Nathan, not Harvey, Clara Harper or Knauer Realty realtor Judy Douglas Knauer.
Perhaps Jimmy, friend of Dale’s daughter Clara and son of librarian Edith and NFL (National Football League) fan Hal Potter, located library-lodged microfilm for Peter beforehand. Black sedan-driving Danbury resident Valerie Thompkins monitored Darryl, whom her used-car dealership-owning husband Marvin Fleckstein, monikered as lifer-researching A.E. Greenhouse, and sex-crimes writer Lester Moffatt met. Anita’s sister Gwendolyn and Darryl’s sister Stacy respectively nestled into Boulder, Colorado, and a third-floor apartment near counter-girl niches in a truck-stop diner outside New Haven.
Darryl occupying Brandon State Penitentiary overlaps with prison occupancies by such Bakerhaven acquaintances as Anita’s brother until Jason obtained parole and girlfriend Cindy Tambourine’s brother Kenneth.

Poaching Valerie’s purebred, $1,600-valued toy poodle from neighbor Cynthia Mayberry’s protective custody puts Cora in Danbury jail and Judge Trilling’s court and Buddy in Carlyle Kennel.
Industrialist Quentin Hawes’ wife Ida Blaine, Dr. Jenkins without his receptionist Margie, State Penitentiary Warden Prufrock and Pilgrim Publishing Editor Mason Westbourne queue among subpoenaed witnesses. Harvey regales Cora with Party Favor and A Puzzling Situation crosswords respectively realized by Sunday New York Times constructor Nancy Salomon and Cruciverb-L poster Manny Nosowsky. He sees to it that Sunday New York Times acrostics constructors and humorous crosswords constructor Cathy Millhauser, pseudonymed Hillary Mustache, respectively send Cora Acrostic and Misnomers.
Cora terms her first birthday bash with Bakerhaven acquaintances her best ever, thanks to Buddy and to Sherry, who, like Harvey, treasures acrostics and crosswords constructors.

One black sedan with a toy poodle and another black sedan without a canine passenger attracted Cora Felton's attention. Neither car appealed to Cora more than her red Toyota. The National Geographic magazine advertisement for the Dodge Brothers four-door sedan perhaps agrees with her because of the older dog, whose age well beyond puppy years perhaps acts against any dog shelter-goers adopting her/him, something Cora articulates about homeless, orphaned toy poodle Buddy: Infrogmation, Public Domain, via Wikimedia Commons

A Birthday Bash And a Puzzle to Die On Await Cora and an Outsider

Summary: A birthday bash by admiring Bakerhaven acquaintances And a Puzzle to Die On, the latter the sixth Puzzle Lady mystery, respectively await Cora and an outsider.

Cushman's Bake Shop advises customers of upcoming Halloween trick-or-treating, and perhaps of fresh pastries as treats, with a jack-o'-lantern window display. Sherry Carter acknowledges the scary night with a window jack-o'-lantern, perhaps a bit scarier than Mary Cushman's, perhaps less scary than anything Cora arranges; Man vyi, Public Domain, via Wikimedia Commons

A surprise birthday bash by admiring Bakerhaven acquaintances And a Puzzle to Die On, the latter also the title of the sixth Puzzle Lady mystery, respectively await Cora Felton and an outsider.
Her birthday became public knowledge once Cora, who bashes surprise parties even more than she belittles birthdays and bemoans wedding anniversaries, bloomed as beloved Puzzle Lady. Perhaps no one, apart Cora and her housemate and niece Sherry Carter, can calculate correctly the birth year that confirms which milestone birthday November 1st celebrates. Perhaps no one, apart herself and Sherry, deduces what Cora desires from what she downs at Country Kitchen and Wicker Basket restaurants and Cushman’s Bake Shop.
Cora enjoys Mary Cushman-brewed coffee that Bakerhaven acquaintances such as Chief Dale Harper and First Selectman Iris Cooper respectively esteem with Manhattan-made cranberry and unspecified muffins.

