Carmen Was Franco Zeffirelli’s 10th Met Opera Production

Summary: Carmen was Franco Zeffirelli’s 10th Met Opera production, debuting in the 1996-1997 season as his only Bizet opera at the opera house.

Carmen was Franco Zeffirelli’s 10th Met Opera production, which debuted in the 1996-1997 season as the only Bizet opera staged by the Italian designer and director at the Metropolitan Opera.

The Metropolitan Opera debuted Franco Zeffirelli’s Carmen on Halloween, Thursday, Oct. 31, 1996, in the opera house’s 840th performance of the tragic opera about a fateful seductress by French Romantic Era composer Georges Bizet (Oct. 25, 1838-June 3, 1875). The new production received 23 performances in the 1996-1997 Met Opera season.

Franco Zeffirelli (Feb. 12, 1923-June 15, 2019) directed and designed the sets for the only Bizet opera that he staged at the Metropolitan Opera. His production team comprised Italian costume designer Anna Anni (Nov. 21, 1926-Jan. 1, 2011), American theatrical lighting designer Duane Schuler and Canadian choreographer and American choreographer and flamenco dancer María Benítez.

James Levine (born June 23, 1943) conducted on opening night and the next 13 performances. The Metropolitan Opera’s second music director had conducted all performances in the 1989-1990 and 1986-1987 debut seasons of Zeffirelli’s ninth and seventh Met Opera productions, Don Giovanni by Classical Era composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756-Dec. 5, 1791) and Turandot by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924). He also had conducted opening night and 16 of 20 performances in the 1981-1982 debut season of Zeffirelli’s fourth Met Opera production, Puccini’s La Bohème.

Two conductors were responsible for the debut season’s last nine performances. Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo (born Jan. 21, 1941) conducted three performances that were staged for the opera company’s 1996-1997 Japan tour. Franco-Canadian conductor Yves Abel (born Feb. 8, 1963) conducted the last six performances.

Three mezzo-sopranos share the title role in the production’s debut season. German mezzo-soprano Waltraud Meier (born Jan. 9, 1956) sang Carmen on opening night and 13 other dates. American operatic mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves (born March 7, 1964) sang Carmen in nine performances. American mezzo-soprano Wendy White (born 1953) sang Carmen on closing night.

Four tenors shared the role of besotted Don José. Plácido Domingo sang on opening night and six other dates. American tenor John Horton Murray (born Oct. 10, 1961) sang in the debut season’s second performance. Argentinian operatic tenor Luis Lima (Sept. 12, 1948) sang Don José in nine performances. American operatic tenor Vinson Cole (born Nov. 21, 1950) covered the role in four performances. American operatic tenor Neil Rosenshein (born Nov. 27, 1947) sang in two performances, including closing night.

Three sopranos shared the role of José's friend and almost fiancée, Micaela. Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu sang Michaela on opening night and 12 other dates. South Korean-American lyric soprano Hei-Kyung Hong had the role for six performances. Spanish Basque soprano Ainhoa Arteta (born Sept. 24, 1964) sang Micaela in four performances, including closing night.

The Metropolitan Opera staged seven revivals of Zeffirelli’s Carmen in the 11 seasons after the production’s 1996-1997 season debut. The production skipped four seasons in the interim.

The Metropolitan Opera immediately followed the production’s debut season with two successive revivals, in seasons 1997-1998 and 1998-1999. No revival was offered in the 1999-2000 season.

The third revival occurred in the 2000-2001 season. No revival was offered in the 2001-2002 season.

The fourth revival took place in the 2002-2003 season. No revival was offered in the 2003-2004 season.

The fifth and sixth revivals were staged successively, in the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons. No revival was offered in the 2006-2007 season.

The seventh and last revival took place in the 2007-2008 season. The final performance of Zeffirelli’s production of Carmen took place March 1, 2008, during the seventh revival.

The final performance numbered as the production’s 106th performance and as the opera house’s 945th performance of Bizet’s Carmen. From debut to final performance, Zeffirelli’s Carmen remained in the Met Opera’s active repertory for 11 years 4-plus months.

