American solar astronomer John Allen “Jack” Eddy (March 25, 1931-June 10, 2009) ended his NASA-published book, A New Sun: The Solar Results From Skylab (1979), with a poem, The Sun, composed and illustrated by his older daughter, Amy (born 1960), when she was 7 years old. Amy’s poem addressed the most basic unknowns about Earth’s sun, described from a timeless perspective of wonder, and expressed human doubts in unpuzzling the solar mysteries.

John Eddy preceded Amy’s poem with a concluding assessment of the immense solar data gathered by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) three manned missions, conducted between May 1973 and February 1974, to the Skylab space station. After noting the revelations gleaned from Skylab’s sophisticated instruments, Eddy tackled some of the questions arising from Skylab’s data.

“We can be even more certain that all the questions are not yet answered, or even asked, nor all the surprises found. Skylab gave us a detailed look at the Sun during only one phase of its varied behavior, near the minimum of the 11-yr solar cycle,” Eddy observed. “What are the natures of coronal holes, coronal transients, and bright points when the Sun is at the maximum of its well-known activity cycle? What is the cause of the 11-yr cycle of sunspots and of more anomalous times when solar activity seems to disappear altogether from the Sun? How constant is the Sun? Solar variation clearly affects our upper atmosphere, producing the aurora borealis, distortions of our magnetic field, and changes in our ionosphere. Do these or other changes on the Sun affect short-term weather or long-term climate on Earth? And if so, which solar changes, and how? What powers the Sun? How long will that fuel source last, and how constantly will it burn? Are our theories of the solar interior (which no one has ever seen) correct, or, as so often is the case, only a present approximation in the winding path toward truth?” (page 180)

The Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM), primarily positioned atop the space station cluster’s Multiple Docking Adaptor (MDA), effected Skylab’s unprecedented forays into solar observation. The ATM’s cylindrical enclosure sheltered eight solar instruments from severe temperatures and residual contamination encountered during the space station’s daily 15.4 orbits, at a speed of 29,000 kilometers (18,019. 76 miles) per hour, 435 kilometers (270.29 miles) above Earth’s surface. One of the canister’s quadrants held a white light coronagraph and an x-ray telescope. An adjacent quadrant contained an ultraviolet spectroheliometer and hydrogen-alpha telescope number one (Hα no. 1). An extreme ultraviolet spectroheliograph and hydrogen-alpha telescope number two (Hα no. 2) were positioned in the next quadrant, whose neighboring quadrant housed an ultraviolet spectrograph and another x-ray telescope.

The nine astronauts who occupied Skylab space station over three manned missions (May 25 to June 22, 1973; July 28 to Sept. 25, 1973; Nov. 16, 1973, to Feb. 8, 1974) controlled the ATM telescopes via the station’s ATM console. The control console was located inside the Multiple Docking Adaptor, which connected each mission’s docked Apollo Command and Service Module (CSM) with astronaut living quarters in the Orbital Workshop (OWS).

Eddy noted that Skylab’s powerful array achieved insights presenting the sun as more than “a simple sphere of fire.” Ultraviolet and x-ray photographs penetrated previously hidden interrelationships of the solar atmosphere’s layers and revealed that “. . . the Sun’s appearance changes dramatically from layer to layer, as though it wore mask on mask on mask” (page 7).

The takeaways for The Sun poem by 7-year-old Amy Eddy are that the words by solar astronomer John Eddy’s older daughter expressed basic, yet complex, questions about Earth’s sun and that Skylab’s data, collected between May 1973 and February 1974, revealed a changing array of knowns and unknowns about the sun’s roiling yet “round & shiny happy face.”

La Damnation de Faust Is Feb. 8, 2020, Met Opera Saturday Matinee Broadcast

Hector Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust is the Feb. 8, 2020, Met Opera Saturday matinee broadcast, airing at 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) and numbering as the 10th of 23 scheduled Saturday radio matinees during the 2019-2020 Met Opera season.

Nineteenth-century French Romantic composer Louis-Hector Berlioz (Dec. 11, 1803-March 8, 1869) set the musical score for his dramatic legend (légende dramatique) to a French libretto co-written with French librettist Almire Philbert Gandonnière (Aug. 3, 1813-Oct. 25, 1863). The libretto’s literary source was Gérard de Nerval’s French translation of Faust: Eine Tragödie (Faust: A Tragedy), also known as Faust, Part One, by German naturalist and poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Aug. 28, 1749-March 22, 1832). Gérard de Nerval was the pen name of French poet, translator and writer Gérard Labrunie (May 22, 1808-Jan. 26, 1855).

Goethe’s Faust: Eine Tragödie was first published in 1808. Labrunie completed his prose translation in 1828.

