The snow goose (Anser caerulescens), a North American native waterfowl in the Anatidae family, comprises two subspecies. The lesser snow goose (Anser caerulescens caerulescens, Linnaeus, 1758) breeds in northern Alaska, northwestern Canada and northeastern Siberia and migrates to wintering ranges in the southern United States, northern Mexico and Japan. The greater snow goose (Anser caerulescens atlanticus, Kennard, 1927) breeds in northeastern Canada and northwestern Greenland and winters in the northeastern United States.

Snow geese belong among the native birds of North America even as continental and insular Canada, through continental United States, into continental Mexico boasts their populations. They count among the Anseriformes ("goose-shaped," Latin ānser fōrmēs) waterfowl-order, Anatidae ("duck-appearing/-resembling," Latin anas -idæ) ducks-, geese-, swan-family, Anserinae ("goose-pertaining," Latin ānser‎ -īnus) geese- and swan-subfamily members. They deport and display themselves as more swan-like than duck-like socially and trait-wise in teaming together in geese gaggles and swan bevies and transmitting their long-neckedness.

Snow geese endear themselves as blue morphs black-blue-brown-gray-backed; black-grin-patched; dark-bellied and eyed; pink-billed, footed, legged; white-headed and upper-necked even as white lines edge black-blue-gray wing feathers.

White morphs favor dark-eyed, grin-patched, long-, pink-billed, long-necked, pink-footed and legged, white-headed bodies even as they feature black-patched and tipped white wings, white backs, bellies, necks.

Respectively order-, family-, sufamily-membered Anseriformes ("goose-shaped," Latin anser -fōrmēs) waterfowl, Anatidae (duck-appearing/-resembling," anat -idæ) waterbirds, Anserinae ("goose-pertaining," anser -īnae) true geese and swans guard snow geese. Genus-species-subspecies-membered Anser caerulescens caerulescens and Anser caerulescens atlanticus (respectively "goose dark-bluing/-greening dark-bluing/-greening Atlantic," Latin anser caerulēscēns atlanticus) respectively house lesser[-sized] and greater[-sized], Linnaeus- and Kennard-taxonomized snow geese. Carl Linnaeus (Mon., May 23, 1707-Sat., Jan. 10, 1778) and Frederic Hedge Kennard (Sun., Nov. 19, 1865-Weds., Feb. 24, 1937) identified them in 1758 and 1927.

Northeast Siberia, north Alaska, northwest Canada versus northeast Canada, northwest Greenland keep breeding, even as southern United States, north Mexico versus Unitedstatesian northeast know non-breeding, geese.

Physical and sexual maturity logs 27- to 33-inch (69- to 83-centimeter), 3.75- to 6.5-pound (1.7- to 3-kilogram) bodies, 4.25- to 5.5-foot (1.3- to 1.7-meter) wingspans there. Snow geese migrate in 10,000-plus-member flocks to coastal-bay, freshwater, salt marshes, marsh-managed grain fields even as they manifest bunched- or V-formationed, direct, moderate-, wing-beaten, strong movements. They niche nesting-colony, open-grass or tall-vegetation tundra near freshwater lakes along hillock-, hummock-, knoll-, mound-scraped coastal Alaska and Canada or on ledge- and slope-scraped mountainous Greenland.

Audubon Birds and Nature Calendar observes snow geese February 2026 even as gray down-, white-feather-rimmed, aquatic/terrestrial grain-, leaf-, rootlet-, seed-, stem-, tuber-lined nests occur mid-yearly.

Two- to eight cream-white to white, elliptical to subelliptical, fine-grained, 3.1-inch (79-millimeter) by 2-inch (52-millimeter), smooth eggs present precocial/precocious hatchlings after 22- to 25-day mothers-to-be incubations.

Blue-morph snow-geese nestlings queue black bills with white nails; black feet and legs; brown-olive backs and heads duskier-downed than their underparts; yellow patches under their chins. White-morph nestlings reveal brown-yellow hindnecks, upperparts; dark-patched crowns, flanks, thighs; dark-streaked eyes; gold-green-yellow heads, underparts; gray bills with brown-yellow nails; gray-footed gray legs; sporadic-yellowing brown wings. .

Forty-two- to 50-day nestlings water-edge swim even as subsequent-sequenced fledglings, parental-supervisionedly, sojourn to and from central-plateaued Mexico; coastal-lowlanded British Columbia, Caribbean-mid-Atlantic United States; interior-valleyed North America.
