French-American artist, explorer, naturalist and ornithologist John James Audubon (born Jean-Jacques Rabin; April 26, 1785-Jan. 27, 1851) backgrounded his description of the Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) with his observations of the circumpolarly-distributed seabird's faking fearful situations. "I have many times seen the Common Tern suddenly fly up and come close over a man or a dog, without the least apparent provocation, indeed when far distant from its nest, and then pass and repass repeatedly within a few yards, emitting a plaintive cry, as if its eggs or young were in the immediate vicinity. Carl Linnaeus (Mon., May 23, 1707-Sat., Jan. 10, 1778) called common terns Sterna hirundo in his Latin-language, 1758-published, tenth-edition System Naturae ("system nature's, Latin systēma nātūræ). Such Pacific-Ocean Unitedstatesian islands in the Hawaiian archipelago ("breath-lifeforce-supreme," Hawaiian ha wai 'i; "main-sea," Italian arcipelago, Greek ἀρχι- πέλαγος) and Pacific-rim Asia domicile overwintering common terns.

Common terns elect as overwintering habitats peninsular Florida through the Caribbean-coastal states Alabama through Texas even as Caribbean- and Pacific-coastal Mexico and Central America encounter them.

Common terns act according to bigger- and smaller-group arrangements even as extended families and friends affirm astute socializing as breeding colonies and as foraging, migrating and wintering flocks.
