Betting, Puzzling, Suing Are Why You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled

Summary: Betting in New York, puzzling from New Jersey, suing in Connecticut are why You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled, Parnell Hall’s 8th Puzzle Lady mystery.

Veronica Austin Martindale, monikered Ronnie by Wilbur's Antiques' namesake owner-operator, accepted eight rattan wicker-back chairs arranged June 6, 1952, by an admirer to the Austin family residence. Betting in New York, puzzling from New Jersey, suing in Connecticut are why You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled, Parnell Hall’s (Oct. 31, 1934-Dec. 15, 2020) 8th Puzzle Lady series mystery.
Mimi Dillinger braves husband Chuck’s fax machine for Ned Browning, as Bakerhaven Gazette reporter, to build a human interest story around bent-fender bills and crossword-puzzle apologies. Sherry Carter copied Benny Southstreet’s crossword My Bad, without contacting the latter, for aunt and puzzle-constructing partner Cora Felton to convey for Mimi’s personal use only. Benny, desperate to delete his $40 debt to Aqueduct Racetrack bookie Frankie “The Shirt” Finklestein, delivers to Astroturf Publishing another, puzzle for which he demands $50.00.
Editor Wally Embers, upon whose desk Benny espies the Bakerhaven Gazette article, extends only $40.00, which encourages the latter to exchange betting and puzzling for suing.

Attorney Becky Baldwin flounders, with one client fighting speeding points on her driver’s license, until Benny fingers Cora and Granville Grains for plagiarism and false advertising.
A 100-yard (91.44-meter) restraining order grieves Sherry’s ex-husband, Dennis Pride, who guides Benny to puzzle constructor Harvey Beerbaum and Wilbur’s Antiques namesake guarding rattan wicker-back chairs. It hackles him, as second wife Brenda Wallenstein’s first husband and as Tune Freaks frontman, so that he huddles with Becky and Benny and with Chuck. Pride interventions incur Benny invading Chuck’s study for $5,000, identified to Dave as counterfeit, by the two-story Colonial’s kitchen window and Harvey’s dining room for chairs.
Addictions and jealousy jeopardize Dennis journeying judiciously through his remarriage as much as betting, puzzling, suing jeopardize Benny in You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled.

Dennis keeps Police Chief Dale Harper and Officers Sam Brogan and Dan Finley kinetic with Benny knowing about Chuck, Harvey and Wilbur kindling the Southstreet killing.
Cora never lets Dennis in on legendary diamonds, about which the latter laments Aaron linking officially with Sherry with a diamond ring, lost in rattan chairs. Dennis mentions Chuck, who maintains a study line separate from the family phone for Mimi and daughter Darlene, motoring to the pay phone on Elm Street. Cora never notifies him of Paul Fishman, at Bakerhaven mall’s Photomart booth, noticing Sherry as nice-looking, or of Reverend Kimble negotiating Carter/Grant engagement and wedding needs.
Betting, puzzling, suing and taking rattan chairs orient Benny toward operating in the red and outside the law in You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled.

Cora pocketing $5.00 against Danbury Deputy Sheriff Claiborne and $20.00 bridge winnings and police processing Beerbaum and Dillinger break-ins never prevent Benny performing other than self-destructively.
A broken wagon wheel sign, a car backed into a mall light pole and a nail in a rear tire qualify as crime-solving clues for Cora. Cora likewise regards Darlene racked with strep (streptococcal pharyngitis) and chambermaid Marge O’Connell, assistant manager Ralph and Haney owner-operators ignoring Dumpster rubbish from Four Seasons Motel. His favorite elm (Ulmus Americana) shades Buddy even as Cora sorts Daniel Farnsworth Cane Company bookkeeper (1935-1962) Philip Crickstein and the Martindale estate selling rattan chairs.
Cora tells what transgressions beyond Benny’s betting, puzzling, suing thwart malpractice associate Chuck tapping Hendricks and Sloane partnership in You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled.

Bakerhaven Television Station Channel 8 on-camera reporter Rex Reed accepts tips from Police Officer Dan Finley. Cora atypically alerts him to a Bakerhaven Town Hall meeting about absconded, burgled and errant rattan wicker-back chairs. It amazes her that two sets of four such chairs appeal to an antiques dealer, a cultured divorcée and a puzzle-loving gambler. Rattan wicker-back chairs are not things that she and perhaps Police Chief Dale Harper accumulate over the present objects of their respective admiration, cranberry scones and blueberry-ginger muffins.