Cora perhaps feasts upon fresh slices from the pizza parlor on the first floor of the side-street building where Becky Baldwin functions as only Bakerhaven attorney.
Glamorous Becky goes for a tossed salad at Wicker Basket, where Cora gorges on a double bacon cheeseburger with fried onion rings, albeit with Diet Coke. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) for all Bakerhaven public schools or perhaps only the elementary school has Dale down for two tickets to the turkey raffle. Cushman’s Bake Shop includes a Halloween jack-o’-lantern in its window display without indicating to Bakerhaven acquaintances such as cruciverbalist Harvey Beerbaum whether it also is raffle-inspired.
Cora and Sherry perhaps jubilate Halloween and Thanksgiving without pumpkins, even as Sherry joins in Bakerhaven traditional jack-o’-lantern window displays, but with the latter’s traditional turkey.

Sherry’s iced tea, not her lemonade, and pot roast with herbs, sauteed onions and tomato sauce kindle reporter Aaron Grant’s thirst and Cora’s thirst and hunger.
Cora lightens Cushman-brewed coffee with loads of condiment-stable sugar and, albeit less than Harvey, lots of condiment-table milk for a late lunch with a cranberry scone. Nobody mentions what Police Officer Sam Brogan munches upon, apart manifesting chewing audibly and popping visually unspecified gum when rock-throwing trick-or-treaters make him miss meal times. Bakerhaven acquaintances, before nestling into newfangled, one-stop shopping mall niches, navigated Route 9 to the diner neighboring the woods-shaded wooden shack named the Kingman Grove icehouse.
The birthday bash offers a chocolate cake and a puzzle to die on, the former observable in what Cora orders when dining out, the latter not.

Cora pays for chocolate ice cream, not the vanilla preferred by other patrons of the truck-stop diner outside New Haven, over apple pie and Pyrex-prepared coffee.
Bakerhaven acquaintances queue into the public library for the 8- by 8-foot (2.44- by 2.44-meter) birthday cake atop two 4- by 8-foot (1.22- by 2.44-meter) tables. The 150-plus-cake dessert reflected Dale, daughter Clara, Dr. Nathan, Iris, Judge Hobbs, library assistant Jimmy Potter, Mary, realtor Judy Knauer, Sam and 140-plus others each cake-baking. Chocolate and vanilla frosting, as black-and-white icing, over the 150-plus-cakes surprise suggests a crossword puzzle with 22 and 23 Across 10-candled spaces and square 55 1-candled.
The birthday bash triggers a surprise cake for a 21-plus-year-old who never tells her true age and a puzzle to die on, thanks to 14 Down.

Apple pie with vanilla ice cream attracts all but chocoholic Cora Felton, who subsequently acknowledges vanilla icing as tastier than chocolate frosting, at a truck-stop diner outside New Haven; Monday, Sep. 8, 2014, 18:45, image of Apple Pie à la Mode: jeffreyw, CC BY 2.0 Generic, via Wikimedia Commons

Bakerhaven Maps Aim a Victim at a Birthday Bash And a Puzzle to Die On

Summary: Bakerhaven maps aim a victim at a birthday bash And a Puzzle to Die On and, amplified by Danbury and New Haven maps, a perpetrator at a second casualty.

>
Icehouses are less unassuming in the architecture imaged in 1846 for The Horticulturist and journal of rural art and rural taste than the icehouse appearing in the Parnell Hall-authored mystery novel And a Puzzle to Die On. The Bakerhaven-area icehouse appealed to youngsters avid for woods-shaded romancing after diner burgers and milkshakes. The Kingman Grove icehouse adjacent to the Route 9 diner attracted a perpetrator, whose aggression afforded him a life sentence, and a victim, whose death affected Bakerhaven acquaintances for 20 years; The Horticulturist and Journal of Rural Art and Rural Taste (February 1846), page 47: Internet Archive Book Images, Public Domain, via Flickr

Bakerhaven maps aim a victim at a birthday bash And a Puzzle to Die On and, amplified by Danbury and New Haven maps, a perpetrator, despite a witness, at a second casualty.
Main Street binds town businesses such as Cushman’s Bake Shop to such other respectively downtown and side-street buildings as the town hall and the Bakerhaven Gazette. It conveniences Sherry Carter commuting to nursery-school substitute-teaching two to three times monthly straight back to country living with aunt, housemate and Puzzle Lady Cora Felton. It deposits clients such as Darryl Daigue’s sister and private investigators such as Cora Felton at attorney Becky Baldwin’s one-room office above the side-street pizza parlor.
Main Street clients, customers and patrons emanate from town enterprises and government even as the Route 9 diner and Kingman Grove icehouse entertained burger-eating, milkshake-enticed students.

