Puccini's Madama Butterfly is the May 11, 2024, Met Opera Saturday matinee broadcast, airing at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time as the 24th of the 2023-2024 season's lineup of 27 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts.
Madama Butterfly by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924) receives 16 performances in the 2023-2024 season. The first through 14th performances were distributed over two winter months and three spring months.
January received six winter performances, and February offered one winter performance. The first through sixth performances took place Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024, at 7:00 p.m.; Sunday, Jan. 14, at 3:00 p.m.; Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 20, at 1:00 p.m.; Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, Jan. 27, at 8:30 p.m. The seventh of the season's 16 Madama Butterfly performances was held Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 8:00 p.m.
Spring performances were offered in March, April and May. March's four performances, numbering as the eighth through 11th performances, took place Saturday matinee, March 2, at 1:00 p.m.; Wednesday, March 6, at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, March 9, at 8:00 p.m.; and Thursday, March 14, at 7:30 p.m. Two April performances, numbering as the 12th through 13th performances, were given on Friday, April 26, at 8:00 p.m., and Tuesday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. The first of May's three performances, numbering as the 14th performance, took place Saturday, May 4, at 8:00 p.m.
The last two of May's three performances are scheduled for Tuesday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, May 11, at 1:00 p.m. They equate to the 15th and 16th, closing performances of Madama Butterfly in the 2023-2024 season.
Xian Zhang conducts 15 of the season's 16 Madama Butterfly performances. Her conductorship covers he first and third through 16th, closing performances, including the May 11 Saturday matinee radio broadcast. The Chinese maestro's conductorship of the 2023-2024 season's first Butterfly performance, on Thursday, Jan. 11, marked her Met Opera debut.
Xian Zhang shares the conductorship with Derrick Inouye, who conducts the second performance, Sunday, Jan. 14. The Canadian-born conductor made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, in the opera house’s fifth performance of Benvenuto Cellini by French Romantic composer Hector Berlioz (Dec. 11, 1803-March 8, 1869).

Asmik Grigorian shares the role with Aleksandra Kurzak and Eleonora Buratto. Polish operatic soprano Aleksandra Kurzak appeared as Cio-Cio-San in the first six performances. She had made her Met Opera debut Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, as Olympia in the opera company’s 233rd performance of Les Contes d’Hoffmann by German-born French composer Jacques Offenbach (June 20, 1819-Oct. 5, 1880). Italian soprano Eleonora Buratto sang Cio-Cio-San in the seventh through 11th performances. She had made her Met Opera debut Friday, March 4, 2016, as Norina in the opera company’s 136th performance of Don Pasquale by 19th-century Italian bel canto opera composer Gaetano Donizetti (Nov. 29, 1797-April 8, 1848).
Jonathan Tetelman appears as Pinkerton, the U.S. Navy lieutenant who breaks Cio-Cio-San's heart, in the 12th through 16th, closing performances, including the May 11 Saturday matinee radio broadcast. The American operatic tenor had made his Met Opera debut Tuesday, March 26, 2024, as Ruggero iappearance in the 2023-2024 season's first performance of Puccini's La Rondine.
Jonathan Tetelman shares the role with Matthew Polenzani, who sings Pinkerton in the first 11 performances. The American lyric tenor had made his Met Opera debut Friday, Dec. 19, 1997, as Khrushchov in the opera company’s 251st performance of Boris Godunov by Russian composer Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (March 21, 1839-March 28, 1881).
Elizabeth DeShong appears as Suzuki, Cio-Cio-San's maid, in the first, second, fourth and sixth through 16th, closing performances, including the May 11 Saturday matinee radio broadcast. The American operatic soprano had made her Met Opera debut Friday, March 21, 2008, in the opera company’s 83rd performance of Ernani by Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901).
Elizabeth DeShong shares the role with Eve Gigliotti, who sings Suzuki in the third and fifth performances. The American mezzo-soprano had made her Met Opera debut Wednesday, April 28, 2010, as Mercédès in the opera company's 958th performance of Carmen by French Romantic Era composer Georges Bizet (Oct. 25, 1838-June 3, 1875).
Lucas Meachem appears as Sharpless in the 12th through 16th, closing performances, including the May 11 Saturday matinee radio broadcast. The American baritone had made his Met Opera debut Monday, Dec. 10, 2007, as General Rayevsky in the opera company’s 11th performance of War and Peace by Soviet composer, conductor and pianist Sergei Prokofiev (April 23, 1891-March 5, 1953).
Lucas Meachem shares the role with Davide Luciano, who sings Sharpless in the first 11 performances. The Italian baritone had made his Met Opera debut Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018, as Belcore in the opera company's 293rd performance of Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore.
Met Opera's 2021-2022 season presentation of Madama Butterfly marks the ninth revival of the new Met Opera production that Anthony Minghella (Jan. 6, 1954-March 18, 2008) debuted Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, in the opera company's 799th Butterfly performance. The Italian film, opera and television director and producer had made his Met Opera debut with the new production.
Anthony Minghella's wife, Hong Kongese choreographer and director Carolyn Choa, choreographed Madama Butterfly. Since Minghella's death, his widow has assumed the production's directorship. She had made her Met Opera debut as associate director and choreographer alongside her husband.
Madama Butterfly's production team comprises Michael Levine, set designer; Han Feng, costume designer; Peter Mumford, lighting designer; and Blind Summit Theatre, puppeteers. Canadian set designer Michael Levine had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, March 13, 1997, in the opera company's 104th performance of Eugene Onegin by Russian late Romantic era composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (May 7, 1840-Nov. 6, 1893). Met Opera debuts Monday, Sep. 25, 2006, alongside director Minghella and choreographer Choa were made by production team members Nanjing, China-born costume designer Han Feng; London-born international lighting designer Peter Mumford; and London-based, internationally touring puppet-based theatre producer Blind Summit Theatre.
Puts's The Hours broadcasts May 18 as the 24th of the 2023-2024 season's 27 Saturday matinee broadcasts. The first revival of English stage director Phelim McDermott's 2016-2017 season-debuting new production airs at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
