Cleopatra III Was the Third of Seven Ptolemaic Queens Named Cleopatra

Summary: Cleopatra III was the third of seven queens named Cleopatra in Ancient Egypt's Ptolemaic Kingdom, which ended with Cleopatra VII's death in 30 BCE.

Cleopatra III was the third of seven queens named Cleopatra in Ancient Egypt's Ptolemaic Kingdom, an Ancient Greek state that ended with the death of the seventh Cleopatra in 30 BCE.

Cleopatra III Euergetis Philometor Soteira (Ancient Greek: Κλεοπάτρα Εὐεργέτις Φιλομήτωρ Σωτήιρα, Kleopatra Euerghetis Philometor Soteira; ca. 160/155-ca. September 101 BCE) was born ca. 160 to 155 BCE. Her parents were coupled siblings Cleopatra II Philometor Soteira (Ancient Greek: Κλεοπάτρα Φιλομήτωρ Σωτείρα, Kleopatra Philometor Soteira; ca. 185-116 BCE) and the first of her two brother-husbands, Ptolemy VI Philometor (Ancient Greek: Πτολεμαῖος Φιλομήτωρ, Ptolemaios Philometor; ca. 186–145 BCE).

Cleopatra II had married Ptolemy VI as her first brother-husband ca. March 175 BCE, according to American Egyptologist Christopher "Chris" John Bennett (1953-Jan. 10, 2014) in the "Cleopatra II" section of Ptolemaic Dynasty: The Genealogy on his Tynsdale House-provided website, Egyptian Royal Genealogy. The marriage was dated to April 176 BCE by English-Australian papyrologist and classicist John Whitehorne (July 2, 1944-March 5, 2020) in Cleopatras, published in 1994 (Chapter 8: Cleopatra II and Ptolemy VI, page 91).

Cleopatra III had at least one sister and two brothers as siblings. Her mother's dynastic name also had been given to Cleopatra III's older sister, Cleopatra Thea Eueteria (Ancient Greek: Κλεοπάτρα Θεά Ευετηρια, Kleopatra Thea Eueteria, "Cleopatra the Goddess of Plenty"; ca. 164-121 BCE). As with her first brother, Ptolemy VI, her second brother received the male Ptolemaic dynastic name of Ptolemy as Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II Tryphon (Ancient Greek: Πτολεμαῖος Εὐεργέτης Τρύφων, Ptolemaios Euergetes Tryphon, "Ptolemy the Benefactor, the Opulent"; ca. 184/183-June 28, 116 BCE).

Cleopatra III also may have had a second sister, Berenice. The detail of her engagement to Attalus III (Ancient Greek: Ἄτταλος Γ΄, Attalos III; ca. 171/170-133 BCE), King of northwestern Asia Minor's Kingdom of Pergamum (Ancient Greek: Πέργαμον, Pergamon, "citadel"), has contrasted sharply with the historical anonymity of shadowy Berenice (Ancient Greek: Βερενίκη, Berenike; ca. 163/160-ca. 150 BCE). Her name, her engagement and her distraught fiancé's accusations of her murder constitute the only details of Berenice's life, according to Chris Bennett ("Berenice," footnote 3). Her female Ptolemaic dynastic name has engendered the supposition of her Ptolemaic royal birth and has possibilitized the suggestion of King Attalus III's contemporaries, Cleopatra II and Ptolemy VI, as Berenice's parents.

Cleopatra III's father died ca. July 145 BCE from injuries sustained during the Battle of the Oinoparas River. The battle was fought in northwestern Syria at the Oinoparas River (modern-day Afrin River in Syria and Türkiye), a tributary of the Orontes (Ancient Greek: Ὀρόντης, Orontes), the northward-flowing river of Lebanon, Syria and Türkiye. Antioch, the second capital of Ptolemy VI's opponents, the Seleucid Empire (Ancient Greek: Βασιλεία τῶν Σελευκιδῶν, Basileia ton Seleukidon, "Kingdom of the Seleucids"; 312-63 BCE), was known as Antioch on the Orontes (Ancient Greek: Ἀντιόχεια ἡ ἐπὶ Ὀρόντου, Antiokheia he epi Orontou) for its location on the Orontes River's eastern bank.