One season passed before the Metropolitan Opera debuted a new production of Carmen in the 2009-2010 season. English film, opera, television and theatre director Sir Richard Eyre (born March 28, 1943) debuted his new staging New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, 2009. The opera received 14 performances.

The first revival of Sir Richard’s Carmen occurred in the following season, 2010-2011. The second through sixth revivals have taken place in alternating seasons, with staging in seasons 2012-2013, 2014-2015, 2016-2017 and 2018-2019. Thus far, six seasons of Sir Richard’s Carmen have obtained 79 performances.

The takeaways for Franco Zeffirelli’s Carmen as his 10th Met Opera production are that the opera about a fateful seductress is the only Bizet opera in Zeffirelli’s Metropolitan Opera portfolio and that the Italian designer and director’s production experienced seven revivals, tallied 106 performances and remained in Met Opera’s active repertory for 11 years 4-plus months.

Don Giovanni Was Franco Zeffirelli’s Ninth Met Opera Production

Summary: Don Giovanni was Franco Zeffirelli’s ninth Met Opera production, debuting in the 1989-1990 season as his only Mozart opera at the opera house.

Don Giovanni was Franco Zeffirelli’s ninth Met Opera production, which debuted in the 1989-1990 season as the only Mozart opera staged by the Italian designer and director at the Metropolitan Opera.

The Metropolitan Opera debuted Franco Zeffirelli’s Don Giovanni on Thursday, March 22, 1990, in the opera house’s 388th performance of the comic, melodramatic and supernatural opera about a serial seducer’s fateful forays by Classical Era composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756-Dec. 5, 1791). The new production received nine performances in the 1989-1990 Met Opera season.

Franco Zeffirelli (Feb. 12, 1923-June 15, 2019) directed and designed the sets for the only Mozart opera that he staged at the Metropolitan Opera. His production team comprised Italian costume designer Anna Anni, American theatrical lighting designer Gil Wechsler (born Feb. 5, 1942) and Canadian choreographer and Metropolitan Opera Ballet director Norbert Vesak (Oct. 22, 1936-Oct. 2, 1990).

James Levine (born June 23, 1943) conducted all nine performances of Zeffirelli’s Don Giovanni during the production’s debut season. The Metropolitan Opera’s second music director had conducted all eight performances of Zeffirelli’s seventh Met Opera production, Turandot by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924), during the new staging’s debut season, 1986-1987. He conducted opening night and 16 of 20 performances in the 1981-1982 debut season of Zeffirelli’s fourth Met Opera production, Puccini’s La Bohème.

Two basses sang the title role in the production’s debut season. American operatic bass Samuel Ramey (born March 28, 1942) sang in the debut season’s premiere and the next four performances. Italian bass Ferruccio Furlanetto (born May 16, 1949) assumed the title role for the season’s last four performances.

Two basses shared the role of the Commendatore, whose murder brings about Don Giovanni’s downfall. German operatic bass Kurt Moll (April 11, 1938-March 5, 2017) sang on opening night and the next five performances. Finnish operatic bass Matti Salminen (born July 7, 1945) appeared in the role for the last three performances.

Two sopranos shared the role the Commendatore’s daughter, Donna Anna. American lirico-spinto soprano Carol Vaness (born July 27, 1952) sang on opening night, the next six performances and closing night. American operatic soprano Marilyn Mims (born Sept. 8, 1954) sang Donna Anna in the debut season’s penultimate performance.

Two sopranos share the role of Donna Elvira, one of the seducer’s seduces. Finnish operatic soprano Karita Mattila (born Sept. 5, 1960) made her Metropolitan Opera debut in the role on opening night and sang in the next four performances. American soprano Ashley Putnam (born Aug. 10, 1952) sang Donna Elvira in the debut season’s last four performances.

The Metropolitan Opera staged seven revivals of Zeffirelli’s Don Giovanni in the 13 seasons since the production’s 1989-1990 season debut. The production skipped six seasons in the interim.

