Met Opera's Oct. 27, 2018, broadcast of Puccini's La Fanciulla del West airs May 25, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time as the 25th of the 2023-2024 season's 27 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts.
La Fanciulla del West by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924) received seven performances in Met Opera's 2018-2019 season. All seven performances were held in October. The Saturday matinee, Oct. 27, 2018, numbered as the seventh, closing Fanciulla performance in the 2023-2024 season.
Marco Armiliato conducted all seven performances in the 2018-2019 season. The Genoa-born Italian conductor had made his Met Opera debut Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, in the opera company’s 1,048th performance of Puccini’s La Bohème.
Eva-Maria Westbroek appeared in all seven performances in the title role of Polka Saloon owner Minnie, who falls in love with outlaw Dick Johnson. The Dutch soprano had made her Met Opera debut Friday, April 22, 2011, as Sieglinde in the opera company’s 525th performance of Die Walküre by 19th-century German composer and librettist Wilhelm Richard Wagner (May 22, 1813-Feb. 13, 1883).
Jonas Kaufmann appeared in the last four performances, including the Oct. 27, Saturday matinee, as Dick Johnson, the outlaw whom Minnie loves, saves from hanging and joins in a new start elsewhere. The German operatic tenor’s Met Opera debut happened Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, as Alfredo in the opera company’s 904th performance of La Traviata by 19th-century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901).
Željko Lučić appeared in all seven performances as mining camp sheriff Jack Rance, who loves Minnie, reluctantly agrees to pardon Dick Johnson from hanging and allows Minnie and Dick to seek a fresh start elsewhere. The Serbian operatic baritone had made his Met Opera debut Tuesday, Sep. 26, 2006, as Barnaba in the opera company’s 275th performance of La Gioconda by 19th century Italian opera composer Amilcare Ponchielli (Aug. 31, 1834-Jan. 16, 1886).
Carlo Bosi sang Polka Saloon bartender Nick in all seven performances. The Italian tenor had made his Met Opera debut Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, as Dr. Cajus in the opera company’s 176th performance of Verdi’s Falstaff.
Michael Todd Simpson appeared in all seven performances as Sonora, a miner who loves Minnie and unties Dick's hands after the outlaw's reprieval from hanging. The American operatic baritone had made his Met Opera debut Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2009, as Hermann/Schlémil in the opera company’s 241st performance of Les Contes d’Hoffmann by German-born French composer Jacques Offenbach (June 20, 1819-Oct. 5, 1880).
Matthew Rose sings outlaw-pursuing Wells Fargo agent Ashby in all seven performances. The English operatic bass had made his Met Opera debut Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, as Colline in the opera company’s 1,240th performance of Puccini’s La Bohème.
Oren Gradus sang traveling minstrel Jake Wallace in all seven performances. The American bass had made his Met Opera debut Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, as the Guardian of Ores in Elektra by German late Romantic and early modern composer Richard Strauss (June 11, 1864-Sep. 8, 1949).
The 2018-2019 season's presentation of La Fanciulla del West marked the third revival of the new production by Giancarlo del Monaco (born Dec. 27, 1943) that debuted Thursday, Oct. 10, 1991, in the opera company's 76th Fanciulla performance. The debut of the new production also had marked the Italian stage director's Met Opera debut.
Giancarlo del Monaco's production team for La Fanciulla del West comprised Michael Scott as costume and set designer and Gil Wechsler as lighting director. Michael Scott had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Oct. 10, 1991, alongside his director. American theatrical lighting designer Gil Wechsler had made his Met Opera debut Tuesday, Jan. 18, 1977, in the opera company's 74th performance of Le Prophète by German Jewish opera composer Giacomo Meyerbeer (Sep. 5, 1791-May 2, 1864).
Massenet's Cinderella broadcasts June 1 at 1:00 p.m. as the 26th of the 2023-2024 season's lineup of 27 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts. The June 1 Saturday radio matinee replays Emmanuel Villaume's conductorship of Met Opera's Cinderella performance on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 2022.
Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice broadcasts June 8 at 1:00 p.m. as the 27th and last of the 2023-2024 season's 27 Saturday radio matinees. The season's performances of Orfeo ed Euridice comprise the fourth revival of the new 2006-2007 production debuted Wednesday, May 2, 2007, by American director, choreographer and dancer Mark Morris.
