Outside, anglicized from Úti, appends Party of Two, short story that first appeared in Guilty Parties: The Fourth CWA Anthology from Severn House Publishers of London, England, United Kingdom, Aug. 1, 2014.

The two-character story from Crime Writers’ Association (CWA) 2014 by crime novelist, crime-fiction critic and employment-law solicitor consultant (Kenneth) Martin Edwards bares one proper noun, Iceland. Seventy-one-year olds, chums as five- to 11-year-olds, comprise main characters, one of whom mentally castigates his absentee father and dead-drunk mother and cherishes his maternal grandmother. They dwell within a few miles of each other, one in the parental domicile and the other in the grandparental dwelling, somewhere in coastal southeast Iceland.

One elderly male envisions effectuating an evening meal with expensive wine and old-fashioned coffee for another old man as erasing 60 years of evading each other.

One friendless 71-year-old furnishes his former friend with a fine fare of fresh-fished, home-cooked salmon and pancakes fashioned from scratch, cooked to savoriness, sugar-topped and rolled.

His guest gobbles neither salmon (lax locally, Salmo salar [“salmon trout”] scientifically) nor pancakes (pönnukökur) and guzzles no hvítvín (“white wine”) gotten from the nearest town. The hospitable host heads 30-some miles (48.29-some kilometers) to town even as he never has anything alcoholic and nothing hints of his ex-friend harboring drinking habits. An invitation is issued and the invitee itinerates to an intimate cottage on mountain slopes with intimidating rocks above coastal southeast Iceland’s semi-calm, semi-quiet, semi-treacherous sea.

Perhaps themes journeying into and out of, toward and away from friendship join the short story Party of Two and the thriller Outside, anglicized from Úti.

The six-page story keeps nothing verbal apart one question about dessert pancakes, another about grandmotherly pancakes, one statement about main-course plates, another about grandson-made, second-best pancakes.

The dinner host lifts salmon-laden and pancake-loaded plates, wine bottle and glasses from kitchen to dining table to kitchen and coffee from kitchen to living room. Kaffi (coffee), made strong old-fashioned like 60 years ago or modern espresso (“pressed-out [coffee]”) or latte (“[steamed-]milk [espresso]”) may merit one more before meal guest leave-taking. The dinner host normally nourishes himself on microwaveable frozen pizza and sauced chicken from the nearest town, whose nice restaurant nets numerous tourists between glacier-ogling times.

One odious occurrence perhaps orients Party of Two more toward one 20-some-year-old offense observable in Myrknætti (Blackout) and Andkör (Whiteout) than toward Outside, anglicized from Úti.

Ragnar Jónasson produced in 2014 the short stories Death of a Sunflower for Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and A Moment by the Sea for Orenda Books.

A Letter to Santa and A Postcard From Iceland qualified for the Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine 2015 and the Orenda Books’ CWA 2017 Mystery Tour anthologies. Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and Penguin & Macmillan respectively released Don’t Panic in 2019 and, with The Mist, The Silence of the Falling Snow in 2020. Goldsboro Books and The Mysterious Bookshop sold The Daughter and A Christmas Puzzle in 2020, year before co-authors Ragnar Jónasson and Víkingur Ólafsson storied The Concert.