Cleopatra III's widowed mother subsequently remarried, with her second brother, Ptolemy VIII, as her second husband. Cleopatra II's second brother-husband marriage took place ca. 145/144 BCE. The marriage added a half-sibling to Cleopatra III's sibling tally. Ptolemy Memphites (Ancient Greek: Πτολεμαῖος ὁ Μεμφίτης, Ptolemaios Memphites, "Ptolemy the Memphite") was born ca. late 144-mid-142 BCE.

Ptolemy VIII dissolved his marriage to Cleopatra II by January 140 BCE. The last mention of Cleopatra as Ptolemy VIII's wife occurred in the ancient Egyptian civil solar calendar's 12th month, Mesore (Ancient Greek: Μεσορή, Mesore), in year 30, equated to September 140 BCE.

Ptolemy VIII next married Cleopatra III, his niece and stepdaughter, as his second wife. The marriage took place between the 14th day of the eighth month, Pharmouthi (Ancient Greek: Φαρμουθί, Pharmouthi; from Egyptian pꜣ-n-rnn-wtt; Coptic: Ⲡⲁⲣⲙⲟⲩⲑⲓ, Parmouthi), year 29 and the 20th day of the fourth month, Choiak (Ancient Greek: Χοίακ, Khoiak; from Egyptian kꜣ-ḥr-kꜣ; Coptic Ⲭⲟⲓⲁⲕ, Khoiak), year 30, equated, respectively, to May 8, 141, and Jan. 14, 140 BCE (Chris Bennett, "Cleopatra III"). The first mention of Cleopatra III as Ptolemy VIII's Queen has been dated to Jan. 14, 140 BCE (Chris Bennett, "Cleopatra II," note 36).

The uncle/stepfather and niece/stepdaughter marital couple had at least five children. Two sons received male dynastic names as Ptolemy IX Soter II (Ancient Greek: Πτολεμαῖος Σωτήρ, Ptolemaios Soter, "Ptolemy the Saviour"; ca. 143-ca. December 81 BCE) and Ptolemy X Alexander I Philometor (Ancient Greek: Πτολεμαῖος Ἀλέξανδρος Φιλομήτωρ, Ptolemaios Alexandros Philometor; ca. 140-88/87 BCE).

Their oldest daughter was named Tryphaena (Ancient Greek: Τρύφαινα, Tryphaina; ca. 141/140-ca. 112/110 BCE). Modern sources usually refer to her as Cleopatra Tryphaena (Ancient Greek: Κλεοπάτρα Τρύφαινα, Kleopatra Tryphaina), although no ancient justification supports this designation (Chris Bennett, "Tryphaena," note 1).

Two more daughters numbered as the uncle and niece martial couple's fourth and fifth children. Ptolemy VIII and Cleopatra III continued the line of Ptolemaic Cleopatras by naming their two younger daughters as Cleopatra IV (Ancient Greek: Κλεοπάτρα, Kleopatra; ca. 138/135-112 BCE) and Cleopatra Selene I (Ancient Greek: Κλεοπάτρα Σελήνη, Kleopatra Selene; ca. 135-69 BCE).

First son and also first child Ptolemy IX was the only one of his siblings to die naturally. His younger brother Ptolemy X died during an attempted invasion of Cyprus.

All three daughters died by execution. Tryphaena ordered Cleopatra IV's execution, and, in turn, Seleucid King Antiochus IX Cyzicenus (?-95 BCE) had Tryphaena executed for having executed her younger sister, whom he had married ca. 114 BCE. Tigranes II (Armenian: Տիգրան Մեծ, Tigran Mets; Ancient Greek: Τιγράνης ὁ Μέγας Tigranes ho Megas; Latin: Tigranes Magnus; 140-55 BCE), known as Tigranes the Great, had Cleopatra Selene executed.

Ptolemy VII predeceased his niece-stepdaughter-wife. As with his oldest son, Ptolemy VII apparently died from natural causes. He passed away June 28, 116 BCE.

