Alpha Centaurids Are Absent from Bishop Museum February 2026 Sky Map

Summary: Alpha Centaurids are absent from Bishop Museum February 2026 Sky Map, Honolulu, Oahu island, Hawaii state even as they sometimes alighten dark skies there.

"God talks to human beings through many vectors: through each other, through organized religion, through the great books of those religions, through wise people, through art and music and literature and poetry, but nowhere with such detail and grace and color and joy as through creation. When we destroy a species, when we destroy a special place, we're diminishing our capacity to sense the divine, understand who God is and what our own potential is." Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., April 19, 2023, Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts.

“And there’s many people out there who want us to move to the next planet already and I’m like, hang on, let’s not give up on this planet yet," William, Prince of Wales, July 31, 2023, Sorted Food food truck, London, England, United Kingdom.

The Alpha Centaurids qualify as February's meteor shower. The shower's name derives from an apparent radiant, or point of origin, near Rigil (Alpha Centauri) and Hadar (Beta Centauri), third and 11th brightest stars, respectively, in the night sky.
In 2025, the Alpha Centaurid meteor shower activated from Tuesday, Jan. 28, to Friday, Feb. 21, with peak around Saturday, Feb. 8, according to "February Highlights: α-Centaurid Meteor Shower" on 'Imiloa Astronomy Center's Sky Watch for Ianuali/January.
In 2025, the Alpha Centaurid meteor shower activated from Tuesday, Jan. 28, to Friday, Feb. 21, with peak around Saturday, Feb. 8, according to "February Highlights: α-Centaurid Meteor Shower" on 'Imiloa Astronomy Center's Sky Watch for Ianuali/January (https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5ae7c948d274cb3827a2db21/t/67ae53bca5e265639d130c60/1739477950722/20241230_FebruarySkyChart_JM.pdf). The shower's apparent constellatory radiant, Centaurus the Centaur constellation, started its rise above the southern (Hema) horizon after midnight. From 1:00 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. approximated as best viewing times for the Alpha Centaurids in 2025.
"Southern Cross in Mauna Loa Skies Credit & Copyright Barney Magrath," NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day 2002 April 25," image by then Kamuela, northern Hawai'i-based (now Santa Fe, north-central New Mexico-based) photographer Barney Magrath, captures (center; left of summit) Crux the Southern Cross constellation (Hawaiian: Hānaiakamalama) and (center left) Centaurus the Centaur constellation over Mauna Lea shield volcano, central Hawai'i ("the Big Island"). The Centaur's two brightest stars, yellowish-white triple star system Rigil (Alpha Centauri, α Centauri; α Cen, Alpha Cen; Hawaiian: Kamailehope) and bluish-white triple star system Hadar (Beta Centauri, β Centauri; Beta Cen, β Cen; Hawaiian: Kamailemua) are known in traditional Hawaiian celestial navigation as Na Kuhikuhi ("The Pointers"). They point west (right) toward bluish-white triple star system Mimosa (Beta Crucis, β Crucis; Beta Cru, β Cru), the eastern (left) arm and second brightest star in the Southern Cross constellation.:

Alpha Centaurids are absent from Bishop Museum February 2026 Sky Map, Honolulu, Oahu island, Hawaii ("bay-sheltered," hono lulu; "the-gathering-place," o'ahu; "breath-lifeforce-supreme," ha wai 'i) even as they sometimes alighten dark skies there.
The afore-broached meteor showers beautify the Hawaiian archipelago's ("grouped-islands," Italian arcipelago; "main-sea," Greek ἀρχι- πέλαγος) dark skies every January 28 through February 21, peaking February 8. That afore-considered peak commonly counts 3 to 6 meteors every hour even as less common can be such peak-time maximums as 20 to 30 fire balls. Alpha Centaurids ("the-alphabet-letter-A/-a," Greek ἄλφα; "aleph," Phoenician 𐤀) derive their name from their discovery perhaps as early as Feb. 2, 1938 and as recently as 1969.
Perhaps German astronomer Cuno Hoffmeister (Tues., Feb. 2, 1892-Tues., Jan. 2, 1968) encountered the afore-elucidated meteor showers in dark skies over South Africa Feb. 2, 1938.

Such a feat, furnished in Gary W. Kronk's "The Alpha and Beta Centaurids" for Meteor Showers Online Fri., Nov. 30, 2007, figures as a fantastic present.
That Wednesday guarded Dr. Hoffmeister's 46th birthday even as the afore-given source gauges 11-year, 1969-1980 sky-gazing generating the 1969 discovery by M. Buhagiar of Western Australia. Hoffmeister-harvested showers housed alpha (α) and delta (δ) radiants respectively at 210 and 57 degrees even as Buhagiar-honed showers hosted them at 214 and 64 degrees. Artificial Intelligence as AI Overview on Google searches identifies M. Buhagiar as Michael Buhagiar with Meteor News articles informing about Western Australia Meteor Society (WAMS) observations.
Alpha Centaurids journey below, low on, southern horizons of Bishop Museum February 2026 sky map even as the Hawaiian islands jubilate them during other-year dark skies.

Perhaps meteor showers of the Alpha Centaurids kindled radar detections from the Adelaide Observatory, The Heights School, Modbury Heights, Adelaide, South Australia Mon.-Mon., Feb. 10-17, 1969.
The Kronk article lists, as perhaps locating Alpha Centaurids, G. Gartell and W. G. Elford of the Department of Physics, University of Adelaide, Adelaide, South Australia. Physicists G. Gartrell and W. G. (William Graham) Elford monitored two meteors whose alpha (α) and delta (δ) radiant respectively manifested at 223 and 61 degrees. They noted as the nodal-passage date of the two meteors across the ecliptic plane of the Blue-Marble earthly orbit around our Sun Sat., Feb. 15, 1969.
Alpha Centaurids in years other than that of Bishop Museum February 2026 sky map offer fire-ball peak-occurrence meteors whose origin overlaps with the southern-sky constellation Centaurus.

Man-headed, man-torsoed, horse-bodied centaurs (Latin centaurus; Greek Κένταυρος ["I-goad/-wound bull," Greek κεντέω ταῦρος) prompt the constellation Centaurus even as that centaur presides with another dark-sky centaur.
The constellation Centaurus queues low on the Hawaiian archipelago's southern horizon even as it qualifies for no Hawaiian names apart stars Alpha Centauri and Beta Centauri. The Hawaiian language references Alpha Centauri as female twin Melemele ("blonde/yellow," mele mele) even as it refers to Beta Centauri as male twin Polapola ("Borabora," "maturing/recovering/safe-journeying/sprouting"). The other centaurial, centaurian, centauric constellation shines as southern-constellation Sagittarius ("archer," Latin Sagittārius ["arrow-relating," sagitta -ārius) even as its hook suggests Pimoe ("giant-ulua-fish [Caranx ignobilis]," Pīmoe).
Bishop Museum February 2026 sky map transmits no Alpha Centaurids even as it tends center-sky Jupiter without Saturday-transiting Mercury/Ukalialiii, Venus/Hokuloa, Mars/Hokuula, Saturn/Makulu, Uranus/Heleekela/Hereekela, Neptune/Nepekune February 28.

"Hawai'i's Sky Tonight Feb 2026," released as "Astronomy Resources" by Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum's J. Watumull Planetarium (Jhamandas Watumull Planetarium), comprises two pages, with a sky map and highlights for the month. The Star Map's depiction of the sky at 10:00 p.m. early in the month precludes reference to February's Alpha Centaurid meteor shower; the shower's apparent constellatory radiant, Centaurus the Centaur, rises after midnight.:
