Summary: Orfeo ed Euridice is the June 8, 2024, Met Opera Saturday broadcast, airing as 27th of the 2023-2024 season's 27 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts.

Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice is the June 8, 2024, Met Opera Saturday matinee broadcast, airing at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time as the 27th of the 2023-2024 season's lineup of 27 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts.
Orfeo ed Euridice by German classical composer Christoph von Gluck (July 2, 1714-Nov. 15, 1787) receives eight performances in the 2023-2024 season. The first through fifth performances were held Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday matinee, May 19, at 3:00 p.m.; Thursday, May 23, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, May 25, at 8:00 p.m.; and Thursday, May 30, at 7:30 p.m. The sixth through eighth, closing performances are scheduled for Monday, June 3, at 8:00 p.m.; Wednesday, June 5, at 8:00 p.m.; and closing day, Saturday matinee, June 8, at 1:00 p.m.
Christian Curnyn conducts all eight performances of Orfeo ed Euridice. The British conductor, harpsichordist and baroque music specialist's conductorship of the 2023-2024 season's first performance of Orfeo ed Euridice on Thursday, May 16, marked his Met Opera debut.
Ying Fang appears in all eight performances as Euridice, happily fated in Gluck's opera in contrast to Greek mythology's unhappily ended Euridice. The Chinese operatic soprano had made her Met Opera debut Sunday, Sep. 28, 2013, as the Kazan Cathedral’s female voice and as Madame Podtochina’s daughter in the opera company’s seventh performance of The Nose by Russian composer and pianist Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich (Sep. 25, 1906-Aug. 9, 1975).
Anthony Roth Costanzo appears in all eight performances as Orfeo, whose violation of a promise not to look at Euridice during their ascent from the underworld occasions Euridice's second death but whose suicidal intention invokes Amore's revival of Euridice and a happy life in the upper world for the couple. The American countertenor had made his Met Opera debut Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, as Unulfo in the opera house’s 21st performance of Rodelinda by German, later British, Baroque composer George Handel (Feb. 23, 1685-April 14, 1759).
Elena Villalón appears in all eight performances in the trouser role of Amore, who allows Orfeo's and Euridice's successful return to the upper world by nullifying Euridice's second death, which had been caused by Orfeo's violation of Amore's no-looking, no-explaining requirements during his retrieval of Euridice from the underworld. The Cuban-American soprano's appearance in the opera's first 2023-2024 season performance on Thursday, May 16, marked her Met Opera debut.
The 2023-2024 season's presentation of Orfeo ed Euridice marks the fourth revival of the new production that debuted in the 2006-2007 season under the directorship and choreography of Mark Morris (born Aug. 29, 1956). The American director, choreographer and dancer had made his Met Opera debut, along with his new production of Orfeo ed Euridice, on Wednesday, May 2, 2007, in the opera company's 83rd performance of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice.
Morris's production team for Orfeo ed Euridice comprises Allen Moyer, set designer; Isaac Mizrahi, costume designer; and James F. Ingalls, lighting designer. American set designer Allen Moyer and American fashion Isaac Mizrahi had made their Met Opera debuts in the new production Wednesday, May 2, 2007, alongside their director. American lighting designer James F. Ingalls had made his Met Opera debut Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, in the opera company's 45th performance of Wozzeck by Austrian composer Alban Berg (Feb. 9, 1885-Dec. 24, 1935).
The June 8 Saturday matinee closes Met Opera's 2023-2024 season. The fourth revival of Morris's staging of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice numbers as the 27th and last of the season's Saturday matinee radio broadcasts and also as the last of the 2023-2024 season's operatic performances.
