Can Melvin Crabtree characterize correctly Johnny Dawson, soldier concluding three Afghanistan tours to care for 10-, 10-plus-years younger 16-year-old sister Peggy after their parents’ car crash? Does he describe Judy Douglas Knauer of Knauer Realty delegating house-showing duties since last year to Johnny, who drives an undescribed car with license plates 64392?

What encourages Peggy to experience free-based cocaine with construction crewmen Jason Tripp and Fred Winkler, who respectively expire on a mall parking space and Main Street?

Bakerhaven Police Chief Dale Harper and an unidentified clerk at Bakerhaven mall’s Stop & Shop respectively find Fred at 5:30 a.m. and Jason at 3:00 a.m.

Who gored and grounded hunting knives into Fred and Jason, one knife gotten by Melvin from Bakerhaven mall, the other by Johnny from under his pillow? Who heads Dale, whose daughter Clara, between Johnny’s and Peggy’s ages, already has graduated from a Massachusetts college, toward a two-time knife-wielding perpetrator younger than Melvin? Who impels him to initiate Police Officers Sam Brogan investigating the pickup truck that Johnny intends for Peggy’s Bakerhaven itineraries and Dan Finley interrogating the latter?

An arrest warrant for conspiring to conceal crime, fabricating evidence and obstructing justice and police investigations jeopardizes a bad book more than a good dress size.

What kindles medical examiner Dr. Barney Nathan and the crime lab, but for Manny, not keeping Dale knowledgeable about death times and murder weapon-conserved blood types?

Judge Hobbs lists bail bond at $50,000 for murder suspect Melvin, always late paying Cora alimony, and at $10,000 for crime-concealing, evidence-fabricating, investigation- and justice-impeding Cora. Perhaps Melvin organizes into his bad book observing attorney Becky Baldwin outfitted in a good dress size over which Cora obsesses, and the county prosecutor’s wife.

First Selectman Iris Cooper perceives Melvin, whom perhaps nobody patrols pursuing Mrs. Firth while Henry peregrinates to a legal convention in Cleveland, perturbing Cora into jaywalking.

Melvin successfully quests exclusive interviews with Aaron Grant as Bakerhaven Gazette reporter and as Cora’s nephew-in-law and with Rick Reed as Bakerhaven Television Channel 8 newsman. Rick realizes an exclusive interview with Melvin’s literary agent, Jacob Wasserman, outside Bakerhaven Police Station and perhaps renders Confessions of a Trophy Husband a Bakerhaven bestseller. Felton confessions, apart regarding niece Sherry Carter Grant signing the bail bond and grand-niece Jennifer sharing ice cream with toy poodle Buddy, perhaps similarize Crabtree confessions.

Cora talking about fitting non-fattily into a good dress size and Jennifer play-dating Ricky Stebbins perhaps thwarts the bad book about which The Purloined Puzzle talks.

A thinner Cora adores coffees, Diet and scones much more than alcohol in The Purloined Puzzle, 19th mystery in the Puzzle Lady series authored by Parnell Hall (Oct. 31, 1934-Dec. 15, 2020).

Her niece, Sherry Carter Grant, bakes from scratch, but Cora buys beloved cranberry scones brought to Mary Cushman’s Bake Shop from the Manhattan-based Silver Moon Bakery. Cora sometimes controls her craving for cranberry scones, such as when Mary confides that Cora choosing one cranberry can be changed to clenching the last two. She devours Granville Grains Cereal, which she dislikes, only during television ads, which she does as crossword puzzle lady of a daily column with national syndication.

Sherry enjoys coffee black even as she energizes her Aunt Cora and her husband, Aaron Grant, with caffeinated, sometimes decaffeinated coffees for their over-milking and over-sugaring.

Sherry perhaps fits whatever facilitates her furnishing latte (from Latin lac, via Italian latte, “milk”) from scratch into the Carter/Grant addition and the Felton prefab kitchen.

Sixteen-year-old Peggy Dawson, who gravitates toward such metabolism generators as Bakerhaven motel unit-guarded cocaine and Country Kitchen cheeseburgers, gets her coffee black in Cora’s Sherry-run kitchen. Sherry perhaps hones from scratch cappuccino (from Italian cappuccino, “brown-red [Capuchin monk hoodlet]”) and Frappuccino (from French frappé, “milkshake” and Italian cappuccino) coffees hailed by Cora. Insatiable inclinations impel Cora to indulge in caffe (from Arabic قَهْوَة, via Italian caffè, “coffee”) latte brewed on-site and unidentified scones three times in one day.

Journeying judiciously to Bakerhaven eateries in The Purloined Puzzle jeopardizes only once Cora judging alcohol unfriendlier than coffees, Diet and scones to a smaller dress size.

Cora keeps to her regimen of Diet Coke even as Country Kitchen bar and restaurant kindles ex-husband Melvin Crabtree keeping to his beer and scotch regimens.

Attorney Becky Baldwin leaps from scotch on the rocks to double scotch at Country Kitchen, where Cora lists evidence and witnesses labeling Melvin as murder suspect. Cora never mentions wedding-night champagne among her most missed alcohol, which instead manifests as a fifth each of Knob Creek bourbon whiskey, rum, scotch and tequila. Nostalgiacizing nowadays caramel and vanilla nuances of nice rum nudges Cora out of the house, into Bakerhaven Starbucks, for venti (from Italian venti, “20[-ounce]”) caramel frappuccino.

No alcohol in The Purloined Puzzle occasions any relapse by Cora, who orients herself to obtaining small-sized dresses and offering herself coffees, Diet and scones often.

Cora, who performs no exercises to present petiter poundage, praises grand-niece Jennifer Carter Grant pitching balled-up cotton socks across the laundry room, into the front-loading dryer.

Jennifer, like Cora once, queues up among world lovers of ice cream and, like the latter’s toy poodle Buddy, quests Häagen-Dazs chocolate chocolate chip ice cream. She relishes McDonald’s burger dinner with first-grade classmate and first playdate Ricky Stebbins even as Buddy resigns himself to receiving bologna rendered into many bite-sized pieces. The five-member household savors Chinese restaurant-takeout orange beef and sesame chicken and Sherry’s fennel, risotto (from Greek ὄρυζα, via Italian risotto, “short-grained rice”) and swordfish.

Perhaps Buddy and Jennifer, like Cora, whom scones tempt more than alcohol in The Purloined Puzzle, term burgers, ice cream and tacos as essential food groups..

The Purloined Puzzle, 18th mystery in the 20 Puzzle Lady mysteries authored by Parnell Hall (Oct. 31, 1934-Dec. 15, 2020), affects Bakerhaven motel and Colson Road reputations and perhaps rentability and resale.

Bakerhaven motel benefits Bakerhaven economy and residents because it boards various passersby and visitor overflow that family business or national, state or town holidays bring in. Crewmen carrying out unspecified construction near the Starbucks configured somewhere within Bakerhaven mall claim consecutive units through Unit 11 even as Melvin Crabtree clinches Unit 12. Driving distances to Bakerhaven mall and Country Kitchen do not daunt Bakerhaven motel dwellers, whose units perhaps display a coffee corner and a diminutive refrigerator.