As with all three of her daughters, Cleopatra III experienced an unnatural death. Younger son Ptolemy X had her murdered.

Aztlan Is Equatorial Dark Albedo Feature on Titan's Saturn-Facing Side

Summary: Aztlan is an equatorial dark albedo feature on Titan's Saturn-facing side that forms a low albedo quartet with Aaru, Fensal and Senkyo.

Aztlan is an equatorial dark albedo feature on Titan's Saturn-facing side that forms an equatorial quartet of low albedo, or low reflectance, with three optically dark neighbor, Aaru, Fensal and Senkyo.

Aztlan is centered at minus 10 degrees south latitude, 20 degrees west longitude, according to the International Astronomical Union's (IAU) Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature. The Gazetteer assigns the low albedo feature's center latitude of minus 10 degrees south as its northernmost and southernmost latitudes and its center longitude of 20 degrees west as its easternmost and westernmost longitudes.

The southern equatorial-centered dark albedo feature participates with a trio of low albedo neighbors in forming an optically dark quartet in Titan's equatorial belt. Aztlan joins southern equatorial-centered Senkyo and northern equatorial-centered Aaru and Fensal in a darkened stretch across Titan's meridian.

Aztlan partners with Fensal as the dark quartet's low western longitudinal components. Fensal is positioned to the north of Aztlan.

Fensal is centered at 5 degrees north latitude, 30 degrees west longitude. The center coordinates of 5 degrees north and 30 degrees west are given as the low reflector's northernmost-southernmost latitudes and easternmost-westernmost longitudes, respectively.

Aaru partners with Senkyo as the dark quartet's far western longitudinal components. Aaru is positioned to the north of Senkyo.

Aaru is centered at 10 degrees north latitude, 340 degrees west longitude. Its center coordinates are also given as the low reflector's northernmost-southernmost latitudes and easternmost-western longitudes.

Senkyo is centered at minus 5 degrees south latitude, 320 degrees west longitudes. Its center latitude and longitude are also repeated as its northernmost-southernmost latitudes and easternmost-westernmost longitudes.

A pareidolia (Greek: παρά, pará, "beside, alongside, instead [of]" plus εἴδωλον, eídōlon, "image, form, shape") distinguishes the Titanean equatorial belt's quartet for Earth-based observers. Aztlan's and Fensal's parallel darkness appears as a sidewise lowercase letter h. Fensal forms the northern leg of the pareidolia, while Aztlan contributes the optical illusion's southern leg. Prior to official naming, the region of the two features was known as "the H," according to NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's (JPL) Photojournal website's post, "Monitoring 'Fensal-Aztlan,'" published Sep. 13, 2005.

Landforms described as "islands" occur in the Aztlan-Fensal neighborhood. The "islands" are considered to be water ice upland areas that outcrop the surrounding shallow terrain of dark particulate infill. The islands, which are mainly small but with a few larger exceptions, pepper Fensal.

Aztlan's scarcity of the insular landforms contrasts with neighbor Fensal's insular abundance. The September 2005 post notes Aztlan's comparative devoidness of small insular landforms in an inventory of "three large islands in its western reaches, plus only a few smaller islands."

Sotra Facula is identified as the largest of Aztlan's three large islands. Sotra Facula (Latin: "little torch") received official name approval in 2006 but was subsequently dropped from Titan's list of facula and approved in 2012 as Sotra Patera (Latin: patera, "small, broad, flat dish or saucer, usually used for ritual libations"), according to The Gazetter of Planetary Nomenclature.

Sotra Patera is centered at minus 14.54 degrees south latitude, 40 degrees west longitude. It records northernmost and southernmost latitudes of minus 14.18 degrees south and minus 14.98 degrees south, respectively. It registers easternmost and westernmost longitudes of 39.74 degrees west and 40.46 degrees west, respectively. Sotra Patera's diameter measures 40 kilometers.