The Metropolitan Opera immediately followed the production’s debut season with two successive revivals, in seasons 1990-1991 and 1991-1992. No revivals were offered in the 1992-1993 and 1993-1994 seasons.

The third and fourth revivals were staged successively in seasons 1994-1995 and 1995-1996. No revival was offered in the 1996-1997 season.

The fifth revival took place in the 1997-1998 season. No revivals were offered in the 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 seasons.

The production’s sixth revival occurred in the 2000-2001 season. No revival was offered in the 2001-2002 season.

The seventh and last revival was staged in the 2002-2003 season. The final performance of Zeffirelli’s production of Don Giovanni took place Feb. 15, 2003, during the seventh revival.

The final performance numbered as the production’s 88th performance and as the opera house’s 475th performance of Don Giovanni. From debut to final performance, Zeffirelli’s Don Giovanni remained in Met Opera’s regularly performed repertory for 12 years 10 and three-fourths months.

The Metropolitan Opera immediately replaced Zeffirelli’s Don Giovanni with a new production in the next season, 2003-2004. Marthe Keller (born Jan. 28, 1945) debuted her new staging March 1, 2004, with 15 performances. The Swiss actress and opera director’s production experienced three revivals (2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2008-2009) over the next five seasons. The last performance, April 24, 2009, in the third revival numbered as the production’s 39th.

Three seasons passed before the opera house debuted a new production in the 2011-2012 season. British theatre director and producer Michael Grandage (born May 2, 1962) debuted his staging of Don Giovanni on Oct. 13, 2011. The opera received 17 performances.

The first revival of Grandage’s Don Giovanni took place in the following season, 2012-2013. The second through fourth revivals have claimed alternating seasons, with staging in seasons 2014-2015, 2016-2017 and 2018-2019. Thus far, over five seasons of play, Grandage’s Don Giovanni claims 62 performances.

The takeaways for Franco Zeffirelli’s Don Giovanni as his ninth Met Opera production are that the opera about an outwitted seducer is the only Mozart opera in Zeffirelli’s Metropolitan Opera portfolio and that the Italian designer and director’s production experienced seven revivals, obtained 88 performances and remained in Met Opera’s active repertory for 12 years 10-plus months.

Franco Zeffirelli Made His Met Opera Debut in Staging Verdi’s Falstaff

Italian film, opera and television director and producer Franco Zeffirelli made his Met Opera debut in his new staging of Verdi’s Falstaff during the Metropolitan Opera’s 1963-1964 season.

Gian Franco Corsi Zeffirelli (Feb. 12, 1923-June 15, 2019), known as Franco Zeffirelli, debuted Friday, March 6, 1964, at the Metropolitan Opera in his new production of Falstaff by 19th-century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901). The new production received 15 performances in the 1963-1964 Met Opera season.

The new production’s season premiere marked Zeffirelli’s debuts as production director and as designer. He designed the production’s costumes and sets. Choreographer and ballet dancer William Burdick (?-2005) was the production’s choreographer.

American music critic and historian Irving Kolodin (Feb. 21, 1908-April 29, 1988) noted in his review in the March 7, 1964, issue of Saturday Review that Zeffirelli’s production of Falstaff at the Metropolitan Opera numbered as his sixth career staging and design of the opera. Zeffirelli’s prior Falstaffs included stagings for the Holland Festival, Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1956; Israel National Opera, Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1959; and Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, England, in 1961.

Zeffirelli’s new Falstaff also debuted Leonard Bernstein (Aug. 25, 1918-Oct. 14, 1990) as the opera’s conductor. The American composer, conductor and pianist conducted 10 of the premiere season’s 15 performances.

Martin Rich (Oct. 8, 1905-Oct. 23, 2000) conducted five of the six performances that were staged away from the opera house for Met Opera’s 1963-1964 tour. The German opera and symphonic conductor had made his Metropolitan Opera debut Jan. 25, 1955, in the opera house’s 177th performance of Manon by French Romantic Era composer Jules Massenet (May 12, 1842-Aug. 13, 1912).