Starbucks Caramel Adds Acuity in You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled

Summary: Starbucks caramel Frappuccino adds acuity in You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled, 8th mystery in the Puzzle Lady series authored by Parnell Hall.

Cora acknowledges Starbucks caramel as a bit more awesome than caramel-, cherry-, coconut-centered chocolates in Whitman's Sampler. She acquires a caramel frappuccino with whipped cream in the 20-ounce (0.59-liter) size from the Bakerhaven mall-addressed Starbucks. She appreciates all caramel appearances in all Starbucks drinks, be they advertised as caramel Frappuccino with whipped cream or as caramel flan frappuccino; Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, image of Starbucks caramel flan frappuccino: theimpusivebuy, CC BY SA 2.0 Generic, via Wikimedia Commons

Starbucks caramel Frappuccino adds 20 ounces of acuity in You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled, 8th mystery in the Puzzle Lady series authored by Parnell Hall (Oct. 31, 1934-Dec. 15, 2020).
Number puzzle lady Cora Felton bespatters her beloved smock with beloved essential food groups: butter, guacamole, hot fudge, ice cream, maple syrup, marshmallows and onion dip. She no longer considers among compulsory comestibles alcoholic concoctions, whose consumption, as scotch, attorney Chuck Dillinger chooses to combat a compromised career and a crying child. Her business partner and niece Sherry Carter dislikes alcoholic drinks even as the latter’s boyfriend, Bakerhaven Gazette reporter Aaron Grant drinks dinner wine during their dates.
Sherry exempts herself from blue cheese and dinner wine, which Aaron enjoys with the salad bar, before they embark on their unelucidated dinner at Country Kitchen.

Sherry furnishes Aaron and Cora with fetching, filling, non-fattening food even as, in You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled, she focuses upon automatic-drip coffeemaker coffee.
Cora garnishes her coffee with generous milk and sugar at Bakerhaven diner with Police Chief Dale Harper, Mary Cushman’s Bake Shop and the Carter/Felton kitchen table. Dale, unlike Cora, handles coffee as horrible as at Bakerhaven diner, with harsh lighting and hideous tabletops, when he has station coffee from the department urn. Cora inveighs against hot and iced teas, which impress her no more than ground oak (Quercus) leaves, even as she indulges, albeit inimically, in the former.
Cora jubilates with Cushman coffee and latte, Sherry’s perhaps gourmet-like coffee, Starbucks caramel Frappuccino and Whitman’s Sampler chocolates in You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled.

Cruciverbalist (from Latin crux, “cross” and verbum, “word”) Harvey Beerbaum and the namesake owner-operator of Wilbur’s Antiques know how to key Cora into albeit temporary tea-drinking.
Leaving the Wilbur’s Antiques Barn still living and lacking two bullets in her head leads Cora not to lament hot tea, which she likes to loathe. Previously, Harvey makes orange-flavored tea from his Heinz 57 collection, some of whose teas he mentions as chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), Earl Grey, Lemon Zinger and Sleepytime. Cora notes no coffee when Wilbur navigates Bakerhaven morning, noon and evening traffic for Cushman muffins and scones, Wicker Basket lunches and Country Kitchen restaurant dinners.
Cappuccino with apricot scone or skim latte with cranberry scone offers Cora less acuity than Starbucks caramel Frappuccino in You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled.

Perhaps coffee with blueberry muffin or double skim mocha latte (from Latin lac, via Italian latte, “milk”) with chocolate croissant propel Chuck’s wife Mimi and Harvey.
One pepper and sausage pizza slice, perhaps with garlic and onions, qualifies as the only food that Benny Southstreet, attorney Becky Baldwin’s first plagiarism-suit plaintiff, quests. Becky and Cora respectively relish chopped salad and pastrami rye as takeout perhaps from Wicker Basket, not from Bakerhaven pizza parlor below the former’s law office. Cora sees caramel-, not cherry- or coconut-centered Whitman’s Sampler chocolates and tuna fish on dog kibble as respective special treats for herself and toy poodle Buddy Felton.
Starbucks caramel Frappuccino (from French frappé, “milkshake” and Italian cappuccino, “brown-red [Capuchin monk hoodlet]”) nevertheless triggers crime-solving thinking in You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled.

You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled Alerts Us About Bakerhaven Trains

Summary: You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled, Parnell Hall’s 8th Puzzle Lady series mystery, alerts us about such big-city, small-town access as Bakerhaven trains.

