The American verismo opera's Metropolitan Opera premiere took place Tuesday, Sep. 26, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time. The second through ninth performances were held Saturday matinee, Sep. 30, at 1:00 p.m.; Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 6, at 8:00 p.m.; Sunday matinee, Oct. 8, at 3:00 p.m.; Thursday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday matinee, Oct. 15, at 3:00 p.m.; Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 7:00 p.m.; and Saturday matinee, Oct. 21, at 1:00 p.m.
The Jan. 20, 2024, Saturday matinee radio broadcast plays the matinee performance from Oct. 21. The replayed performance numbered as the opera's ninth, closing performance in its Met Opera premiere season.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Met Opera's Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director, conducted the first through fourth and seventh through ninth, closing performances. The French Canadian conductor and pianist had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, in the opera company's 946th performance of Carmen by French Romantic Era composer Georges Bizet (Oct. 25, 1838-June 3, 1875).
Yannick Nézet-Séguin shared the conductorship with Steven Osgood, who conducted the fifth and sixth performances. The American conductor's appearance in the fifth performance, Sunday, Oct. 8, marked his Met Opera debut. Steven Osgood has been an assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera since 2006, according to his website (http://srosgood.com/).
Joyce DiDonato appeared as Sister Helen Prejean in all nine performances. The American lyric-coloratura mezzo-soprano had made her Met Opera debut Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, in the trouser role of Cherubino in the opera company’s 419th performance of Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro.

The Metropolitan Opera premiere of Dead Man Walking Tuesday, Sep. 26, 2023, added the role of Sister Helen Prejean to American lyric-coloratura mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato's Met Opera portfolio; two days after its Met Opera premiere, the production performed, with 14 inmates in the chorus, for an audience of 150 inmates at Sing Sing Maximum Security Correctional Facility in Ossining, Westchester County, southeastern New York, in fulfilment of a promise that Joyce had made during her eight years of "singing" and "working with" Sing Sing's prison population: Joyce DiDonato, via Facebook Oct. 18, 2023

Ryan McKinny sang the title role of convicted murderer Joseph De Rocher in all nine performances. The American lyric bass-baritone had made his Met Opera debut Friday, May 4, 2012, as Mr. Ratcliffe in the opera house's 45th performance of Billy Budd by English composer, conductor and pianist by Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten (Nov. 22, 1913-Dec. 4, 1976).
Susan Graham appeared as Mrs. Patrick De Rocher, mother of the "Dead Man Walking." The American mezzo-soprano had made her Met Opera debut Thursday, Sep. 26, 1991, as the Second Lady in the opera company's 271st performance of Die Zauberflöte by Classical Era composer Wolfgang Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756-Dec. 5, 1791). Susan Graham had created the role of Sister Helen Prejean in the San Francisco Opera's world premiere of "Dead Man Walking," held Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at the War Memorial Opera House. Her appearances as Mrs. Patrick De Rocher in the opera's Metropolitan Opera premiere revisit the role that she first added to her opera résumé in the Washington National Opera's (WNO) premiere Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, in the Opera House at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC.
Latonia Moore appeared as Sister Rose, Sister Helen's friend and colleague in the Hope House mission, in all nine performances. The American soprano had made her Met Opera debut Saturday, March 3, 2012, in the title role in the opera company's 1,122nd performance of Aida by 19th-century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901).
Ivo van Hove (born Oct. 28, 1958) directed the Metropolitan Opera premiere of Heggie's Dead Man Walking. The Belgian theater director had made his Met Opera debut Friday, May 5, 2023, in the opera company's 577th performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni.
Ivo van Hove's production team comprised Jan Versweyveld, set and lighting designer; An D'Huys, costume designer; Christopher Ash, projection designer; and Tom Gibbons, sound designer. Belgian theatre set designer Jan Versweyveld, Belgian costumer An D'Huys and American projection designer Christopher Ash shared their Met Opera debuts Friday, May 5, 2023, with their director in his new production's debut, in the opera company's 577th performance of Don Giovanni. English sound designer Tom Gibbons had made his Met Opera debut in Dead Man Walking's Metropolitan Opera premiere Tuesday, Sep. 26, 2023.
French Romantic Era composer Georges Bizet's Carmen airs Jan. 27 as the 2023-2024 season's eighth Saturday matinee radio broadcast. The new production's Saturday matinee broadcast airs at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Joyce DiDonato. "Two nights after we opened The Metropolitan Opera season with Dead Man Walking, we had a different kind of opening altogether: at Sing Sing Maximum Security Correctional Facility. 14 incarcerated men made up the chorus, and we performed for 150 men of the general population. For 8 years I've been singing for them and working with them, and right from the start I promised them I would find a way to bring this opera, and Sister Helen herself, to them. Thanks to the extraordinary work of the Musical Connections Program of Carnegie Hall and my amazing colleagues from the cast, this became a reality. It was perhaps the most extraordinary musical and human experience of my life. I'm glad ABC Nightline was there to capture a bit of the atmosphere." Facebook. Oct. 18, 2023.
