Met Opera's Cinderella matinee broadcast from New Year's Day 2022 airs June 1, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time as the 26th of the 2023-2024 seasons lineup of 27 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts.
The Metropolitan Opera's 2021-2022 season featured Cinderella, an abridged English language version of French language fairytale opera Cendrillon by French Romantic Era composer Jules Massenet (May 12, 1842-Aug. 13, 1912). Dramaturg, librettist, translator and yoga and mindfulness practitioner and teacher Kelley Rourke created the one act, 90-minute adaptation.
Cinderella/Cendrillon received eight performances in the 2021-2022 season. The opera's first six performances took place in December 2021 (Friday, Dec. 17; Sunday matinee, Dec. 19; Wednesday, Dec. 22; Friday matinee, Dec. 24; Tuesday matinee, Dec. 28; and Thursday matinee, Dec. 30. The seventh and eighth, closing performances were held in January 2022 (Saturday matinee, Jan. 1; Monday evening, Jan. 3).
Emmanuel Villaume conducted all eight performances. The French conductor had made his Met Opera debut Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, in the opera company’s 789th performance of Madama Butterfly by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924).
Isabel Leonard appeared in the title role in the first two and fourth through eighth, closing performances of Cinderella/Cendrillon. The American operatic mezzo-soprano had made her Met Opera debut Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2007, as Stéphano in the opera company’s 312th performance of Roméo et Juliette by 19th-century French composer Charles-François Gounod (June 17, 1818-Oct. 18, 1893).
Emily D'Angelo sang the trouser role of Prince Charming in the first, seventh and eighth, closing performances. The Canadian-Italian mezzo-soprano had made her Met Opera debut Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018, as Pantalis in the opera company's 68th performance of Mefistofele by Italian composer and librettist Arrigo Boito (Feb. 24, 1842-June 10, 1918).
Stephanie Blythe sang Cinderella's stepmother, Madame de la Haltière, in the first through fifth, seventh and eighth, closing performances. The American mezzo-soprano had made her Met Opera debut Wednesday, April 28, 2010, as Mercédès in the opera company's 958th performance of Carmen by French Romantic Era composer Georges Bizet (Oct. 25, 1838-June 3, 1875).
Laurent Naouri appeared as Cinderella's father, Pandolfe, in all eight performances. The French bass-baritone had made his MetOpera debut Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, as Sharpless in the opera company’s 838th performance of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.
Jessica Pratt sang the Fairy Godmother in the first two and fourth through eighth, closing performances. The English-born Australian operatic soprano had made her Met Opera debut Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2016, as the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, in the opera company's 426th performance of Die Zauberflöte.
The 2021-2022 season's performances of Cinderella/Cendrillon marked the first revival of the new production by Laurent Pelly (born Jan. 14, 1962) that had debuted Thursday, April 12, 2018, in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of the original French libretto of Massenet's Cendrillon. The French opera and theatre director had made his Met Opera debut Monday, April 21, 2008, as director and costume designer, in the opera company's 89th performance of La Fille du Régiment by Italian opera composer Gaetano Donizetti (Nov. 29, 1797-April 8, 1848).
In addition to directing the production, Laurent Pelly also served as costume designer. His production team comprises Barbara de Limburg, set designer; Duane Schuler, lighting designer; and Laura Scozzi, choreographer. Belgian set designer Barbara de Limburg had made her Met Opera debut in Cendrillon's Metropolitan Opera premiere Thursday, April 12, 2018. American theatrical lighting designer Duane Schuler had made his Met Opera debut Monday, March 21, 1994, in the opera company's 268th performance of Otello by 19th-century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901). France-based, Italian choreographer Laura Scozzi's Met Opera debut Monday, April 21, 2008, alongside Laurent Pelly, in his new production of Donizetti's La Fille du Régiment.
The 2021-2022 season's presentation of Cinderella/Cendrillon premiered the English-language version of Pelly's production. Kelley Rourke's Cinderella libretto numbers as the second of Met Opera's abridged, English language opera adaptations for family audiences. The Metropolitan Opera had debuted Julie Taymor's The Magic Flute in the 2006-2007 as the first of the opera company's abridged, English-language, family-friendly opera adaptations.
Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice airs June 8 at 1:00 p.m. as the 27th of the 2023-2024 season's lineup of 27 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts. The June 8 Saturday radio matinee broadcasts the eighth, closing performance of the 2023-2024 season's eight performances of Orfeo ed Euridice. The 2023-2024 season's presentation of Orfeo ed Euridice marks the fourth revival of the new production debuted by American director, choreographer and dancer Mark Morris in the 2006-2007 season.
