Mature trees, more large-sized, extensive-rooted and established canopy-structured than young trees, bear greater air quality-improving, recreation and wildlife green-space, shade and stormwater-mitigation ecological and social benefits. Building or structural proximity, canopy-spread space, sunlight-exposure and wind-direction compromises above-ground and compacted, droughty, saturated soils, environmental toxins, nutrient and oxygen variability below-ground combat tree growth. Excavation resource-intensively, invasively, expensively, destructively discerns existing root locations that Ground penetrating radar (GPR) divulges noninvasively albeit difficultly without “accurate, objective, and automated” (Miron/Millward:202) mapping methods.

Density-based root-system simulation models elaborate root-growth spatial arrangements exclusively, non-morphologically even as architectural root-system simulation models elucidate morphologically, three-dimensionally root-growth direction, root-growth distribution, root-growth spatial arrangement.

The open-source root-architecture model RootBox’s Model Scoping figures canopy and tree-species biodiversity goals; root-system space; local-water, local-nutrient sources; planned above-ground, below-ground infrastructure; and unavoidable tree hazards.

Model Design and Parameterization versus Post-Modeling Assessment respectively get urban-design site assessment calibrated, parameterized, over-time biological-, physical-modulator encoded versus updated, operationalized for tree-management, urban-greening design modifications. RootBox software has 16 core growth parameters for every root type, of which the study had no shoot-borne types of the four primary root-architectural types (tap, basal, shoot-borne, lateral). Basal-zone and Tropism-type parameters respectively indicate root length nearest branching point disallowing successors growing and root growth 0-degree plagiotropically, downward gravitropically, away from main axis exotropically.

Tree root architecture for proactive urban green space design joins rapid-taper zone, root-system radial-distance (four hypothetical scenarios-assumed at 8-meter maximum root-system radius) and root-system shape characteristics.

Hypothetical scenario 1 base environmental affinity model (EAI) grid kindles the “soil condition without growth impedance” or “varying directional bias” (Miron/Millward:207) that larger urban parks know.

Hypothetical scenarios 2 and 3 respectively lodge EAI-logged physical-barrier nutrient or underground-leaking sewage-, water pipe-like water source and compacted soil-underlaid sidewalk 1 meter from tree base. Hypothetical scenario 2 thereby manifests RootBox as modelling compaction as hindering barrier making root growth “difficult” or as impassable barrier making root growth “stop entirely” (Miron/Millward:209). All hypothetical scenarios niched outward-, somewhat downward-growing tendencies the “first 1- to 2-m[eter] horizontal distance” (Miron/Millward:210) from tree bases before re-nudging upward, even to soil surfaces.

Tree root architecture for proactive urban green space design occasioned orienting scenario-2 root growth, within 0.75-meter distance from nutrient source, toward, under nutrient or water conduits.

Four scenario-1 iterations versus a fifth respectively present uniform tropism toward upper 0.5-meter soil evenly around tree bases and outer-grid edges omnidirectionally versus unidirection-skewed horizontal-distributed roots.

All four hypothetical scenarios’ zone of rapid taper (ZRT) quit at the 0.75-meter distance interval and their average-diameter change rate per centimeter quantified at 1.25-plus percent. All four scenarios in the hypothetical quartet revealed as the average diameters for their roots realized at tree bases 6 centimeters, according to Table 2 (Miron/Millward:213-214). RootBox supports no feature for creating tree anatomy’s root collar section even as the latter shows itself significant in ZRT and total root-spread final radius determinations.

Forecasting Tree Root Architecture as a Complement to Proactive Urban Green Space Design tries out RootBox for long-term tree cover through subterranean cityscape knowledge and care.

The Miron and Millward study analyzes tree-root architecture-forecasting through the open-source root architecture model RootBox rather than through traditional “resource-intensive, expensive, invasive, and destructive” excavation or through “noninvasive” Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) “challenged by the lack of accurate, objective, and automated methods of mapping tree root systems” (Miron/Millward:202). It applies RootBox forecasting to four hypothetical scenario simulations. Hypothetical Scenario 1 associates with “a soil condition without growth impedance or any varying directional bias, a growth condition that may exist in larger urban parks” (Miron/Millward:207).