Benny Southstreet accesses New York from his rental in New Jersey by the Hoboken terminal of the PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) transit line. He arrives in New York City to accumulate on-the-spot cash, with neither advances nor royalties, for his crossword puzzles, from which he assures his gambling addiction through Aqueduct bookie Frankie "The Shirt" Finklestein; Saturday, June 5, 2004, 18:12, image of Hoboken Terminal: LHOON from Mechelen, Belgium, CC BY SA 2.0 Generic, via Wikimedia Commons

You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled, 8th mystery in the Puzzle Lady series by Parnell Hall (Oct. 31 1934-Dec. 15, 2020), alerts us about such big-city, small-town access as Bakerhaven trains.
His puzzle, My Bad, in 100 Crossword Puzzles for All Occasions brings Benny Southstreet from New York City to Bakerhaven by leased, owned or rented car. Dennis Pride, Sherry Carter’s first husband and then Brenda Wallenstein’s first husband, commutes by personal car from New York City to the former’s Bakerhaven rental residence. Cora Felton and niece Sherry do not lock their doors so Dennis ducks into their hall closet during the former’s dialogue with Police Chief Dale Harper.
Dennis enters Becky Baldwin’s law office atop Bakerhaven pizza parlor during her appointment with Benny about the latter’s plagiarism suit against Granville Grains-sponsored puzzle lady Cora.

Aqueduct bookie Frankie “The Shirt” Finklestein and Astroturf Publishing editor Wally Embers never figure among New Yorkers whom Dennis finds as Benny’s respective friends and foes.
Benny perhaps gutting a kitchen window and grabbing $5,000 from a study desktop guides Dennis to Chuck Dillinger, Hendricks and Sloane malpractice attorney on Madison Avenue. Benny houses himself in a rented room in Hoboken, New Jersey, and, to harass Cora and Wilbur’s Antiques namesake, Four Seasons Motel Unit 12 outside Bakerhaven. He invades cruciverbalist (from Latin crux, “cross” and verbum, “word”) Harvey Beerbaum’s dining room for rattan wicker-back chairs like those tarped in the Wilbur’s Antiques barn.
Benny journeys by PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) transit to New York and perhaps by Ford Taurus to Bakerhaven in You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled.

Perhaps Benny knows, like Police Chief Dale Harper and Cora, Bakerhaven diner and, like Wilbur, Cushman’s Bake Shop breakfasts, Wicker Basket lunches and Country Kitchen dinners.
Perhaps Benny likes Bakerhaven mall, like Ned Browning’s Bakerhaven Gazette colleague Aaron Grant and Cora’s niece Sherry Carter, for its cinema and, like Wilbur, for Starbucks. Perhaps he misses Canine Cuts, whose personnel manicure Cora’s toy poodle Buddy, but mulls Photomart manned by Paul Fishman, who maintains a Bakerhaven or Bakerhaven-area apartment. Perhaps he notes, like Wilbur, Ace Hardware near Four Seasons Motel and, like Chuck and Dennis, the Elm Street convenience store and gas station pay phone.
Bakerhaven trains in You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled offer Mimi the Dillinger car for Bakerhaven pharmacy medicines and far-side garage bender and tire work.

Perhaps Benny, unlike Cora and perhaps unlike Mimi, never parks proximitous to Bakerhaven library across the street from Bakerhaven Police Station and to Bakerhaven town hall.
Benny never queues up at the Sunoco service station just past Wilbur’s Antiques at the same time as Cora and perhaps not at any other time. He perhaps never realizes that Cora received $5.00 from Deputy Sheriff Claiborne for Danbury pistol range marksmanship or that puzzle constructor Harvey Beerbaum resides in Bakerhaven. Benny first sees Cora and Wilbur long after she sublet her 890 Park Avenue apartment and he shipped Daniel Farnsworth Cane Company chairs to Mount Vernon.
Big-city, small-town transport teams private and public transit even as You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled trumpets cars in-town and Bakerhaven trains and cars out-of-town.

Perhaps Benny Southstreet added car rental to his credit cards. Chambermaid Marge O'Connell agonizes over whether its leaser, owner or renter angled a Ford Taurus into the parking space allotted to Unit 12, where Benny abides, or the adjacent Unit 13 at Four Seasons Motel; Tuesday, April 24, 2007, 14:56, image of 2004-2006 Ford Taurus: IFCAR, Public Domain, via Wikimedia Commons
