Lapis on Magnum’s Six Paintings, One Frame crime action drama television series episode Oct. 15, 2018, acts like silver urns on The Night Has Eyes April 24, 2020, re-aired Aug. 7, 2020.

First-season fourth-episode director Antonio Negret and writer Ashley Gable and second-season 17th-episode director David Straiton and writer Ashley Charbonnet bury booty respectively behind, beneath something beautiful. The canvas configuring a Victorian lady captivates private investigator Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez) with its lapis lazuli-colored clothing convoking his cherished Detroit Tigers professional baseball team. It disguises a painted portrait dramatically done by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (July 15, 1606-Oct. 4, 1669), Leiden-born draughtsman, painter and printmaker of the Dutch Republic.

The female portrait by St. Petersburg-born artist Konstantin Andreyevich Somov (Nov. 30, 1869-May 6, 1939) esteems St. Petersburg-born artist Ekaterina Martynova (Jan. 9, 1869-Oct. 17, 1904).

The portrait perhaps foreshadows the artist’s best female friend forever’s death within four to seven years of its finishing sometime between 1897 and 1900 features lapis.

The 40.5-inch- (103-centimeter-) tall and wide Lady in Blue Portrait of Yelizaveta Martynova (Дама в голубом Портрет Е.М. Мартыновой) guards sprinkle-free, streak-free indigo, midnight, royal blue. Carat, clarity, color and cut help or hinder highest honors to the rock harboring sodalite group membership among silicate (from Latin silex, “flint, pebble, stone”) minerals. Lapis lazuli includes sodalite group co-members blue, gray, green, pink, red, yellow haüyne; blue, brown, gray, green, white nosean; and blue, green, red, white, yellow sodalite.

Azure, green, purple, violet blue lapis lazuli (from Latin lapis, “stone” and lazulī, “of sky,” from Arabic لَازُوَرْد, from Persian لاجورد, “green stone”) jumbles other minerals.

The impure variety of the sodalite-group mineral lazurite keeps black-blue, blue-white afghanite; black, blue, brown, green, white, yellow amphibole; or black, brown, green, purple, violet-brown augite.

The metamorphic (from Greek μεταμόρφωσις, “transformation”), multi-mineral rock likewise lodges black-, white-, yellow-green diopside; brown-white, gray, pink, red-white, white dolomite; or brown, green, green-yellow, pink-red enstatite. It may maintain blue, brown, gray, pink, white feldspar; black, black-green hornblende; silver-white, steel-gray loellingite; or black, black-green, brown, brown-yellow, gray-brown, green-white, pink, purple, silver mica. Gray, white wollastonite sometimes nestles within the semi-precious stone, whose gold- and silver-like notes blue, orange, pink, white, yellow calcite and brass-white, brass-yellow pyrite nevertheless net.

Its 25 to 40 percent obligatory content of the mineral lazurite obliges the low- to high-saturated, medium to dark green to violet-blue tones of lapis lazuli.

Afghan and Persian, Chilean, Russian and Siberian lapis lazuli respectively present calcite-free, intense, medium-dark, uniform violet-blue; calcite-spotted, green-tinged blue; and calcite- and pyrite-included, variable blue tones.

Afghanistan and Iran versus China, India, Myanmar, Pakistan, Tajikistan and the United States (California and Colorado) qualify as current and 8,000-year-old versus modern lapis lazuli-producing countries. Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh’s (March 30, 1853-July 29, 1890) Starry Night and 18th-Dynasty Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s (reigned 1334?-1325 BCE) funerary mask reveal lapis lazuli mastery. The Gilson process simulates or synthesizes lapis lazuli, otherwise substitutable by howlite, jasper, sodalite or spinel, as artificial ultramarine (from Latin ultrā, “beyond” and marīnus, “of sea”).

Somov perhaps thought of world-renowned columns in lapis lazuli within St. Isaac’s Cathedral when he texturized Martynova’s dress, behind which he never thrust someone else’s masterpiece.