Side streets from Main Street function friendlier than 1.5 hours of back roads with 25- to 50-mile (40.23- to 80.47-kilometer) hourly speeds to Brandon State Penitentiary.
Wicker Basket restaurant, perhaps accessible from back-road gallivanting and to a country rental and from and to law offices, gets Cora and Becky as lunch guests. Town roads and streets head Cora from her home to the Bakerhaven police station on Main Street and from her home to the Danbury police station. A hill-bottom, right-turning curve impelling Bakerhaven-born, Danbury-residing 43-year-old Ricky Gleason’s blue Chevy into a huge oak inconveniences even Danbury police cars eastbound on Red Oak Road.
Cora perhaps journeys to Danbury medical examiner offices as she journeyed to the state penitentiary and to Danbury police, with MapQuest, without Danbury or Bakerhaven maps.

Perhaps Cora by now knows her way without MapQuest to Bakerhaven library from offices kept by Dr. Jenkins across from metered parking, down from a newsstand.
MapQuest lets Cora leave her home for Danbury city limits, where a right turn after three stoplights leads her to house number 8, then number 12. The two-story colonial mansion of Ida Blaine and her industrialist husband Quentin Hawes manifests behind a tall hedge trimmed to maintain privacy on a well-lighted street. It nestles, nicely distanced from its neighbors, amid a manicured, spacious lawn and behind a horseshoe drive whose surface niches a Ferrari near the front door.
Perhaps Bakerhaven maps, MapQuest and New Haven maps orient Cora to a truck-stop diner where Stacy Daigue, third-floor walk-up occupant down the road, obtains counter-girl hours.

Danbury-proficient Cora peregrinates to Burnside Private Investigators, 316 Main Street, Room 204,; the Valerie Thompkins residence, 325 Hickory Road; and the Peter Burnside suburban, third-floor walk-up.
Cora quests purebred toy poodle Buddy from Valerie’s neighbor, Cynthia Mayberry, and Best in Show video from Valerie’s quarters and thereby qualifies for Danbury jail overnight. She never researches where Gwendolyn Dryer resided in Boulder, Colorado, even as she relates brother Jason Dryer’s New York City residence to a disreputable, single-room-occupancy hotel. She never shares site specifics about Carlyle Kennel sheltering homeless, orphaned Buddy or the Danbury courthouse where Judge Trilling saw no probable cause for dog-napping sentences.
Cindy Tambourine’s brother Kenneth perhaps thinks first about terminating Darryl Daigue, then about Danbury and Bakerhaven maps and MapQuest for escape routes from Brandon State Penitentiary.

Cora Felton advances into digital, virtual areas thanks to housemate and niece Sherry Carter's personal computer. She amplifies her acquaintance with digital, virtual applications by availing herself of MapQest online web mapping services instead of the physical maps available during her pre-Bakerhaven years in the 20th century; Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, 13:37, image of web map app in smartphone: Santeri Viinamäki, CC BY SA 4.0 International, via Wikimedia Commons

The Kingman Grove icehouse adjacent to the Route 9 diner attracted a perpetrator, whose aggression afforded him a life sentence, and a victim, whose death affected Bakerhaven acquaintances for 20 years; The Horticulturist and Journal of Rural Art and Rural Taste (February 1846), page 47: Internet Archive Book Images, Public Domain, via Flickr @ https://www.flickr.com/photos/internetarchivebookimages/14595149747/; via Internet Archive @ https://archive.org/details/horticulturistjo2166alba/page/n47/mode/1up; No known copyright restrictions, via Wikimedia Commons @ https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Horticulturist_and_journal_of_rural_art_and_rural_taste_(1866)_(14595149747).jpg
