Summary: ‘Imiloa May 2025 Sky Watch accesses the Backbone and the Makalii Bailer star lines and navigational-star families in dark skies over Hilo, Hawaii.
"God talks to human beings through many vectors: through each other, through organized religion, through the great books of those religions, through wise people, through art and music and literature and poetry, but nowhere with such detail and grace and color and joy as through creation. When we destroy a species, when we destroy a special place, we're diminishing our capacity to sense the divine, understand who God is and what our own potential is." Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., April 19, 2023, Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts.
“And there’s many people out there who want us to move to the next planet already and I’m like, hang on, let’s not give up on this planet yet," William, Prince of Wales, July 31, 2023, Sorted Food food truck, London, England, United Kingdom.

Hanaiakamala (Southern Cross, from Hawaiian hānai a ka malama, “cared-for by the moon”) acts as appellation for an ancient-voyaging, Hawaiian-wayfaring tradition star and for the summer palace of Emma Kalanikaumakaʻamano Kaleleonālani Naʻea Rooke (Jan. 2, 1836-Apr 25, 1885), queen consort (Jun 19, 1856-Nov. 30, 1863) of Kamehameha IV (Feb. 9, 1834-Nov. 30, 1863), King (Jan. 11, 1855-Nov. 30, 1863) of the Kingdom of Hawaii (1795-Jul 17, 1893); Saturday, Sep. 18, 2019, 15:30:41, image of "The front facade of the summer home of Queen Emma and her husband, King Kamehameha IV and their young son Prince Albert Edward Kauikeaouli, from 1857 to 1885. The home is also known by its Hawaiian name of 'Hanaiakamalama'"; now a historic landmark, museum and tourist site, Queen Emma's Summer Home was added 8/7/1972 to the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America, reference number 72000420: Monimoo (mkbacon), CC BY SA 4.0 International, via Wikimedia Commons |
‘Imiloa May 2025 Sky Watch accesses the Backbone and the Makalii Bailer star lines and navigational-star families in dark skies over Hilo (“thread”), Hawaii (“breath life-force supreme”) County and Island, Hawaii state.
Backbone and Bailer (Kaiwikuamoo [ka iwi kua moo, “the bone back (of-the-lizard”]; Kekaomakalii [ke kā o Makali’i, “the canoe-bailer of Makalii”]) star lines beautify night hours. They congregate at 8:00 p.m. Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (4:00 Chamorro, 7:00 Samoa, 10:00 Alaska, 11:00 Pacific, midnight Mountain, 1:00 a.m. Central, 2:00 Eastern, 3:00 Atlantic Time). The Kaiwikuamoo navigational-star-family star line domiciles, from akau (‘Ākau, “north”) to hema (“[west-ensconced sun] left[-ward], south”), somewhat toward koolau (Ko’olau, “north[east], windward”) and hikina (“east”) horizons.
The Backbone, literally Anglicized as the lizard’s backbone, enjoys as its northernmost star Hokupaa (North Star, Polaris [Greek πόλος; Latin polus[-]āris, “pole-pertaining”]; Hawaiian hōkūpa’a, “star immovable”).
The second star, Nahiku (Big Dipper, from Hawaiian nā hiku, “the seven”) fits southward, almost halfway toward sky center, its last star fingering koolau northeasterly horizonward.
The third star, Hokulea (from Greek ἄρκτος[-]οὖρος, “bear[-]guard” via Greek Ἀρκτοῦρος, Latin Arctūrus; Hawaiian hōkū lea, “star clear/glad”) glimmers, glitters, glows somewhat southeastward, somewhat eastern-horizoned hikina-ward. The fourth star, Hikianalia (Spica, from Latin spīca, “ear[-of-grain], head/spike”; Hawaiian hiki, “star”), heads slightly southwestward, somewhat easterly of sky center, somewhat westerly of eastern-horizoned hikina. The fifth star, Mee (Corvus, from Latin corvus, “crow, raven”; Hawaiian me’e, “chant, heroic, prominent”) is diagonally center-skyward and somewhat southwestward-inclined, albeit straight-lined, north of Hanaiakamalama.
‘Imiloa May 2025 Sky Watch jubilates Backbone and Bailer star lines even as its south junctures Hanaiakamalama (Hawaiian hānai a ka malama, “cared-for by the moon”).
Hanaiakamalama, Anglicized as Southern Cross, keepsakes the hema south horizon even as the last May-month, southernmost star known as Bailer star-line star keeps westwardly and southwestwardly.
Kekaomakali, Anglicized the canoe-bailer of Makalii (Pleiades, from Greek πλέω, “to sail”? πελειάς, “dove”? via Πλειάδες, Latin Plēiadēs; Hawaiian maka[-]li’i, “little[-]eyes/stars”), logs as northernmost star Hokulei. Hokulei (Auriga, from Latin aurīga, “charioteer”; Hawaiian hōkū lei, “star wreath”) manifests not far from the hoolua (from Hawaiian Ho’olua, “[rain-bearing strong] north wind”) northwest horizon. The second and the third third stars, Nanamua and Nanahope, nestle as the constellation Namahoe (Gemini, from Greek Δίδυμοι, Latin geminī; Hawaiian nā māhoe, “the twins”).
‘Imiloa May 2025 Sky Watch observes Backbone and Bailer star lines even as the two navigational-star families offer dark-sky Hawaii four stars and five stars, respectively.
Nanamua and Nanahope (Castor, Greek κάστον, “wood” via κάστωρ, “beaver,” Latin castor; Hawaiian nānā[-]mua, “star[-]first”; πολύς[-]δεῦκος, “much[-]sweets” via Πολῠδεύκης, Latin Pollūx; Hawaiian nānā[-]hope, “star[-]last”) perch northeastwardly.
The constellation Mu (Canis Minor, Latin canis minor, “dog lesser”; Hawaiian mū) quarters Puana (Procyon, from Greek πρό[-]κύων, “before[-]dog” via Προκύων, Latin Procyōn; Hawaiian puana, “blossom”). The last Bailer-constellation star, Aa (Sirius, from Greek σείριος, “scorcher/scorching” via Σείριος, Latin Sīrius; Hawaiian ‘a’ā, “bright-burning”) resides komohana-ward (from Hawaiian Komo, “west[erly-sun] enters [sea]”), kona-ward. The star Aa signals the Bailer-constellation end-star even as the same star, Sirius, signifies the starting star for Canis Major (from Latin canis maior, “dog greater”).
‘Imiloa May 2025 Sky Watch treks Backbone and Bailer star lines Hanaiakamalama-ward and, tucked ultra-komohana, Kaheiheionakeiki-ward (ka hei-hei o nā keiki, “the cat’s-cradle of the child”).

Traditional Hawaiians perhaps associate the constellation Corvus (from Latin corvus, “crow, raven”) as much with their Hawaiian crow ('alalā, Corvus hawaiiensis) as with the same constellation attributed in ancient-Hawaiian/Polynesian voyaging and wayfaring traditions with the Backbone star-line fifth star, Mee (from Hawaiian me’e, “chant, heroic, prominent”); Corvus Hawaiiensis, under synonym "Corvus Tropicus, F.W. Frohawk, del. et lith.; West, Newman imp.," illustration by English zoological artist and lepidopterist Frederick William Frohawk (July 16, 1861-Dec. 10, 1946), in Scott B. Wilson, assisted by A.H.