La Damnation de Faust, scored for soloists, choruses and orchestra, premiered Dec. 6, 1846, at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, France. Berlioz’s concert-styled opera was performed in the second of three opera houses, all named Salle Favart, built on the same location, Place BoÏeldieu, in the 2nd arrondissment (IIe arrondissement) for the opera company.

La Damnation de Faust received its Metropolitan Opera premiere on Feb. 2, 1896. Berlioz’s opera, which was presented as a concert, received three performances in the 1895-1896 season.

The Metropolitan Opera presented La Damnation de Faust as a new production for the opera house’s United States stage premiere on Dec. 7, 1906. La Damnation de Faust received six performances in the 1906-1907 season. The season’s first five performances were offered in the operatic version. The season’s sixth performance was presented Feb. 3, 1907, in the concert version for the Tenth Grand Sunday Night Concert, according to MetOpera Database, the Metropolitan Opera’s online archives.

Nine decades passed between the Metropolitan Opera’s United States stage premiere and the opera house’s next presentation of La Damnation de Faust. In the 1996-1997 Met Opera season, Berlioz’s Faust was performed Nov. 10, 1996, and June 13, 1997, in the concert version, under the conductorship of the opera house’s second music director, James Levine.

On Nov. 7, 2008, the Metropolitan Opera debuted a new production of La Damnation de Faust, directed by Robert Lepage. The Canadian film and stage director’s new staging received eight performances in the 2008-2009 season.

A revival was offered in the autumn of the following season. The 2009-2010 season featured seven performances of La Damnation de Faust, with closing night taking place Nov. 17, 2009.

The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s performances of La Damnation de Faust mark the first presentation of Berlioz’s Faustian opera at the opera house in more than a decade (specifically: 10 years, 2 months, 8 days, excluding the end date). The Metropolitan Opera website’s page on the 2019-2020 season’s La Damnation de Faust notes that the “more usual concert version” is presented because of the revived stage production’s “the unanticipated technical demands.”

In the 2019-2020 Met Opera season, four concert performances are offered. The first performance took place Saturday, Jan. 25, at 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). The month’s second performance was presented Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m.

The season’s last two performances of La Damnation de Faust are scheduled for February. The performance Saturday, Feb. 1, begins at 8 p.m. The concert version closes Saturday, Feb. 8, as the 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s 10th Saturday matinee broadcast.

Edward Gardner conducts all four performances of La Damnation de Faust. The English conductor made his Metropolitan Opera debut in the opera house’s 960th performance of Carmen by 19th-century French Romantic Era composer Georges Bizet (Oct. 25, 1838-June 3, 1875).

Elīna Garanča appears as Marguerite, whom Faust saves. The Latvian operatic mezzo-soprano made her Metropolitan Opera debut Jan. 12, 2008, as Rosina in the opera house’s 565th performance of Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Italian composer Gioachino Rossini (Feb. 29, 1792-Nov. 13, 1868).

Bryan Hymel appears in the title role as world-weary Faust for January’s two performances (Saturday, Jan. 25; Wednesday, Jan. 29). The American tenor made his Metropolitan Opera debut Dec. 26, 2012, as Aeneas in the opera house’s 41st performance of Berlioz’s Les Troyens.

Michael Spyres claims the title role for February’s two performances (Saturday, Feb. 1; Saturday matinee broadcast, Feb. 8). The American operatic tenor’s performance Saturday, Feb. 1, marks his Metropolitan Opera debut.

Ildar Abdrazakov appears as Méphistophélès, who succeeds in claiming Faust's soul. In the 2019-2020 Met Opera season, Ildar Abdrazakov also appears as Banquo in Macbeth by 19th-century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901). The Russian bass-baritone made his Metropolitan Opera debut March 1, 2004, as Masetto in the opera house’s 476th performance of Don Giovanni by Classical Era composer Wolfgang Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756-Dec. 5, 1791).

The takeaway for La Damnation de Faust as the Feb. 8, 2020, Met Opera Saturday matinee broadcast is that Hector Berlioz’s dramatic legend, presented in its concert version, airs at 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and numbers as the 10th of 23 Saturday matinees broadcast weekly through Saturday, May 9, 2020.

Hawaiian House Mice Are Not Playing Magnum's A Game of Cat and Mouse

Hawaiian house mice alluded to on Magnum PI action drama television series episode A Game of Cat and Mouse Jan. 31, 2020, actually avoid aggressive Javanese mongooses more than amiable Hawaiian cats.

Director Roderick Davis and writer Gene Hong bring actual and symbolic rehearsed and serious hunting techniques of pursuit, near-capture and escape into Season Two's 14th episode. The series' 34th episode overall considers cats and mice chasing one another even though current Hawaiian contexts concern Javanese mongooses (Herpestes javanicus) more than Hawaiian cats. Season One's seventh episode, The Cat Who Cried Wolf, Nov. 5, 2018, depicts Hawaiian cats more dedicated to justice, rice and sardines than Hawaiian house mice.

