Becky appears thinner, younger than all but two, thin middle-aged Stephanie and voluptuously young Brittany, in Puzzled Indemnity, 16th mystery of 20 novels in the Puzzle Lady series authored by Parnell Hall.

Jennifer Carter Grant, Aaron Grant’s and Sherry Carter Grant’s daughter and Cora Felton’s grand-niece, and the latter’s toy poodle Buddy beautify winter whiteness with snow circles. Sherry calls attorney Becky Baldwin and Police Chief Dale Harper whenever Cora, who carries no cell phone, commandeers the Carter/Felton red Toyota and cannot be contacted. Clara, Dale and Ellen Harper’s only child, distances herself from Bakerhavenite deeds, as she devotes herself to a boyfriend and a teacher’s assistantship at Boston University.

Cora, Dale and Bakerhaven policeman Dan Finley examine Ed James Wine and Spirits after a blue LL Bean-overcoated, Halloween-hooded, Iron Man-masked robber extracts $500 to $600.

Cora, as Baldwin law office’s paid private investigator and Bakerhaven police station’s unpaid private consultant, and Harvey Beerbaum respectively furnish crime-related crossword and numbered puzzle solutions.

Hank Wells gets into his Chevy Impala at 7:55 a.m. at his Bakerhaven rental and gets back at 8:15 p.m. from selling New Yorkers insurance policies. Bakerhaven has no private detectives so his wife Brittany hires Becky and Cora to hinder Hank harming her for life insurance heralding $1 to $2 million. Hank introduces Brittany to the 1944-released film classic Double Indemnity about life insurance on a husband’s natural death increased for his wife by his accidental death.

Cora judges Brittany clueless and useless as a tree stump and more voluptuous, youthful-acting and youthful-appearing than thinner Becky, the latter two years younger than Sherry.

Cora perhaps knows oak (Quercus) from pine (Pinus) trees, but she knows nothing about tree stumps, whose root systems kindle soil food webs with energizing exudates.

Madeline Greer lets Cora’s ex-husband, Melvin Crabtree, as Martin Kendrick of Kendrick and Blake probating will beneficiaries three months after Gerald Waldman died, into Apt. 3F. Insurance salesman Randy Klein, then Madeline mention no mistress, then Wendy Ross as Hank’s oral hygienist to Madeline masquerading as bar-hopper, then as Village Voice writer. His mother and firefighter Kevin Greaves respectively name Billy the Bug Wilson arson-free 10 years and town arsonist imprisoned three, four times for burning Bakerhaven houses.

A thinner, younger Bakerhavenite observes someone occupying Brittany’s Chevy Impala, not Hank’s Impala license-plated JRV 715, not Judy Douglas Knauer realty or Fred Burns hardware-store cars.

Premeditated murder charges prevail against Brittany unless County Prosecutor Henry Firth persuades Judge Hobbs not to pursue court proceedings publicized by Channel 8 newsman Rick Reed.

Medical examiner Dr. Barney Nathan quibbles with Cora after the former’s successful reconciliation quests with wife Judy and the latter’s successful romantic quests with Sergeant Crowley. Becky as attorney and Cora as private investigator receive respective checks from Brittany, as Hank’s life insurance beneficiary, for one-third of $2 million and for $10,000. Crowley separated from wife Susan for Stephanie, college acquaintance, three-year spouse of a public school kindergarten teacher, Bleecker Street tapestry shop owner-operator and Greenwich Village resident.

Crowley told Susan about thinner, younger Stephanie, Stephanie about older, plumper Cora and Cora, who thereby treats herself to Cushman Bake Shop’s California buns, about nobody.

Pepperoni pizza appeals to Cora perhaps every time she ascends to attorney Becky Baldwin's law office above the Bakerhaven pizza parlor. It assists her for nine days while she attempts to stop smoking cigarettes. California buns appease Cora more than cigarettes in Puzzled Indemnity, 16th of 20 mysteries in the Puzzle Lady series by author Parnell Hall, and perhaps less than caffeinated, decaffeinated or latte coffee.

Braving nine days without cigarettes boosts the abdominal bulges on Cora Felton, already 10 to 20 pounds beyond best weights for women her age and height. The private investigator compensated by Baldwin law office, not compensated by Bakerhaven police station, consumes niece Sherry Carter Grant’s hot coffee from caffeinated and decaffeinated brands. She downs cold and hot drinks and foods also destined by Sherry for Bakerhaven Gazette reporter and husband Aaron Grant and two-year-old daughter Jennifer Carter Grant.

Cora’s toy poodle Buddy eats dog kibble and puppy biscuits of unelucidated brands even as Jennifer expects her homebound three-meal mate to enjoy her sweet potatoes.

Cora never favors tea furnished by Sherry or fellow sudoku puzzle-solver Harvey Beerbaum even as she finds it in her favor from Brittany Wells and Stephanie.

Gallivanting around big cities and small towns grounds Cora in Mary Cushman’s Bake Shop and Starbucks coffee and scones and in Brittany’s and Stephanie’s home-brewed coffees. Mary Cushman has a folding table holding a coffee urn, cream and sugar condiments and coffee cups and lids for the six-man Bakerhaven volunteer fire department. Hot coffee inundated or not with cold cream impels barber and volunteer firefighter Kevin Greaves back to first-ever Bakerhaven arson, which involves a car-bombed Chevy Impala.

