Allyson Salisbury and 13 co-authors assess Expanding a Hurricane Wind Resistance Rating System for Tree Species Using Machine Learning in the same-named article for the Arboriculture & Urban Forestry March 2025 issue.

The 14 co-authors broach coastal communities and coastal-urban forests as hurricane-battered by such direct damage as broken branches; knocked-over trees; prolonged-inundation and salt-exposure stresses; snapped trunks. Characteristics such as buttress-growing capability, crown-stem ratio and wood density that comport with such environmental conditions as soil type and stand density conduce to storm-damage susceptibility. Everham and Brokaw detailed 1996-dated unstandardizedly-rated low-, medium-, high-damaged species even as Duryea et al. did 137 Florida-domiciled, 2004-2005 hurricane-season wind damage-resistant palm and tree species.

The 2010-elucidated study by Negrón-Juárez et al. encountered higher mortality in study plots with more lower wind-resistant species than in study plots with more wind-resistant species.

Duryea et al. featured few rate-process descriptions and no clear wind-resistance category descriptions even as machine-learning methods find large-, nonlinear-dataset patterns and furnish accurate forestry-application predictions.

The International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship (IBTrACS) gleaned for 42 Salisbury et al.-gauged cyclones time lapse between one tropical cyclone and another previously nearby. Studies keeping some, not other such as stem-failure damage types kindled severely imbalanced damage-data availability even as Salisbury et al. knows mortality, multiple-damage, stem-failure, root-failure types.

Salisbury et al. looked at study-model performance by respective sensitivity and specificity ratios of true positives to all positive, of true negatives to all negative, predictions. The Mean Gini Decrease metric makes wood density, maximum height, leaf per-unit-area mass importantest RF-model predictors even as percent damaged, latitude and longitude merit moderate importance. The afore-mentioned Mean Gini Decrease (MGD) metric notes as lesser-important RF-model predictors years since previous tropical cyclone, biome, leaf type, urban/rural and as least-important predictor angiosperm-gymnosperm.

Studying hurricane wind resistance rating, machine learning, tree species offers high-, medium-high, low-rated dataset-training/testing species respectively shorter maximum heights, greater wood density, greater leaf per-unit-area mass.

Wind-resistance ratings-prioritized mechanical property and crown trait wood density, intrinsic characteristics leaf per-unit-area mass and maximum height prompt new-planting, right-tree-right-place community-planting projects; recovery efforts; risk assessments.

Mitigation queues actions that quest pre-emptively decreasing, if not quitting, potential harm from natural disasters by such wind-resistant activities as proactive tree pruning and risk assessments. Low wind resistance-rated species reward tree-community planners with uprooted-tree gaps for younger-tree room and with functional diversity’s broad characteristic- or trait-ranging, health-realizing climate-change, disease-outbreak, pest-proliferation responses. The Salisbury et al. study sees its lowest accuracy in its low wind-resistance category even as RF predictive-model test data suggest “reasonably high accuracy overall” (Salisbury:138).

Beau Brodbeck Avails Creciendo Arboles Construction-amiable Tree Care

Summary: Dr. Beau Brodbeck avails Auburn University Extension- and University of Georgia-co-produced Creciendo Arboles series construction-amiable tree care.

Beau Brodbeck addresses Spanish language-speaking fluently, at least in part from his earliest years in Guatemala. This fourth session bears upon Preservación de árboles durante la construcción (from Spanish preservación de árboles durante la construcción, “preservation of trees during the construction” literally). Dr. Brodbeck, Dr. Jason S. Gordon of D.B. Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources and Dr. Rolando Orellana of the Center for Urban Agriculture connect. The University of Georgia domiciles the afore-designated urban-agriculture Center in Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia and the afore-designated forestry and natural-resources school in Athens consolidated city-county, Georgia.