The Metropolitan Opera staged 10 revivals of Zeffirelli’s production. The first revival took place in the following season, 1964-1965. Subsequent 20th-century revivals were staged in the 1965-1966, 1967-1968, 1971-1972, 1974-1975, 1985-1986, 1992-1993 and 1995-1966 seasons.

The production’s ninth and 10th revivals took place in the 21st century. The ninth revival was offered in the 2001-2002 Met Opera season. The 10th and last revival was staged in the 2005-2006 season.

The Metropolitan Opera’s second music director, James Levine, began his association with Zeffirelli’s production during the fourth revival. In the fourth revival, in the 1971-1972 season, he conducted two of the season’s nine performances. In the fifth revival, in the 1974-1975 season, Maestro Levine conducted eight of the revival’s 13 performances. He conducted all performances in the sixth through ninth revivals, which took place in the 1985-1986, 1992-1993, 1995-1996 and 2001-2002 seasons, respectively. In the 10th and last revival, staged in the 2005-2006 season, Maestro Levine conducted seven of the season’s eight performances.

The Metropolitan Opera’s last performance of Zeffirelli’s Falstaff took place Oct. 22, 2005. The production’s 109 performances encompassed 10 revivals and spanned 41 years and 7 and one-half months.

The Metropolitan Opera replaced Zeffirelli’s Falstaff with a new production in the 2013-2014 Met Opera season. Robert Carsen’s new staging debuted Dec. 6, 2013, in the opera’s 176th performance at the opera house. The Canadian opera director’s production received 10 performances in the 2013-2014 season. James Levine conducted all performances.

The Metropolitan Opera revived Carsen’s production during the 2018-2019 season. Seven performances were offered during the first revival.

The Metropolitan Opera hosted the United States premiere of Falstaff Feb. 4, 1895. English actor and stage manager William Parry (Jan. 9, 1856-) directed the newly produced opera. Italian orchestral conductor Luigi Mancinelli (Feb. 5, 1848-Feb. 2, 1921) was the premiere’s conductor. The production received 12 performances in the 1894-1895 season. The Metropolitan Opera never revived Parry’s staging.

The takeaways for Franco Zeffirelli’s making his Met Opera debut in staging Verdi’s Falstaff are that the Italian film, opera and television director and producer shared his debut as director and designer with American composer, conductor and pianist Leonard Bernstein as conductor and that the Metropolitan Opera performances of Zeffirelli’s production included 10 revivals and spanned four decades.

Only Two of 11 Zeffirelli Productions Are Still Revived at Met Opera

Only two of 11 Zeffirelli productions are still revived at Met Opera, with the most recent revivals of La Bohème and Turandot occurring in the 2019-2020 season.

Italian designer, director and producer Franco Zeffirelli (Feb. 12, 1923-June 15, 2019) directed and designed sets for new productions of three operas (La Bohème, Tosca, Turandot) by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924) at the Metropolitan Opera. Only La Bohème and Turandot remain in the opera company’s active repertory.

Zeffirelli debuted his new production of La Bohème on Dec. 14, 1981, as his fifth staged opera at the Metropolitan Opera. His new production received 20 performances in the 1981-1982 season. The Metropolitan Opera’s 35th revival of Zeffirelli’s production took place in the 2019-2020 season.

Zeffirelli debuted his new production of Turandot on March 12, 1987, as his seventh Met Opera production. Turandot received eight performances in the 1986-1987 season. The Metropolitan Opera’s 16th revival of Zeffirelli’s production occurred in the 2019-2020 season.

La Bohème and Turandot remain as the only two of Zeffirelli’s original 11 productions that are still revived. The Metropolitan Opera has retired nine Zeffirelli productions. Three were withdrawn in the 20th century. Six were retired in the first decade of the 21st century.