California buns join the daily Manhattan-made fare at Mary Cushman’s Bake Shop and therefore her daily diet whenever Cora journeys away from the Carter/Felton/Grant country joint.

Pepperoni scents from, and smoking alley behind, the pizza parlor below Baldwin law office kindle Cora not keeping the 10th day cigarettes-free after nine non-smoking days.

Over-milked, over-sugared hot coffee logically leads Cora to Cushman latte (from Latin lac, via Italian latte, “milk”) over the Country Kitchen bar’s scotch on the rocks. Cora maneuvers attorney Becky Baldwin into munching on a California bun with Cushman-made latte, Brittany into Cushman scone-munching and Stephanie into Cushman scone-munching with Cushman-made latte. Sergeant Crowley needs coffee black, not sweetened by sugar or sugar substitutes, and without simultaneously nibbling croissants sugar-dipped, rolled bun-like, and baked into honey-glazed California buns.

Crowley, like Becky, and Hank Wells’ office co-worker, Randy Klein, like Cora once, order Irish whiskey and scotch and, unlike all, perhaps never order California buns.

Cora and Crowley ponder Indian cuisine versus Thai cuisine as ordered-in food for delivery to the latter’s leased, owned, rented or sublet apartment in Greenwich Village.

Perhaps chive pancakes, coconut-crusted shrimp, curry puffs and pad thai delivered to Crowley quarters quicken regular-speed tailing by Cora, Crowley, Perkins and Stephanie of murder suspects. Nobody reveals accompanying drinks even though Stephanie previously relished diner coffee with Hank’s insurance client, Madeline Greer; unspecified alcohol with Randy; and Crowley coffee with Cora. Crowley and Stephanie slipping away for Aaron’s exclusive scoop steers Cora away from a cranberry muffin and from a latte like the one she already sipped.

Cora takes a California bun and tells Bakerhaven Police Chief Dale Harper to try one but not to take more than three California buns a day.

Cora appreciates Thai cuisine so much that she attempts an order twice, once with Sergeant Crowley and a second time with Crowley, Crowley's girlfriend Stephanie and Crowley's New York Police Department Officer Perkins. A cell-phone call by attorney Becky Baldwin brings transplanted Manhattanite Cora Felton from Bakerhaven boondocks to Baldwin law offices, with its side-street parking, within 10 minutes. Her red Toyota conducts Cora from Baldwin law offices to Bakerhaven police station, with downtown, out-front parking on Main Street, and Ed James Wine and Spirits. Building architects designed the Tyson’s Road liquor store like its own mini-mall with an out-front parking lot whose daunting spaces dwarf wildest Black Friday shopping dreams.

Cora encounters a Muni-Metered parking space enabling exact surveillance of the office building, where an insurance agency employs Hank Wells, at Sixth Avenue and 50th Street.

One Muni-Meter for each block furnishes paid parking if its payee finds legal, meter-free, meter maid-fineable space and fits the Muni-Meter receipt onto the car windshield.

Every two blocks give drugstore-going Manhattanites Duane Reade, a gander two blocks south of Sixth at 50th and a cab drive to Upper West Side-garaged parking. Cab drivers head up Sixth to 59th Street, left on Columbus Circle, uptown on Broadway, to 84th Street, which has its parking garage eastward, halfway down. Another day Hank instructs his cab driver from Sixth at 50th Street to Broadway, West End Avenue and Riverside Drive intersections, to 624 West 83rd Street.

Parking alerts about car bombs and parking spaces judged illegal by meter maids and towing companies respectively jeopardize Cora journeying without New York and Bakerhaven maps.

Brittany and Hank Wells, known as Mr. and Mrs. not even one year, since June (2014?), keep Chevy Impala twins in their unassuming two-story’s front driveway.

Hank and Brittany leave 574 Oak Street, which lodges one pine (Pinus), at 7:55 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. for New York and Cushman’s Bake Shop, respectively. She navigates her red Toyota to Oak Street, Cushman’s Bake Shop, wherever developers niched their shopping mall, with its Target, Baldwin offices and Bakerhaven police station.

Any parking alerts occurring on Bakerhaven maps originate from two explosions of a car bomb in a vehicle occupying meter-free, meter maid-free parking outside Bakerhaven Library.

The first, perhaps only car bomb perturbs such downtowners as hardware store businessman Fred Burns, realtor Judy Douglas Knauer and barber and volunteer firefighter Kevin Greaves.

Town government-quartered emergency medical services (EMS), not the six-volunteer fire department, quest Billy the Bug Wilson at his atypical, yellow-painted, not typical, white-painted 415 Fairview residence. Cora reaches, by West Side Highway to 18th Street or by 19th Street, Sergeant Crowley’s West Village apartment and Crowley girlfriend Stephanie’s Bleecker Street tapestry store. Two New York Police Department cars speed to G.W. Bridge, Route Four exit, Seventeen South and a New Jersey motel between Burger King and a mini-mall.

Perhaps Bakerhaven maps transmit parking alerts since Puzzled Indemnity less than Bakerhavenites traditionalize downtown Congregational church services for the dead and courthouse trials against two transgressors.

The one, perhaps the only ever car bombing in all Bakerhaven annihilates one of two Chevy Impala cars parked across from Bakerhaven police station and in front of Bakerhaven Library. The Chevy Impala ironically appears during that time period in its ninth generation as a New York Police Department (NYPD) car of choice.