Abundant food and freshwater sources, maritime transportation and pleasant year-round weather encourage Hawaiian house mice establishing themselves on Hawai'i, Kaho'olawe, Kaua'i, Lāna'i, Maui, Molokai and O'ahu.

Hawaiian house mice function as Hawaiian Island-naturalized members of the Muridae (from Greek μῦς, "mouse" and -ειδής, "-like") family and Rodentia (from Latin rōdēns, "gnawing") order.

Physically and sexually mature two-plus-month-old female Hawaiian house mice go through 15 to 30 weeks gestating yearly litters and 40 to 80 total weeks parenting them. They have five to 10 three to 12-member litters during year-round breeding seasons that herald blind, hairless newborns; weaned 21-day-olds; and physically and sexually mature two-month-olds. Colonial French, Portuguese and Spanish explorers introduced what now is the Hawaiian subspecies of European house mice, identified by Carl Linnaeus (May 23, 1707-Jan. 10, 1778).

Environmental stress, habitat loss, human predators and predatory animals jeopardize Hawaiian house mice survivalistically eating 10 percent of body weight daily through 20 meals per day.

Hawaiian house mice keep close to covered above and below-ground communal shelters in habitat niches with accessible, reliable, year-round animal prey, plant parts and water sources.

Hawaiian house mice look for berries, fruits, grains, seeds, vegetables; caterpillars, earthworms, flightless moths; and, when they lack all else, animal fat-laden glue, paste and soap. They manifest big ears and eyes; clean coats by grooming one another and themselves; ingrooved incisors; scent glands for territory-marking; and four-toed front, five-toed back feet. Hawaiian house mice, named Mus musculus (from Latin mūs, "mouse" and mūsculus, "little mouse"), net brown-gray upper-body and brown-gray-white lower-body hair and dusky, near-hairless, scaly tails.

Hawaiian house mice observe 0.63 to 0.81-ounce (18 to 23-gram), 5.12 to 7.87-inch (13 to 20-centimeter) head-body and 2.36 to 3.94-inch (6 to 10-centimeter) tail lengths.

Hawaiian mice put cold-weather fruits, grains, seeds and vegetables and nesting materials in storage rooms within communal burrows whose above-ground, below-ground territorial ranges male-placed scents post.

Hawaiian house mice queue up, from 119.75-foot (36.5-meter) indoor, 1.99-plus-mile (3.2-plus-kilometer) outdoor ranges, in individual nests within shared burrows in extended-network colonies under hierarchically ranked males. They realize outdoor stages as indoor/outdoor species in commercial and subsistence-scale grain fields where they reduce animal and plant pest populations until fallow-season, post-harvest plowing schedules. Indoor stages send them into commercial and subsistence-scale barns and silos where they survive on thereby contaminated stored supplies; into wall spaces; and under large appliances.

Hawaiian house mice tempt Mittens of the freckled belly and the Mittens lookalike of the non-freckled belly less than a night out and a solved crime.

Compassionate, even-tempered, intelligent yellow Labrador Retrievers know ears kept back, close to head and low; otter-like, rudder-like, straight, taper-tipped, thick-based tails; and arched, water-savvy, webbed toes.

Yellow Labrador Retrievers look black of eye rims; black and, in extended cold weather, pink of nose; brown of eye; and cream-white to fox-red of coat. Physical and sexual maturity nestles male yellow Labrador Retrievers into 22.52 to 24.49-inch (57.2 to 62.2-centimeter-) high withers and 65.04 to 80.03-pound (29.5 to 36.3-kilogram) weights.

Physically and sexually mature female and male yellow Labrador Retrievers observe elbow-ground heights and shoulder-rump lengths one-half and equal to or slightly longer than shoulder-ground heights.

Black, chocolate and yellow Labrador Retrievers perhaps preserve pairings of rough-coated, sensitive-nosed St. John's Lesser Newfoundlands with hard, short, water-repelling-coated pointers and heavy, wavy-coated retrieving settlers.

Black, chocolate and yellow Labrador Retrievers qualified as breeds accepted by the English Kennel Club in 1903 and registered by the American Kennel Club in 1917. They resided among outpost sailors and settlers on colonial Newfoundland, perhaps as St. John's water dog descendants of earlier Basque, Breton, British and Viking dog breeds. They spread from Newfoundland, Canada, of the 16th to 19th centuries; to England in the 19th century; and to the United States in the 20th century.

Yellow Labrador Retrievers thrive on tasksmanship and teamsmanship so perhaps trauma takes more tenuous tolls on Eddie with crossover times for Magnum PI's Apollo and Zeus.