Zeffirelli debuted his new staging of Falstaff by 19th-century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901) on March 6, 1964, as his first Met Opera production. In addition to directing, he designed the opera’s costumes and sets. Zeffirelli’s production of Verdi’s third Shakespearean opera received 15 performances in the 1963-1964 season. Zeffirelli’s Falstaff experienced 10 revivals. The 10th revival’s closing night, during the 2005-2006 season, marked the production’s retirement.

Zeffirelli debuted his staging of Antony and Cleopatra by American 20th-century composer Samuel Barber (March 9, 1910-Jan. 23, 1981) on Sept. 16, 1966, as his second Met Opera production. The world premiere of Barber’s Shakespearean opera inaugurated the Metropolitan Opera House’s new location in Manhattan’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. In addition to directing, Zeffirelli designed the opera’s costumes and sets. Antony and Cleopatra received eight performances in the 1966-1967 season. The production was retired after the inaugural season.

Zeffirelli debuted his new productions of Cavalleria Rusticana by Italian opera composer Pietro Mascagni (Dec. 7, 1863-Aug. 2, 1945) and Pagliacci by Italian opera composer and librettist Ruggero Leoncavallo (April 23, 1857-Aug. 9, 1919) on Jan. 8, 1970, as his third Met Opera production. In addition to directing, he designed the production’s costumes and sets. Cav Pag received 19 performances in the 1969-1970 season. Zeffirelli’s Cav Pag experienced 16 revivals before retirement at the end of the 2008-2009 season.

Zeffirelli’s new production of Otello debuted March 25, 1972, as the Italian designer and director’s fourth Met Opera production and second Verdi opera at the Metropolitan Opera. In addition to directing, he designed Otello’s sets. Otello received 17 performances in the 1971-1972 season. Otello’s eighth and final revival took place in the 1989-1990 season.

Zeffirelli’s new production of Tosca debuted March 11, 1985, as his sixth Met Opera production and second Puccini opera at the opera house. In addition to directing, he designed the production’s sets. Tosca received 11 performances in the 1984-1985 season. The production’s 16th and final revival was staged in the 2006-2007 season.

Zeffirelli debuted his new production of La Traviata on Oct. 16, 1989, as his eighth Met Opera production and third Verdi opera at the Metropolitan Opera. In addition to directing, he designed the opera’s costumes and sets. La Traviata received 18 performances in the 1989-1990 season. The production’s fifth and final revival took place in the 1996-1997 season.

Zeffirelli debuted his new production of Don Giovanni on March 22, 1990, as his ninth Met Opera production and his only staging of an opera by Classical Era composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756-Dec. 5, 1791). In addition to directing, he designed the production’s sets. Don Giovanni received nine performances in the 1989-1990 season. The production’s seventh and final revival occurred in the 2002-2003 season.

Zeffirelli’s new production of Carmen debuted on Halloween, Oct. 31, 1996, as his 10th Met Opera production and as the only opera by French Romantic Era composer Georges Bizet (Oct. 25, 1838-June 3, 1875) in Zeffirelli’s Met Opera portfolio. In addition to directing, he designed the production’s sets. Carmen received 23 performances in the 1996-1997 season. Zeffirelli’s Carmen experienced seven revivals and retired at the end of the 2007-2008 season.

Zeffirelli revisited Verdi’s La Traviata for his 11th and last Met Opera production. One season, 1997-1998, separated the retirement of his first production and the debut of his production of La Traviata. Zeffirelli’s second staging of La Traviata debuted Nov. 23, 1998. For his second Traviatia, Zeffirelli designed the sets but not the costumes. La Traviata received 13 performances in the 1998-1999 season. Zeffirelli’s second La Traviata received 10 revivals. Retirement occurred after the 10th revival’s run in the 2009-2010 season.

The takeaways for the revival of only two of 11 Zeffirelli productions at Met Opera are that Zeffirelli’s La Bohème and Turandot remain in Met Opera’s active repertory, that three Zeffirelli productions were withdrawn in the 20th century and that nine Zeffirelli productions were retired in the first decade of the 21st century.