The dark quartet created by the neighboring duos of Aztlan-Fensal and Aaru-Senkyo occupies the extensive dune fields that occur in Titan's equatorial belt. A preferential detection of acetylene (C2H2) occurs in low albedo areas, such as sand dunes, according to planetary scientist Sandeep Singh and eight co-authors in their article, "Acetylene on Titan's Surface," published in the Sep. 1, 2016, issue of The Astrophysical Journal. Their study focused on three equatorial regions of Aztlan-Fensal and their shared, high albedo, equator-centered neighbor, Quivira; Tui Regio; and eastern Shangri-La. Their dectection of strong absorption bands of acetylene in Aztlan-Fensal's dark dunes confirmed their prediction of the presence of acetylene in dark-composed dune fields.

The International Astronomical Union approved Aztlan's name in 2006. The Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature identifies Aztlan as: "Mythical land from which the Aztecs believed they migrated." The name conforms with the IAU convention of naming Titan's albedo features for "Sacred or enchanted places, paradise, or celestial realms" as identified in "legends, myths, stories, and poems of cultures from around the world."

Cora’s Tales Are Maybe Truer Than Melvin’s in Lights! Camera! Puzzles!

Cora’s tales are maybe, maybe not truer than Melvin’s stories in Lights! Camera! Puzzles! as 20th mystery in the 20-book Puzzle Lady series authored by Parnell Hall (Oct. 31, 1934-Dec. 15, 2020).

Puzzle lady Cora Felton brings her six to seven ex-husbands into non-related and related banter with adopted, cradle and sojourning Connecticuters, especially Bakerhavenites, and New Yorkers. She officially considers her ex-husbands but unofficially counts other women’s married or separated husbands, such as Dr. Barney Nathan and New York Police Department Sergeant Crowley. She discusses Frank, Henry and Melvin more than Arthur, Jerry and Larry even as she perhaps desired most unmarried boyfriend Randy and fiancé Raymond Harstein III.

Cora enumerates Jerry as first husband, first ex-husband and only husband to encourage her to end her alcoholism by establishing orange juice as deterrent and remedy.

Arthur figures as Cora’s second husband and second ex-husband, as her only husband firmly against, not fine about, her exhibitionist, exquisite, red, satin, short, tight dress.

Henry gets gauged as second or fourth husband and ex-husband, with the latter granting Jerry and Arthur first and second spousal iterations and Frank third iteration. Cora hails Frank or Henry as one or the other holding the Jewish faith but having a church, white-wedding ceremony and handling trimming her Christmas trees. She inveighs against Henry introducing her to international travel to such interesting locales as romantic France’s Eiffel Tower and then itinerating to everywhere else without her.

Cora joking and jousting with her ex-husbands in misjudged orders of marital succession perhaps jeopardizes her truer tales less than untruer stories in Lights! Camera! Puzzles!

Divorce proceedings against cowboy-like, poker-playing Henry and his El Pasoite corespondent kindles Cora keeping her second or fourth husband’s horse, house and 10-gallon (37.85-liter) Stetson hat.

Cora links Henry letting a lovely maid into their household to their divorce even as she lauds her husbands not loading her with housekeeping and laundry. She mentions as Yale University graduate her third husband and ex-husband, whom she monikers Frank, even as it may be Henry, third after Jerry and Arthur. Frank nestled them into mystery-solving weekends with actors nursing their audiences through crime-solving clues even as Cora and Frank respectively netted stolen diamond earrings and corespondents.

Cora not observing where in the marital order Larry occurs perhaps occasions no more objections to her true tales than her untruer in Lights! Camera! Puzzles!

Niece Sherry Carter Grant presents Larry, who perhaps places as fifth husband and ex-husband, as only possibly pleasant and pleasing of all Cora’s spouses and ex-spouses.

Cora, who successfully quested an annulment the day after her marriage to Larry, still married to his still-living wife, quantifies Melvin as fifth husband and ex-husband. Melvin Crabtree represented himself as rich, unlike Cora’s other really rich husbands, and unmarried even as he received his third of eight divorces six months later. He sabotages their honeymoon by seducing a New York nightclub cocktail waitress and their marriage even as he shows Cora how to collect antiques and shoot.

Melvin two-timing eighth wife, Evelyn Anne Miller, with Bambi tends to tally his stories as untruer and Cora’s stories as truer tales for Lights! Camera! Puzzles!
